Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If I unscrew the oil filter housing, will all the oil flow out? Do I have to drain and then change the filter and refill with the drained oil? Or can I just pull the filter housing, change the filter, and top off the oil level? Thanks, Andy

POST 2Original post

No problem. If you take the filter off, you will only lose about 3/4 of a quart. put the new one on, add 3/4 of a quart, check the level and you should be good to go.

POST 3Original post

No,--it's not going to drain the entire crankcase, just a bit in the cannister, etc. I would allow it to fall into a bucket and then measure what came out (.LT. 1/2 quart) and then top it back up after securing the new filter.

POST 5Original post

Just for curiosity's sake, why are you changing just the filter?

POST 6Original post

forgot to change it after topping it with fresh oil....

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've been changing my oil and filter out every 5K miles. I would like to move to a regimen of changing the filter and keep the oil longer if the oil checks out to be OK from an oil analysis lab. Considering the factory recommendation is 15K with the same oil and filter, I'm still erring on the side of caution.

There is an aftermarket product that will allow you to put a screw type filter on, and you can use a magnet on it. It's from Flat6innovations. here's a link: http://www.flat6innovations.com/shop...cat=377&page=1 Here's the installation video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bv8BTItCrF0
