Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

Actually I initially used an allen wrench, and I don't know if it was because my car is 9 years old(maybe the plug had been deteriorating from all of the previous changes?), but I couldn't generate enough torque with the allen wrench, and I think forcing it made it strip in the end.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Your amberectomy thread motivated me to put my clear side markers in today. I'd ordered them from Pelican a couple weeks ago but they sat in the box in my kitchen until today. I don't really mind the orange bulb in there.. but some day I might get the silver bulbs.. who knows. My daughter asked me why I did that, she liked the orange better... hrm, what does she know, she's seven, lol! I also got the oil filter, etc. that I'd ordered to do my oil change. I gotta go to an auto parts store tomorrow to find a filter wrench that will fit (it's 74mm and 14 flutes, right?) oh yeah and get oil So, wish me luck! ~kristy~

POST 2Original post

Atta girl! I have an adjustable filter wrench. I bought it because I kept forgetting the correct size I needed.

POST 3Original post

good job kristy.... this is just the beginning.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8215374

If they don't have the size I need, I'll just get the adjustable, I'm not about to go on a search for it, that's for sure

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8215407

Oh boy do I know it I told myself I was going to keep it bone stock, but a little clear side markers are nothing right? You should see how my last "fun" car ended up... I ended up selling it because I felt silly driving to work in my 5pt harnessed race seats in my dress suits, lol.

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 8215411

I can say though that I did buy the correct size from a Autozone or Advanced Auto.....it was a cheap 'formed metal' one. It slid on the filter cartridge and I couldn't get the thing to work.

At least you didnt have to drive your mom around in them..... we are a silly bunch arent we.....

POST 8Original post

Kristy, We are headed down the same path. Amberectomy, pumpkins, I'll let you know when I get the exhaust mod installed... Lovin' every minute!

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 8215364

Be really careful with the oil pan drain plug, as it strips very easily. I stripped mine trying to get it out, and had to throw the oil pan away.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 8215535

Good point. You're gonna want to pick up some metric allen wrenches. 8mm I think is the one you need. And like V225 says its easy to strip since its alum. Also make sure you have a container big enough to handle 9 qts of oil coming out at once. Take your time and you will be fine.

POST 11Original post

Actually I initially used an allen wrench, and I don't know if it was because my car is 9 years old(maybe the plug had been deteriorating from all of the previous changes?), but I couldn't generate enough torque with the allen wrench, and I think forcing it made it strip in the end. I'd suggest getting an actual hex socket and socket wrench for the job. And as Pete says, get a huge drain pan!

POST 12Original post

I'd second the socket! Oh, and just because the plug is keeping the precious oil in the motor, is no reason to over tighten it. If tight is good, tighter is NOT better. I'm sure you already knew that though;-)

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was planning on using a socket for the drain plug.. hopefully whoever did the oil changes before me did not over tighten it. but we shall see, won't we

POST 14Original post

This works well for the cartridge removal... http://www.maxspeed-motorsports.com/...er_Wrench.html

POST 15Original post

kristyhana, Don't forget a new crush washer. You can reuse the old one but much better to use a new one. Especially if this is the first change during your ownership, #of reuses of the current one is ?? You should consider one of LN engineering's drain plugs. It is hard anodized and takes a 10mm hex, both make it resistant to strip out. It also has a magnet to catch any ferrous metal bits. http://www.lnengineering.com/store/c...lug-p-113.html

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8217913

I always get a new crush washer, I don't know why anyone would reuse one. They'll give them to you for free anyway usually, or for a quarter. Anyway - thanks for the link about the LN drain plug. I'll take a look at this one when I get it out (I was super lazy today and did absolutely nothing, lol) and see if a new one is in order.

POST 17Original post

After hearing how easy it is to strip the plug I bought an extra and threw it in the oil change box just in case. It was just a few bucks and cheap insurance.
