POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I am in the market for a 911. I have narrowed my options down to 2 cars. My main concern is not performance but rather reliability as in ims or rms as both cars have mileage in the 60s. here are my options 04 40th anniversary fully loaded with 63000 for 30500 or 02 C4S with decent options and 67,000 for 32,400 I like the looks of the c4s way better but the 40th is no joke either especially since it's a limited edition. thanks for your help.

POST 2Original post

My choice would be the 40th, mainly because of the rear wheel drive and the extra HP. However, you can't go wrong with either one!

POST 3Original post

reliability is the same. The 40th is a very nice car and nearly as fast as a 997S.1

POST 4Original post

I take the 40th. Loaded with goodies (including the very $$ X51 package) but without the weight and AWD of the 4S. It's the best N/A 996 there is (except for the GT3) IMHO.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 6608116

Are either of these available with a warranty? If so, that would protect you from any potential IMS problem.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

both don't have waranties. I had a boxster in 02 so I know the fear of explosion and leakage. I was leaning towards the 40 as well, here's the link to the cars. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2004-...1%7C240%3A1308 and http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Carre...1%7C240%3A1318 I do notice the c4s is in better condition from the pics. but both are in my pricerange.

POST 7Original post

4S!! No Contest!! Just look at that car! It's friggin gorgeous!! You can't go wrong w/ a 4S.

POST 8Original post

depends what you want... 40th would be good tho...

POST 9Original post

That's a tough call; both I think would be great 911s to own. I would try to find a C4S and a C2 locally to you to drive and see what you think; how it feels; how you anticipate to use it [weather?].

POST 10Original post

I own a 4S, but at the mileage and prices for both, I'd go for the 40th. It's faster and despite the looks of the 4S, which are great, if I were in the market for another P-car now, it would have RWD.

POST 11Original post

Here's my .02. The C4S looks better IMO. But the 40th has the X51, is lighter, and could possibly hold it's value better. So it's looks versus performance, show versus go, whichever is more important to you. Judging from the pics, which is a dangerous thing to do, the C4S does seem to be in better shape. It also looks to be lowered while the 40th has stock suspension that you'll want to change. Figure a couple thousand for that. If you feel they each have their own advantages I'd PPI both of them and whichever seems more sound and has the best documentation should carry the day.

POST 12Original post

Also I'd be inclined to go with the 04 rather than the 02 in addition to all the other valid points mentioned.GL

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 6608834

I remember seeing the 04 40th Anniversary when they were new and they were very nice. I'd lean towards the '04 too.

POST 14Original post

Drive both! One of the cars will jump out and tell you to take it home.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 6608854

I don't know where the original poster is from but one of these is in Anaheim and the other in Arizona.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I live in Austin, TX. thanks for the input fellas. I'm now leaning towards the 40th despite the turbo look. I just know I will fret the long drive back from CA. I saw on Ebay that there is a Car Max inspection done on it already.

POST 17Original post

A Car Max inspection is good for precisely nothing. Please put no faith in that and certainly don't rely on it. Listen to the advice you are being given and have the car inspected prior to purchase by an a dealer or and indy Porsche shop. You don't really know anything about these cars yet. Get service records and the PPI before you commit.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 6608965

That's very good advice. Also, that way, if it needs anything critical, you could have it done before the long drive home, and negotiate the cost down to cover what it needs. Good luck.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 6608116

The 2002 C4S engine has a newer style black oil cap instead of the older style yellow one. I'm wondering if it's had an engine replaced. Whichever car you choose, you will need to get a PPI. Preferably from a Porsche dealer so they can run the VIN and get a partial service history on the car. They can see if the engine's been swapped or other repairs under warranty. If you are really concerned about reliability, many Porsche dealers will sell you an aftermarket extended warranty if the car passes PPI. It's not CPO, but it's usually a reputable insurer. Just make sure that your local dealer accepts that warranty.

POST 21Original post

I'd get the 40th for sure. I wouldn't worry about the drive back either - however far the drive back was. These cars are great on road trips, and it's a good way to get to know your car - and fun, too.

POST 22Original post

I'm biased but I'd vote for the 40th. I bought mine in Baltimore and drove it back to Tulsa. It was an enjoyable drive and gives you some "away" time to enjoy your new car!

POST 23Original post

I would go with the 40th too. Faster, factory lowered suspension, GT Silver, most have all the options posible(nav and rear wiper were only options you could get, I beleive), and I think it will hold is value longer because it was a limited edition. Which ever car you get get a PPI. Do put trust in Carmax, Carfax, or any other car history report.

POST 24Original post

It's taking me longer to type this than to think about it.... 40th no doubt. But as a previous 40th owner, I'm biased.

