I will pass as I suspect the everyone is right, there will be deals out there.
Leading evidence: 'everyone is right, there will be deals out there' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'everyone is right, there will be deals out there' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace engine' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

$11k would be high IMO if I had to replace the motor and ?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am looking for a track car and have located a potential candidate...BUT the current owner says that there is oil in the coolant and that it will eventually need a rebuild / replacement. So... what are we talking about here? A complete rebuild, partial rebuild, and what kind of dollars are we talking about if I do the R&R and just have the key components shipped out for the rebuild process. I can probably gather more info on the condition of the car... but wanted to get an idea of potentially what I am getting myself into....
Thanks in advance!
My "guess," having read other similar situations, is you are looking somethere between $7,500 and $11,000, depending wha the damage is and how much, if any, of the labor you can do yourself.
Yup - you're looking at a new engine, or a lot of re-build time. Not inexpensive and not trivial.
There are lots of good cars out there, so move on from this one. Finding a well priced car in good condition isn't tough right now.
Good luck!
$11k would be high IMO if I had to replace the motor and ? the rest of the car
just imagine its a 928 4S with the tranny - rear diff and suspenssion shot plus who knows what with the motor (thats about par right?)
the good news is you get a fresh motor and can drive the pants off it for 10-15 years w/o much to worrie about (unlike some of us with "Le Bomb" still cruising at 108+k miles and mid $20's in it)
though I didnt drive for a week and had it out today... OOOO LAA LAAA she ISSS SWEET To Drive !!
Then based on what the car's value is based on current market conditions in your area subtract that quote amount plus something extra for your troubles and make seller an offer.
Err on your side. No way seller should get anywhere near market for the car.
If seller won't come down walk away. There's always another car.
I'd not attempt to rebuild motor. Oil in coolant can be just a head gasket leak but it can also mean serious block/head issues and some/all of these may not be reusable. Then you're looking at replacing engine.
Buying car for rebuild too big a gamble. Engines exhibiting oil/coolant mixing, signs of overheating, bearing damage, etc., are best avoided. Rebuild candidates want to be just worn out, but still basically sound engines.
While you might luck out and find engine needs actually little work given the symptoms you have to assume the worst case.
Sincerely,
Macster.
+1
Think of it this way... the economic data I've seen show that GDP isn't going to hit bottom until Q1 or Q2 of next year. On top of that there are 2 more waves of bad loans to hit. We still have a very wild ride coming through 2011 - plenty of time for some great car deals.
Thanks everyone for the input!!!!! I will pass as I suspect the everyone is right, there will be deals out there. Patience and timing is the best course at this point!
Sorry, what did I miss... I ran out and bought some more guns and ammo !
NO ONE is getting my GT2 parts w/o a fight!
yea yea, food and stuff too......protect the family.. yadda yadda
Hey, you know me, just saying it as it is.
I'm amused that the media hasn't caught onto this yet. The loan stuff I've only seen reported in one place (briefly). My father-in-law is in the mortgage industry and even he was talking the lack of coverage yesterday.
As for the GDP projections - who knows if they'll come true, but the models that we're using at my company are working out well so far. They put the end of this mess -at least- 18 months out from here. The government models are roughly in agreement with our models, but I'd say they're a little more optimistic... not sure that means much considering that they didn't see this coming and our corporate models did.
The bottom line is that people should be prepared for a long wild ride... this is not going to be over by the summer, or the end of the year.
...having said that I'm not sure I'd be splashing out on a car.
i think that's because, in way, the other waves don't matter. CDOs and MBSes are worthless now. doesn't matter if the CDO is made up of 1 year, 3 year, 5 year, 7 year or whatever ARMs. when the banks are looking at their liabilities, their ENTIRE portfolio of CDOs and MBSes are considered worthless.
