I run Rexing 4K cameras in all four of our cars because they still work after years of abusive Florida heat.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

It was pretty straightforward to run the wire for it under the dash and then tuck it into the window trim and then pop out by the mirror so its all nearly invisible from the drivers seat.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The other car ran the yield on me while I was in roundabout yesterday. My observation the driver never bothered to look to yield and therefore was unlikely to do so. Cat like reflexes (lol) and superb brakes saved the day. I gave the driver a hearty dose of horn, which I rarely do. Ive been debating a dashcam but havent decided which one fits my minimalist goal. I want it to fit entirely in front of the rear view mirror.
I've been thoroughly impressed with Viofo's dashcams. I have them in my 996TT and 928GT; the number of distracted drivers in gigantic SUVs designed to insulate them from their own incompetence that would obliterate my cars in a collision makes it a no-brainer.
Standard mount, it's a 3M sticky pad cut to the size of the dashcam's base and they include spares for if you change car or have your windscreen replaced. The rear view camera is mounted to the rear windscreen the same way and is very small so it doesn't obstruct your vision. Both cars have had lengthy trips through Europe in very warm weather and the supplied sticky pad mounts haven't shown any sign of letting go!
I had Dashcam by Galphi hot wired into my 2002, 996C4 Cab. No rear camera just one for inside the cockpit that does that when the top is down. The camera won't record someone vandalizing or trying to break into the car unless it's wired. I have to remember to unplug it when parked at home in the garage - if not driven for a week or longer it kills the battery. I had the Porsche dealer do this so the wire was hidden well.
I run Rexing 4K cameras in all four of our cars because they still work after years of abusive Florida heat. They're small enough to hide behind the rearview mirror and I power them with an OBD2 port plug so they can run all the time.
I have this one. It's not entirely behind the rear view mirror although I probably could put it there. It's just to the right of it on the passenger side. so small that I don't notice it. I've really liked it in the year or so I've had it.

Its a shame that nobody sells a plug to tap into the alien head. I've been procrastinating my install because I don't want to bother running wires down to the center console and I despise vampire taps
I am thinking of getting Viofo and putting waterproof rear camera by the rear plate as it is convertible. I think I could use dome light for power for the dash camera.
I'll do DIY video when I get to it, but it will not be anytime soon. I've done it on Subaru Outback and it was pretty easy. I'll make YouTube video of it later on and post it (have to buy camera first lol)
In the porsche I run a redtiger, look on Amazon.
I've been running dash cams on my bikes and cars since my first stint in Korea. Well worth having.
996 setup is a fuse cable in the fuse box with their hardwired kit.
For what it is worth, I have the Viofo 229 Pro in my Cayenne and my wife's Subaru, both using front and rear cameras. They work great and the video is outstanding. Thinking of a either a Viofo or a Wolfbox 900 for my 996TT. The only issue that makes me wonder about the Wolfbox is it is a mirror overlay and I am wondering how much it intrudes into the interior (how much it sticks out in the cabin). Someone on here made a 3D mount for it and I would really love to get the file, or a completed mount (I'd pay for it).
Why the vitriol directed to fuse taps? Is there a hidden fatal flaw to these vampire taps? Ive been using one for my radar detector and one for my track cam with no undesired consequences over a several year period. I ran the wires around the windshield and down the A-pillar.
I have a couple of inexpensive compact Kenwood dash cams, they were maybe $100 or 150 at Best Buy. Only shoots in 1080 which is good enough. It was pretty straightforward to run the wire for it under the dash and then tuck it into the window trim and then pop out by the mirror so its all nearly invisible from the drivers seat. What is visible is I have a cig lighter multi outlet thing with a push on/off switch that sits below in the center console cubby. That allows me to have dash cam and radar detector both plugged in and since the cig lighter is always hot I can just hit the switch rather than have to unplug.
I had zero experience with dashcams so I ended up with a Viofo A119 based on the reviews of that annoying Project Farm guy on YouTube.
I decided to use the X5 as a test bed before buying another one for the 996. I honestly haven't played around with it much but it seems like it does what it is supposed to do well.
This is one of those things where in most cases it probably won't matter, but given that you are piercing the insulation to make the contact, you run into a host of potential issues (piercing the actual wire thereby increasing resistance in the circuit, allowing moisture into the wire, potentially coming loose w vibration, etc) that just aren't there with a proper splice or pass-through plug.
Mostly I'm just giving myself excuses to not do work you see..
Question for the dash cam brain trust here: is there any concern that using a dash cam could be used against you in the event that you are doing something spirited, and the worst case happens? I dont mean driving aggressively and cutting people off. Im talking about when one is maneuvering through traffic to make progress, with reasonable gaps
Do you change your driving at all because of your dash cam?
Im not sure the people who drive like a-holes are the kind of people who would have such self reflection. The dash cam makes me feel slightly better that there will be some documentation should there be an incident. There are lots of idiots and scammers out there.
Fortunately the last car accident I was in was so blatantly the other persons fault that there was no question when the cops showed up. They pulled out directly in front of me and were going the wrong way and we had a head on. They had no insurance, went away in an ambulance and I have no doubt that they would have tried to sue if the cops didnt write it up that they were entirely at fault. But what if it hadnt been so clear cut for the cops to see?
I'd be more worried that somebody else with a dashcam would snitch on me tbh. In the UK some police forces run a scheme called Operation Snap where dashcam owners can submit footage of other road users being ******** and the police can prosecute based on that evidence. Hell, there's even an entire genre of YouTube channels compiling crap driving caught on dashcam.
I bought a cheap one from Temu. It has 4 cameras. Front, sides and backup with a tampering circuit in the event some jerk wants to key the car or runs into it in the parking lot, then parks elsewhere. Fantastic for peace of mind. As you mentioned, just remember to unplug it after you get home.
Thanks for the responses.
A friend was at the end of a merge ramp, still in the merging lane when someone in the driving lane made a sudden right turn and slammed into the side of their car. My friend was unable to move his car due to front axle damage, so the work truck that slammed into him pulled forward to get out of traffic. The driver-at-fault got out and apologized (before the police arrived).
Once it landed with insurance, the driver-at-fault apparently changed their story and made it sound like my friend merged into his truck. My friend wasnt thinking quickly enough to take pics before the truck moved to the side of the road (big mistake).
Fortunately it sounds like there were enough witnesses and possibly cameras that my friends company (he was on business) will be able to successfully fight the issue. But Ive had enough dealings with insurance companies (including auto and health) to understand they dont want to pay and will resort to any method available to achieve the best outcome for them (not for their client).
This is the main reason Id want a dash cam: to protect myself. And since I dont drive like an idiot, Im not really worried about my camera recording something that could be used against me. I had not thought about other people using their dashcam to report dangerous drivers. It makes perfect sense and is yet another reason to drive respectfully.
One thing about the world we live in today: one must assume they are ALWAYS being recorded when in public.
One more thing it seems like driving any kind of true sports car brings out the worst in a lot of other drivers. People trying to race, cutting in and out or all kinds of other things with zero awareness or concern for their surroundings. And Im not saying its ok if nobody else is around but its really concerning when the radar detector is going off or if there are cops around. The dash cam at least gives me some evidence that I wasnt engaged in any kind of street race or other shenanigans when these people are driving like idiots.
