This turned out to be nearly all the rattling in front:

I wonder if you can take a Dremel to a PSE or spoiler switch and change the graphic and have it illuminate.

how about 2 targa switches in the center console (horseshoe) use the lower for 1 door and then the upper for the other 2 doors.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've seen some posts with these rattles...has anyone located them?
1. Right front of passenger compartment. Sounds kind of like detonation in an American V8 but a little more treble. (it isn't detonation though)
2. Behind driver's left ear somewhere. Sounds like two spoons chattering together.
Sounds won't reproduce at the dealer, although they put some little pads on the door compartment lids to solve that one.
Thanks
Oh, sorry
I'm from france, I'm the happy owner of a 2000 996 C2 for a few weeks and I'll post pics as soon as I know how to proceed !
Thanks for the advise

Lee if the front sound is coming from inside the car it may be eminating around the defroster guard closest to the inside of the front windscreen or the directional vent assembly passenger side next to the A pillar. If its from the engine compartment then that is another issue.
The noise behind your left ear is probably in one of two places. The driver's side wing (window---sail window) or the upholstered panel directly below the the rear windscreen. Call me and we can fix. Its pretty easy.
I had intermittent rattling sounds that eminated near my left ear.
Turned out to be loose/damaged roof panel clips(male and female) in two locations.
1- above B pillar
2- above and below rear window
It was a quick fix , but took the dealer a little while to locate the cause.
Lee:
I had the same problem with the rattles from the driver's side. I too thought they were from behind me, but upon real concentration they were coming from the dash. At the dealer the mechanic hit the dash pod with his fist and knew exactly where it was coming from. 1/2 hour later, he tightened some bracket, and it was solved. The car has now been transformed without that rattle.
Hope that helps.
Fred
Jim,
I'm glad you are amused. It's YOUR FAULT you know...You told me about the ashtray mod,,,next thing ya know I'm putting my garage remote in there....
the 2 spoons behind the ear I believe comes from behind the sunroof in the headliner... there is a spine that spans the width of the car that when pressed up makes the sound go away... when it is free it starts that chatter... dealer looked at it twice and still happening... any ideas?
Lee...the garage door mod is cool. Try it. If your not doing anything on Saturday, come on over, lets take your dashboard out for fun and felt tape everything!
Jim,
This Sat isn't good, but in theory we should do that. I want to drive around for a few days and make sure I really found it.
My issue for the garage door mod is that I have 3 doors and need all three buttons. Any thoughts on that?
how about 2 targa switches in the center console (horseshoe) use the lower for 1 door and then the upper for the other 2 doors. ouy can use your old garage door opener and hide it in the cavity behind the horseshoe, put in one of these sponges from Griots garage and no rattles

some sodering required
Need to be able to control all 3 doors separately. I do have 3 blanks on the horseshoe (that's the part around the radio, right?). I suppose I could move the spoiler switch to the right next to the lock and defrost. I wonder if you can take a Dremel to a PSE or spoiler switch and change the graphic and have it illuminate. That would mean that the switch is black plastic overlaid on translucent. Any idea?
I have one of the multiple buttons as well for a three car garage. What I ended up doing is taking the old remote that operated just the one door where I park BamBam and did the mod from there.
From your picture it looks like you have a Lift Master switch which is the same that I have. You can buy a single unit remote that you set to read the receiver on the P/bay only and use that one for Paulina.
I got my remote from Crawford Garage Doors over in Tualitin: [phone removed]. You could probably get one at Sears at Washington Square as well then do the install.
One other thing, if you do it, cover the board with a cloth tape to keep it from shorting and mount the board with a piece of Velcro inside the console frame so it doesn't slide around to make any RATTLES! You will also need to optimize the sending and receiving distance because the remote board will be a little more shielded in the console frame.
No Lee...don't do three. That would look trashy IMHO. Save at least one or two slots for the microwave and cooler.
Just do Paulina's door, again, IMHO.
I have found the final front right rattle. It is still the door. Apparently the dealer did not take ALL my complaint down. They fixed the rattle on the door to the compartment, but not the one inside the RH door. You can press the scalloped part of the door and the noise goes away...off to call them...
Yee-Hah!
No rattles (as of today at least). It was two notorious TSB items...the right door and the left rear window.
While I was there, they said there's a recall and I'll be getting a new air filter box as soon as one comes in...
Anyone read the owner's manual? About the "rattles" not being covered? My GT3 sounds like Tina Turner's tambourine :-) With the cage, harnesses, stiff bars, etc, it rocks and rolls! :-)
LOL! Thats exactly how it works...!
A friend of mine had two attorneys working on one rezoning project down in the Bay Area.
The two attorney's kept calling each other who were never in their respective offices or available via their cell phones to receive each other's calls.
Friend got a bill for something like $200.00 for phone calls from one to the other and the same from the other guy. Like it was $400.00 total. He challenged that portion of the bill and found out that each time they picked up the phone whether a call was connected or not it was billed out at 1/10 of an hour.
