Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all, I'm hoping the experienced folks here can weigh in on whether my engine mounts might be worn and in need of replacement there's no record of this ever being done.
Background: this is a 1998 C2 coupe (manual) with 146,000km. My PPI flagged the following (verbatim):
"At around 35mph noise from tranny is coming. At 65mph and more it gets louder. Creaking from suspension when going over bumps or steering. Sounds like one of the ball joints. Clunking when decelerating and accelerating during higher speeds."
Of these, I've personally noticed the clunking under deceleration, which makes me wonder about the engine mounts. I haven't noticed the transmission noise, though this is the only 996 I've driven so I may not have a baseline. Photos from the rear of the car are attached happy to provide more if helpful.
Yes I would replace the engine mounts, looks like a decent amount of sag based on the muffler tips. It won't fix all of those issues as it also sounds like suspension parts are also worn down. But new motor motors should tighten up the shifting and driving feel. They're not too hard to access and remove so you can examine them and reinstall if they're still good (which i doubt).
At that mileage there is a pretty good chance you will not only need engine mounts, but also a trans mount as well as shock mounts. The rest of the suspension may also need a refresh. Maybe, just maybe the previous owner refreshed the parts recently.
This is a list of confirmed work that has been completed at 120,000km

Im with GC996. Change all 3. Mine felt like the engine was jumping around when I got on it.
And I agree with all the suspension rubber. Its all old sagging and maybe cracked. My rears were bad enough that the camber couldnt be adjusted to simple street specs.
Good luck! These are great cars to sort out and drive. Im 8 years in and still smile walking up to mine.
Yep. New engine mounts and new transmission Mount bushings. It's amazing how so much work is done on these and yet those parts never seem to get replaced. Consider the age of your car, irrespective of the mileage.
I am still driving the vehicle and feeling it out for any potential issues. I have watched the FCP Euro video regarding changing the motor mounts and it does not look too difficult, even without a lift.
I have realized that the passenger interior door handle does not open the door, I am a gentleman driver to all my passengers currently.
The air conditioning also does not work and with the temperatures currently that has made for hot driving conditions.
My snag list is ever growing it seems.
Today I found out there's actually an official spec for this measurement. It should be 25-26mm -'01 and 22mm from '02-
Hopefully this helps someone quantify whether they are out of spec.
