Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

yeah replace the belt (I would buy from the dealer rather than autozone, you want consistency to troubleshoot) and check out the rollers for smoothness an noise.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone,
After a heavy down pour or after I wash my car, my engine area has developed a screeching noise. After I put the car in gear and step on the gas, the sound will go away. Any ideas what this is? Is it the Polyrib belt slipping?
I have a 1999 996 C4. No warning lights of an kind.
Overall, it does not effect the car, but it is embarrassing as the noise is really noticeable.
Any help would be great.
Thanks.
chances are the polybelt and or idle pully bearing are to blame. Both are about as simple to change as filling up the car with gas, but you should know they are bad before doing it.
try and isolate the noise... is it coming from near the rear tires or near the license plate? Open the engine when it making it and see if you can pinpoint where it "seems" to be coming from. Post results.
Other options are the AOS can cause screech, the throwout bearing, IMS, alternator, power steering, water pump....blah blah.. I have been chasing one for about 2 months that after i changed tranny fluids went away???
best bet though is like I said in the first line... get back with your findings
redridge.... you scared me on that one....

I am thinking about going to autozone and picking up a polyrib belt and swapping it out...
its hard to pinpoint the noise as it only comes out when I put the car in gear, then it goes away after I step on the gas... i will post my findings... thanks!
tranny fluid debates are a tricky subject but FWIW - SWEPCO 210 - seems to have saved mine?
IF it goes away with the clutch depressed, could be the tranny making the noise. That is another super simple job, in fact my 10 year old son did (well mostly did) mine.
if it had something to do with the rain.... it shouldnt be permanent (Like 1-2 minutes and its should stop when dry). If it still make a noise... yeah replace the belt (I would buy from the dealer rather than autozone, you want consistency to troubleshoot) and check out the rollers for smoothness an noise.
does the idle change when you do that (put it in drive)... its seems to point at rollers, belt... even, water pump might be going as well. Doesnt sound major though...
belt slip from the water. i had my car in for detail the other day and that happened. i almost #2'd myself when they started it. went away after a minute.
from what i have been told, new or old, it will squeek given enough water. it has only happened to my car once, and never happened again. it was when i took it to my detailer for the first time. they do all the high end cars for the local porsche/bmw/maserati dealer. i saw them using
a lot
of water. i asked them wtf after a little p came out. they said it usually happens with 911's new and old if started immediately after a wash with lots of water. i would find out from a mechanic if it needs it before you waste time and money...
