Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Run sweet' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check fuses and relays' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was in the parking lot of a restaurant in my Boxster today and started the car up, and about 10 seconds later it seized up (felt almost like a stall) and it can not be restarted. When I try to start it, it won't turn over (battery is new). In addition, there is a horrible burning smell from the right side engine vent hole. The oil level (according to the dash guage) is perfect.
Anyone had a similar incident? Thoughts?
I am calling around to get it towed as we speak.
Wow...sorry to hear about the trouble... Give me a bit more info, miles, etc...it's somewhat common for '99 Boxster's to just die in similar fashion...let's hope that's not the case with yours as the only a fix is a new engine...
74k miles. I am the one and only owner, and it ran sweet. never ANY mechanical issues. had new clutch, brakes and more. even just put in new sport seats. it kinda just died.
Sounds like one serious short. And...if I am not mistaken, that could be the main wiring route for the primary engine harness. If it is electrical, DO NOT try and start it again. If it is a short, you might have a crispy Boxster on your hands.

I know we spoke via telio-phone, but I'll post my suggestions for the group. Two causes. Engine /vehicle electrical harness (big $$). Orrr...sounds like it could simply be the starter. Pray it's the starter. I would expect $500-600 repair. Hopefully that includes parts. Not that bad of a fix if it's the starter. Keep us posted.
Good luck.

Looks like a job for the electircal shop to handle.....
I don't think this would be a good DIY project unless you're pretty "savvvvv" with the electroincs on this ride.....
Have you posted this question in the Boxster section? You may run into others who have had the same problem....

Another possibility is that the cylinder liner slipped. Your mileage sounds about right for that sort of a problem. I am no expert, but it does NOT sound like a starter problem. The car died. A starter problem wouldn't usually cause a car to die. It could be some sort of an electrical problem, but I am not sure I understand the symptoms fully. When you say it won't turn over, what do you mean? You turn the key and nothing (i.e., the engine does not even turn over)? Are there any clicking noises? Are there any lights on the dash? Do other electrical items function? Have you checked your fuses and relays? Have you determined whether you have a spark? So many things it could be, but so hard to diagnose without more info.
If you were at low speed, it is possible that the cylinder liner slipped, but I would have expected you to describe more noise when it stalled and possibly white smoke . . .
I don't think it's electrical. The shop is into it, and can't find the issue yet. They now need more $ to tear the engine open. maybe camshaft? bad news keeps getting worse.
This might also be a cylinder liner failure. They fail by moving out of place. When this happens the piston can push up and past the top of the liner and the rings pop open. They hook the top of the liner and the motor just stops dead. This is a catastrophic failure that normally results in a replacement motor.
EDIT Sorry did not mean to pile on. just read the same thing already posted by TD in DC.
Not necessarily . . . Porsche has been known to perform "good will" repairs for this failure because it is a known flaw on this year of Boxster, even for cars that are long out of warranty. Be very, very nice to your service advisor . . . If you haven't been being nice already, it may be too late . . .
