Suggestion
Routine fluid servicings are around $1000 at the Bentley dealer and given the low use - we have it done only once a year.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

hey guys...
I'm at 150k mileage in the 7 series and i think it's about time I move on to another four door sedan.. i've always dreamed of having a bentley, or atleast experiencing the ownership experience, just once in my life.. nothing commands the presence or feeling of a bentley.. imho of course.. although i wouldn't pay $300k for that pleasure :>
i've been looking at the prices on current body style bentleys and surprised how bad the resale value on them is.. It appears they are available for under $110k... in the 99-01 model years.. and now that the new body style is coming out, i'm anticipating the price will drop even more..
anyone ever owned one or know anyone with experience with the current Bentley Arnage? are they really something to consider or mechanical nightmares? i'd be driving maybe 2-3k miles a year on it..
here's a link to a couple i found under $100k:

$110k for this beautiful 2001 model:

I wouldn't trade my 7 series for anything. Never had a better riding, dependable car in my life. Roomy, great performance, nice looking, etc. You can have a party in the back seat of the IL.
English cars run on smoke. The smoke is kept inside wires made by Lucas (aka Prince of Darkness). From time to time, the smoke will escape from the wires and the car will stop. This will necessitate a trip to the dealer (via towtruck) to have the smoke reinstalled.
You probably won't be bored
I say go for it. Bentley's are plush, smooth, stylish and are amazing rides and incredibly well built automobiles.
There will be all kinds of things that will go wrong that are quirky and annoying but if it's not your daily driver and you have a service center nearby I would give it a spin.
Life is short, enjoy.
Just curious but how many miles did your 7 series have on it when you bought it two years ago? I've never heard of a V12 (I think the 750iL was the V12 model) with that many miles!
I haven't owned a Bentley yet... maybe I'm either not much of a Gentleman or not old enough (or both), but they sure are classy.
Since you're looking for a unique luxury sedan, and want to spend about $110K US, have you checked the new Maserati Quattroporte?. I'm sure the reliability will suck (don't all pricey cars do anyway?), but that is one great looking and unique 4 door sedan, and the closest thing to a new 4 door Ferrari.
Just make sure you upgrade for the fire retarding leather interior, and buit-in extinguisher unit...
Viken, I know he said it was a 750iL because it's in the TITLE of his post.... My only comment was on the V12's ability to go 150k miles. I had never heard of someone driving a V12 car that many miles!
to the best of my knowledge the 740 was initally a 4.0 litre v8 and then changed to a 4.4 v8
the 750 was a v12
the NEW 750 has a 4.8 V8 = confused?
and one of my friends had a 1996 (back in the day) 750 which i think had 230k miles.... pretty damn good interstate cruiser
My Dad has an '01 Arnage Red Label. Great car. A couple things to consider - they are BIG [even compared to your 7-series]. They are very high profile [Dad has an S500 as his daily driver]. Just a couple things to think about. The Coachwork is incredible and they drive very well given the size and weight of them.
The first two ads you posted are Green Label cars [look at the wheel caps]. They will have the BMW engine. The 2001 you posted is a Red Label. It has the 6.75L Turbo Rolls-Royce Engine. The Turbo engine pushes the car in a very linear fashion - but it still is quick considering the 3 ton empty weight. I've never actually driven a non-Turbo Bentley - so I don't know how it compares. We've had very few major issues with the car and it's been as reliable as anything else - but my Dad's has substantially less miles than the ones you are looking at [around 8000 or so].
Personally, unless you get a Red Label or a 2002 or newer [when the Red Label became the R and the smaller engine!] - I'd say get a Rolls. They have taken a big depreciation as well, were a bit cheaper to begin with and they are essentially the same car with a column shifter instead of console one. Just like the F355 you were looking at, plan on routine maintenance costs that will run much higher than you are used to. The 3-year service is just about $2000 [we just had it done a month ago]. Routine fluid servicings are around $1000 at the Bentley dealer and given the low use - we have it done only once a year. Since you are looking at 3000 miles a year - I'd say the same schedule would work fine for you. I'm sure servicings are cheaper at an independent - but I don't have that data. Our local import independant [who services my Ferrari] doesn't want to touch the Bentley.
Exotics are like airplanes - acquisition cost is only a piece of the pie. I've always loved the Countach - and they're priced very attractively these days - but I also really don't want to deal with a $15K engine out service and clutch job as preventative maintenance. Makes the Bentley and Ferrari seem positively cheap.
Hey Bob,
I remember a couple articles on the Bentley Arnage I read a couple years ago in Autoweek magazine. I found them at their site. You may find them interesting too.
