Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I replaced the useless CD holder with a useful cubby. Took all of 5 seconds to pull the old one and insert the new part. I also received my iPorsche kit today and am contemplating where to put my iPod. It will either go in the new cubby or in the center console compartment (wish I had a cool leather top with Carrera embossed on it ). I also learned something new about the doors on the 996 -- depending on what level of audio equipment you have installed, the door has a large resonator cavity inside to increase the base response from the drivers in the door. Unfortunately for me, I'm used to a subwoofer directly underneath my where it can work to best effect. The good news is that my indy does audio work and says that it's easy enough to put two 8" subs on the rear shelf. Mmmm, too bad for no bonus for a while (unless I get some of that guvernment $$$).

POST 2Original post

WTG on the mod ! I think pics are not required, but no one will complain! as for the stereo, COOL... I personally am happy with stock but understand that some want a little more. Hope there are pics when you get that done!! Ed

POST 3Original post

Aargghhh... still waiting for mine to get out of the shop... two more weeks, so they say... Not that I've been idle in the mod department - my console upper cubby came in last Friday (to replace the cd holder...), I ordered some new headlight bulbs (6k K and 8k K), can't wait to see which ones look better... I ordered the silvered bulbs after the amberectomy and ran them down to the shop to install them... shopping for the wheel spacers (will 15mm really go on the front axle with stock 18" setup?) and getting ready to order the non-smoking ashtray replacement (can't believe that thing costs more than the cubby...), Then shopping for the audio... looking at the Pioneer 90BT navi unit, but worrying the speakers (4" coax in the back... found a 5.25" woofer for the doors and 4" components for the dash...) Oh yeah... working the cost benefit analysis on the Valentine radar/laser detector (for the wife)... (I think this covers pages 3 and 4 of Tim's list...) Rudy

POST 4Original post

yea, I have 15mm in front and 7mm in the back... but since I am still running winter tires that are really small, I dont know what it really looks like. The weather is getting warmer and I might change to the summer tires next weekend. In the odd chance we have some cold (Seattle cold = 30 above zero) I should be OK to drive the truck one day till it passes. Nice to have things you want to do to your car... heck some cars never get that lucky... then again, some drivers never get this lucky either

I got it turned up pretty loud yesterday after my window was fixed. I think it's pretty good too, which is why I'm going to stop with the iPod mod for now. Still, doesn't stop you from dreaming -- like the time I went into a HiFi store to demo some $16k gear but ended up buying the $250 Denon from BestBuy. I've attached a snippet of my 996 wish list (note: doesn't include subwoofers) that I put together last week after visiting Custom Sounds. audio_wish_list.jpg Pics to follow on the iPod install (hopefully tonight).

POST 7Original post

wow, that's going to sound amazing!! dreaming is what keeps us going !

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm pretty sure that my car was built without the premium Bose package, so I'm dealing with the base level audio (no Bose grills, no amp up front, no subs). Isn't there a dealer tool that you can plug your VIN into and see what options the car came from the factory with?

POST 10Original post

compaired to yours mine will sound like this... which even sort of looks like me!

POST 11Original post

I upgraded my car with the better sound system from the factory when I first ordered it - I checked the boxes for Motor Sound Package and Sport Muffler. Of course no point in spending money on a stereo system after that. Who could hear it? LOL! The cubby is far more useful and the silly CD holder thing. The cubby was immmediately in there when I took delivery. The ashtray replacement thing is an idea I have liked. But I also like the idea of having the little door over whatever is in there. So I got a small piece of black Alcantara and cut it and glued it into the ashtray. No noise, and still has a cover. It also matches the 3-spoke Alcantara steering wheel and shifter boot I installed last summer.

POST 12Original post

You should have a white sticker under your hood with all your option codes. Post them and we can decode. The BOSE would have a subwoofer on the rear deck as well as BOSE on the front door speakers.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 6317673

Consider yourself lucky. It's easier to upgrade if you DON'T have the stupid fiberoptic crap.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 6318125

True! but even the BOSE in 02 did not have the MOST system, that was 03+

POST 15Original post

damn... now you have to put on an exhaust bypass to compete with the new setup.... GL on the install... looking forward to the DIY!

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 6317673

Is there a white sticker on the inside of your hood that shows the options? My 04 has it there and in the warranty manual...but you're right, a dealer should be able to tell you. Maybe even PCNA if you get the right person on the phone.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here is what the Porsche Option Decoder had to say: Code Option Description 139 Seat Heating - Left 340 Seat heating - Right 424 Automatic heating control 432 Sports steering wheel, leather 363mm (4 spokes) 432 Lateral stripes, Martini [1978-1982] 586 Lumbar support (driver's seat) 939 Soft leather rear 982 Supple Leather Seats/Trim C02 Equipped with catalytic converter X97 Aluminium/leather shift **** X98 Aluminium/leather parking break handle No BOSE. The car also as a three spoke wheel instead of a four spoke, so that must have gotten swapped at some point. Here is the rest of the sticker: IMG_0001.jpg

POST 18Original post

I thought the 4 spoke was gone for the 02+ years.

POST 19Original post

That stereo sounds like it's going to be awesome.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'd have to check my buyer's guide and essential companion on that. Perhaps its a mistake in the option lookup? Just under the VIN, it says 996 430. Is that the indicator for 4S?

POST 21Original post

I also found this: 432 Protective laquer finish black

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I did a little searching here and on renntech but couldn't find a thread detailing how to remove the center console. Anyone with links? I think I may try the cubby installation first and move to the rear console box later.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 6320017

The instrections for the B&M shifter shows how to remove the console, very easy! LINK

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the link! I think I have to delay the project for lack of supplies this evening.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 6320376

I think I just talk a lot. She's actually out for the evening. It's my kids who are waiting for me to put them to bed instead of chatting on the forums.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Center console is off. iPorsche adapter installed but not fully working yet (not charging my iPod like it should). Question on wire routing -- what would be the best way to get the wire routed to the rear console box? It looks like the "stock" wires are routed under the shifter assembly. Is it possible to route the wire above without interfering with the shifter cables, etc.?

POST 28Original post

Just loosen the 4 bolts that hold down the shift tower (black plastic housing) and completely remove two of them on the same side and lift the shift tower up 1/4" and tuck the wires under the tower. Re-tighten the bolts and you are good to go.

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm completed the install and am very happy with the results. I followed the iPorsche instructions for the actual install of the connections for the iPod ( LINK ) but decided to locate the ipod in the box in the rear console instead of in the cubby. 1) Here is the car with the center and rear consoles removed: IMG_0018_sm.jpg 2) I routed the iPod cable under the shifter assembly (which I temporarily moved to help accomplish this) as shown in this picture (far right). I used mini zip ties to secure the cable as shown here (center and left -- soon after the pic was taken): IMG_0021_sm.jpg 3) Using a hack saw and a file, I cut into the bottom of the rear console box sides and floor for the wire: IMG_0022_sm.jpg IMG_0023_sm.jpg 4) This picture shows the console reinstalled prior to adding in the rubber mat IMG_0024_sm.jpg 5) iPod installed! IMG_0025_sm.jpg Hope others will find this useful.

I finally got to listen to the iPod on the way to work this morning. What an improvement over the radio tuner! (I haven't tried the CD player). I have my entire CD collection ripped loss-less, and it sounds great. I did have to turn the volume down a bit because the doors were rattling from the all the bass. Seems like my existing system got a new lease on life.
