Couldn�t take the anxiety any longer and took my 03 c2 with 66k in for the LN retrofit last week. I have the old bearing and while it appears to be in decent shape when I opened it up there was zero grease inside and just a small amount of brown burnt oil. I just changed my oil 2 weeks ago so the oil in the engine was fresh, the oil in the bearing was not. How long can a bearing go with little to no lubricant? Anyway after seeing that I feel the money spent was justified.

Totally money well spent!! Bearings cannot go long with out lube. You probably didn't have long before a grenade!!

My road bike has sealed bearings in the bottom bracket. I noticed a faint clicking sound during a recent ride so pulled the bearings out and popped the seals. The bearings were loaded with a creamy pink grease. The clicking sound? That was the grease being pumped though the races and making a snapping sound like someone chewing gum with their mouth open! In racing karts some run sealed axle bearings, some run open race bearings. The open bearings run pretty dry and don't last too long--an hour or two. Of course they only run ~1000-2000 RPM. I'm not sure what RPM the IMS shaft turns--full or half speed versus crankshaft?
