Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
We had a short small bs session and he said it was the original M96.
Leading evidence: 'original m96' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'original m96' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace aos soon (which is also original)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The IMS was replaced for the LN Engineering version, as was the RMS, when I had the original 110,000 mile clutch replaced.

Oh and I've replaced the starter which was beginning to get slower but I've had to do that on two of my previous 996s also.

I do think I'll be replacing the AOS soon (which is also original).

Suggestion
Oil changes are done every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, I drive the car with mechanical sympathy (although I do run it to at or near redline probably at least once or twice a day), I'm careful with the interior so that nothing in there has broken yet, and the leather is still in pretty good shape.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Here is a guy with 171K miles on his '99 .... didn't ask how much work he has done on this and if it is original engine ... but gives me hope I still have a lot more miles left in mine !

I pulled up at the ATM the other day and parked next to a 996 that looked just like mine. Same color. No mods. He had 151,000 on the odometer. We had a short small bs session and he said it was the original M96. I was happy to hear that. I have 76k.
Anyway, if you are really interested in seperating myth from reality on this much-maligned engine...read "The Truth" by Peter Morgan in the June 2011 issue of GTPorsche. It is the results of a comprehensive investigation on the
996. No spoiler here but only 5% of the engines failed. Production was 145,000.
Not bad.
Like I have said before..." forums are like hospitals"... for the most part, only those with boo-boo's show up.
126,500 miles and increasing rapidly for this VERY happy owner (me
). This car has been mine for the past five years and 90,000 miles and has had no major issues. The IMS was replaced for the LN Engineering version, as was the RMS, when I had the original 110,000 mile clutch replaced. Normal wear items have been replaced as needed. I'm hoping and planning to drive this car for at least another happy five years.
162k miles here, 2002 Carrera, 6 speed. Daily driver, original everything other than meticulous maintenance, clutch/brakes/tires, fluids, water pump/rollers/belt etc. I do think I'll be replacing the AOS soon (which is also original). Oh and I've replaced the starter which was beginning to get slower but I've had to do that on two of my previous 996s also.
I do. Of course, I do expect things to occasionally fail, but that's what long term car ownership is all about. I take care of my car - so that it WILL last a long time. Oil changes are done every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, I drive the car with mechanical sympathy (although I do run it to at or near redline probably at least once or twice a day), I'm careful with the interior so that nothing in there has broken yet, and the leather is still in pretty good shape. The car stays relatively clean and is waxed occasionally.
Five more years for me equates to another 80,000 to 90,000 miles. That should bring the car up to 205,000 to 215,000 miles. Considering how many nice 250 to 350,000 mile old school 911's are out there, I think it's certainly possible to bring my 996 to 200,000+ miles.
