Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

And its a relative easy job to check fluid level/leaks.
Leading evidence: 'Check fluid level/leaks' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check fluid level/leaks' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

So, do not start out by anything other than checking hydraulic fluid in pump reservoir.

You can also check the rams for wetness/residue showing leaks.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The roof is currently open and the rear windows are down, when I press to close the roof, the clam shell opens, but nothing else happens. After the clam shell opens, I hear a soft click somewhere under the roof cover and then the rear windows click once as well. Any ideas on the likely culprit would be much appreciated. It is a 2003 996 Carrera 2.
This is the best thread I can point you to.

The clamshell is electrically operated. There is a motor behind the rear seats that opens and closes it. Along the way, there are a handful of microswitches. Not computer related, simple electrical switches. Meaning, that the ENTIRE convertable top system can be figured out if you're mechanically minded enough.
Once all of the switches open in sequence, then the hydraulic motor for the top can kick in and open/close the convertable top.
My guess is that one of the microswitches is misaligned or faulty somehow. You do not need a porsche tech to do any service on this. Just a strong mechanical mind to understand where the switches are and how they sequence.

Your above post seems to say your clamshell and its related components opens and closes fine. So, do not start out by anything other than checking hydraulic fluid in pump reservoir.
A leak in cab top's hydraulic rams is
THE
major cause of most 996 cab tops not functioning correctly. And its a relative easy job to check fluid level/leaks. More than likely if your 25 year old rams have not been rebuilt yet they will need it done.
Out of fluid rams can look like all kinds of other problems to techs not familiar with the 996 cab. Do yourself a favor, Check the hydraulic fluid first and try not to get caught up in all the internet hype about other areas of the cab top. Most/many of those other cab problems are caused unintentionally by good meaning techs that just don't know....
Fill the fluid, try the top again see what happens. Fluid leaks usually appear in front of the rear wheels, there is not a lot so its hard to see many times... You can also check the rams for wetness/residue showing leaks. But if fluid is low, 99% the 25 year old ram seals are shot.
Do not ever do the manual top procedure in the manual unless its an absolute emergency and you're by yourself. That can open up a whole bag of worms and cause a lot more work that needs a piwis.
Instead, if roof close/open is needed and hydraulic fluid is gone/low this works good and won't change the calibration/sync.
Be gentle. Use 2 people. Do not force anything. One person to hold down the top button to open/closed position while the other person moves the roof open/closed gently from the middle by the hook. Make sure the button is held fully down till the roof is in the full closed/open position. Might have to go back and forth on the button to get the hook to catch while gently holding roof closed enough for hook to catch....

Thank you both for your reply. I reached out to the seller (I'm a new buyer) and he told me to give a gentle push to both of the wings/flaps. Both appeared to be operating correctly but I gently pushed on each one once they were in the "open" position and this seemed to resolve the issue as it works now. Guessing one or both of the flaps were ever so slightly stuck which caused an issue with a microswitch?
Yeah I was going to suggest making sure the flaps were fully open , but there are so many things it COULD have been and I hate to guess wrong...
Normally it takes a PIWIS to verify all the microswitches are in their full open/close positions once the common failure points are checked ...
