Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

After about 2006 the OEM IMS bearing was made larger than the opening in the engine cases and can only be replaced/upgraded by tearing down the engine.

5w40 is also now Porsche's recommended oil (I think Pedro's garage has the latest approved list as well as renntech.org if you are a contributing member there which is highly recommended).
Leading evidence: 'Replace /upgraded by tearing down the engine' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend )' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

In addition, guidance from LN engineering is that this "service" item is to be replaced every so often (even the LN bearing).

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am very close to buying a '99 with a new factory motor. I am not sure if this was a warranty or purchased motor. The seller says the motor has all the M96 improvements done by the factory through the end of production. He says that includes the 997 RMS and the last M96 IMS.
I will see the documentation tomorrow, bu let's assume he is correct. Should I take comfort with the latest factory M96 IMS, or should I plan for a LN IMS upgrade as soon as practical?
If the motor has the latest IMS then the LNE upgrade is not a viable option. After about 2006 the OEM IMS bearing was made larger than the opening in the engine cases and can only be replaced/upgraded by tearing down the engine.
That being said I think that a engine with the latest upgrades is a valuable upgrade over the old engine.
The IMSB they use in those engines has similar strength to the original dual row. But not as strong as the LN retrofit. In addition, guidance from LN engineering is that this "service" item is to be replaced every so often (even the LN bearing). So would you rather have an engine you can replace the bearing every 50k without total dis-assembly?
But I wouldn't let the above stray you away from your potential purchase... IMSBF affects a small fraction of engines... and I agree with Doug - after reading tons and tons of TSBs there are a lot of updated parts, hardware, etc, that are better than what was there originally.
With any used engine. I for one would like to see leak down results (even if cold) prior to purchase. If the engine is installed somewhere now have it compression tested as well as leak down tested.
Try to get a guarantee or warranty if possible.
Thanks for the info guys. It is very much appreciated. I am a long time air-cooled owner and a lot of the issues are similar, but again entirely different.
I basically took the day off today doing research on the M96 and let's just say that I have information overload!
From one of the vendor sites, they say that an accelerated maintenance schedule can help minimize problems, especially changing the oil. And with air-cooled car, picking the right oil can almost be a religious experience. But I'll ask this anyway.
Is there a preferred oil for M96 motors? I got the impression from one source that Royal Purple may have the best characteristics to protect the IMS. Is that proving out in the real world?
Thanks again for any and all comments.
YAY! Oil thread.
There are a ton of people still running Mobil 1 0w40.
However, 5w40 is recommended by companies such as LN engineering (google "ln engineering oil" for a good read).
5w40 is also now Porsche's recommended oil (I think Pedro's garage has the latest approved list as well as renntech.org if you are a contributing member there which is highly recommended).
Some on this thread even recommend 10w40, 5w50, or 15w50.
Some swear by M1, and others Castrol or other brands.
If your engine is rebuilt by Flat 6 innovations they require use of their own oil developed with people that know more about oil than you or I would ever care to.
Of course, this is as much a religious debate as just about any other of these types of topics.