POST 25Original post

Whatever you decide, buy a piece of mind and get an aftermarket warranty.

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the advice, I have put down a refundable deposit on the 04 anniversary. I plan on closing the deal on Wednesday-Thursday so I'm ordering a PPI on the car tomorrow. Do the inspectors come out to the dealer's lot or does the dealer need to bring the car to the place where they do the inspection? It's in Anaheim CA. Thanks

POST 27Original post

I like your decision! I chose a 40th over a 4S after driving each for a half day. Both were one year old and lightly used. I liked the looks of the 4S, but the significant performance gap made the decision easy for me. Good luck with the PPI, and +1 on the aftermarket warranty.

You call the Porsche dealer and set up the appointment. If you are **** retentive (like I am) it's useful to give them a written list of specific things to check e.g. IMS/RMS leak, presence of all tools, manuals, keys, Type 1+2 over revs etc.. In all likelihood you will speak to the service writer who will not be the tech who actually inspects the car which is why a checklist is helpful. You pay the dealer directly. You can also ask the dealer about warranties they can offer you. Then you call the seller and tell them to drop off the car at the specified time and date.

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 6612805

What is the difference in a Type 1 or 2 over rev.?

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 6612906

Type 1 is bump against the rev-limiter while type 2 is usually a mechanical over-rev (missed down shift).

POST 31Original post

It seems there are suddenly more than a few 3.6 996 examples out there in the 30k range. Not sure how long you're looking to own, but let's say 4 years and 5k/year. Unloading even a nice example limited edition 911 with 80k on it will be harder than a lower mileage C2 in my opinion. Saw this on autotrader, 2002 C2 with 30k: http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...r_id=261555831 Slate grey (I'm biased on this color ) and natural full leather interior. 30k miles. Provided the carfax is straight and there's no hidden surprises (and you like the funky GT2-ish front bumper cover), that would be more along the lines of what I'd spend my 30k on. You can buy more warranty that way if you plan on keeping it a long time, and the resale will likely be the same or higher than a higher-mileage C4S or 40th. Get a PPI and a warranty. That way, you know there's no IMS/RMS/other costly acronym and if there is down the road, it doesn't cost you five figures. And I highly recommend you drive whatever you buy like you stole it!

POST 34 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's good advice, I actually passed on the cali 40th as it was too hard buying a car b4 looking at it. I found a 40th only 170 miles away from me with 32000 miles for 35,000. I think i need to research this one.

POST 35 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I pulled the trigger on my dream car yesterday. I bought it from the owner of http://www.protechnik.com/ in Houston. It's a super clean ride with only 1 ding but he will pull it out this Saturday. Car has 32000 miles and you have to look to find wear on the inside. I've been reading about IMS and RMS for over a week now and it sure is scary. There really is no piece of mind on those two things but I'm willing to live with it as 911s sure are nice.

POST 37Original post

Pics? Seriously - sounds great. As the owner of that establishment - did he have any suspension work done on it? Seems like he would... Pics?

POST 38 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yep, I got the 40th. He kept it bone stock. He told me the reason he did this was he wanted more power then what was offerred on the S so this was the cheapest solution to adding more power. As far as getting mass power, he said the cheapest way to do that was to get a turbo as turbos are really easy to mod/reprogram. No sense turning an non-aspirated to something that can never be quicker then a modded turbo. He never did anything to the suspension, but he did give me a quote of 1500 for pss9s installed! I'm not much of a racer as I want to make this car last me as long as it will since my wife isn't going to approve this decision again for awhile. I did find a cheap solution to RMS and IMS for anyone buying a m96 porsche. I am buying the warranty from my credit union for only 1580.00 that covers engine, transmission and the rest of be basic mechanicals.

POST 40Original post

C4S, hands down. But I love the wide rear and AWD

POST 41Original post

POST 42Original post

Quotes source post: 6624166

Excellent choice. As I said before, I saw them brand new in the showroom in 2004 and they were beautiful! I know you'll be enjoying it! Best of luck!

POST 43Original post

40th hands down... but he 40th had the single bearing IMS which usually fail... @ 60,000 miles you'd have to do compression, leakdown test as well.... if it were my car and it was out of warranty I'd have that single bearing IMS replaced with Jake Raby's solution just for peace of mind... but the leakdown should be key...was the car tracked at all? most X51 cars are tracked hard then sold off on open market...

POST 44 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, here is my car as promised, it's a pretty awesome machine. It came with 33,500 miles so it's in tip top shape with near none signs of use. I'm not worried about the IMS yet since I got a warranty on engine, transmission and all major parts. I will have all the test done before the warranty ends at 70,000 miles. If IMS or RMS does hit, then I will claim the insurance and have the new part installed. Thanks for your tips and advice in making this purchase.
