Keep in mind dealers are notorious for putting insanely high prices on used cars, knowing they can negotiate so something then sounds like a great discount.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am just about to buy a triple black 996 C2 Cabrio 2002 with 29,000 miles and warranty till October 2006...Originally listed for $69,900 at PCNA website, the dealer listed it for $64,900 and we finally agreed to purchase for $59,000. - Black Partial Leather - Advanced Technic Package - Power Seat Package - Desiugn Package - Porsche Crest in Headrest - 18" LT Alloy Carrera Wheels - Wheel caps with coloured crests - PSM - AM/FM Radio with CD Player + 6 CD Changer - Brand new PZero's I did check NADA and price seems quite fair (Retail: $62,5K vs Trade-in: $56,3K). Am I getting screwed here you think or is this a v. good price? I did look at dealers books and the car was traded in August 2004 for a C4S - they got it for $58K...See link for actual pic/spec of car.. I'm also thinking whether to get a 2003 C4S for almost same price... rgds SM Here's URL from PCNA site showing car: http://boardwalk.porschedealer.com/p...ntoryid=113181

POST 2Original post

sounds like high mileage for that price. I would think you can buy an 02 cab with under 10k mileage for that kind of money. Don't believe the NADA books, it's really the market, seasonality and economy that drive pricing. This is just my opinion

POST 3Original post

I bought my 02 cab for $57k in Michigan thru ebay w/ 16k mi but less warranty than yours. I think it's a fair deal given you are buying from a dealer and they have to make some money. This car doesn't have bixenon?? That's a must have option so you'll want to upgrade by either buying a set on eBay or have the dealer sell you for cheap (ie, $1500). $58k you mentioned was spent on which year C4S? I wonder why someone would trade a car of almost equal value.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

djantlive, bi-xenon lights i believe are included in technic package..$58K was the trade-in price he got an 04 brand new C4S

POST 5Original post

Sounds a bit on the high side to me, but the warranty is definitely worth something. C4S might depreciate a little less (my guess); assume its a coupe, and that's a big difference depending upon what makes you happy. Good luck.

POST 6Original post

Considering it is a cab, I think that is a fair price considering that the dealer has to pay $1,600 to Porsche for the certification and its got new tires on it. I think if you spec'ed out the options, that car was originally stickered somewhere in the $90's.

POST 7Original post

It's a fair price. I have seen dealers giving you 2 years of extra warranty on cars like this. Maybe your dealer will do that too.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

actually it doesn't have the 6 year / 100K miles certification and yes you are correct it costs $1600 but it's not transferrable. My plan was to get a 997 cab but can't get decent price and/or waiting list. I just moved over here (US) from UK and need a car as I'm currently renting a Mercury Sable LOL from Hertz which costs me $600/week ( The car is in perfect condition, my gut feeling says yes, I just think it's not the deal of the century and I am worried about the mileage if I buy with 30K miles and sell in a year with 45K miles i think i'd loose something like $15K which is on the high side... Having said that I also like the C4S and I've found a 2003 all black C4S from another Porsche dealer in Dallas, TX for probably $60K.. I owned Convertible's all my life not a huge fan of coupe's.... rgds, SM

POST 9Original post

Bad logic......If you buy ANY CAR and sell it after a year chances are you WILL lose money. If you bought it with 10K and took it to 25K you WILL lose money. Sounds like you already mmade a decision for yourself. If you plan on selling it w/in a year and taking a hit to get into a 997. THEN WAIT TO GET THE 997!

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

LVDell I agree w/you - reality is though any car you buy you'll lose money. I can afford to get a 997 S $85K but I really want a convertible and none of the dealers in TX can put me on waiting list. I need a car in mean time so my options really were/are: (1) 996 2002 C2 Cabrio as mentioned @ $59K with 30K miles (2) 997 C2S Couple brand new @ $85K Within a years time I will be trading it for a 997 Cabrio .... Dealer told me I'd get equal hit (in the range of $10K with either vehicle if I traded back in a years time) and given I want a cabrio I thought I might go for option (1)... rgds, SM

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Actually just thought I'd add this - initially I was looking for a Boxster S 2005 Triple black which was also priced $59K with all extras. Then I thought 911 is more of a porsche

POST 12Original post

I think the 02 cab is the way to go of the two choices. Best scenario would be getting 997 cab since that's what you really want and are willing to pay for. If the wait isn't that long, I'd consider getting a long term monthly lease car for a few month, perhaps taking a lease over from someone for a few month? There are tons of nice lease cars with <6mo of lease period to tie you over.

POST 13Original post

If you really want the 997 Cab then you would be foolish to buy the new 997S and sell it in a year. The '02 has already taken the big hit when it was first sold. Sure, you will lose something on it over the next year - but nowhere near the hit you would take on a one year old 997. Lastly, the '02 is a cab, which is what it seems like you want.

POST 14Original post

The Porsche Certified Pre-Owned warranty IS transferrable, and the cost is $1549.00.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hmmm I was told by the dealer that it wasn't but they'd be willing to charge me cost price if I wanted it. You see this is my problem, I know it's overspec'ed I just think for $59K mileage is a bit high. I can get a C4S at same price with 13K miles granted not black but arctic silver/black.. I'm just puzzled and not sure what to do..You see originally the car had a $69.9K tag, when I saw the car on the dealer it was advertized at $64.9 and then when I said how negotiable are you they dropped it down to $59K - I left a $1000 deposit and I'm now waiting for my SSN (just moved to US) in order to get insurance then pay the rest and pick up the car. From that point I brought up the issue of either dropping further the price, or including the warranty or the tail pipe exhaust system and they adamantly reject it. Shoud I try harder or even walk away from this deal? The car was originally sold to a dentist from Boardwalk Porsche Dealer in Dallas TX and it's in amazing condition apart from one small scratch on the back somebody keyed it a while back... Would you walk away from the deal or not?

POST 16Original post

Keep in mind dealers are notorious for putting insanely high prices on used cars, knowing they can negotiate so something then sounds like a great discount. Also, I think their claim that they gave 58K in trade for the car is either BS or they made a pile of dough on the new car they sold the dentist. Not saying 59K is not an OK price, just my take on the dealer's game.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Jim - I did see the $58K trade in price unfortunately don't remember how much they charged him for his C4S Cabrio if I remember correctly but something in the $87K range... The thing which troubles me is the vehicle was traded back in August and it had according to carfax 27,700 miles approx at that time. Between August and today it got 1300miles which i think is a lot more than "test drives"... bottom line is that I feel $58K is not even an OK price for the mileage.... but that maybe me - the 997 Convertible is in the $85K range... why would a 3 year old end of line with 30,000 miles go for 2/3 of new price??
