Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

OK - the local 99' 996 C4/Tip with 54K miles is literally like new. New engine installed 2K miles ago and the car drives, smells, rides like new. The paint on the car, inside the door sills, trunk, every where is perfect, perfect. No paint work ever - has Litronics, rear wiper (good for some - like me, not good for others), 6-cd changer and a bunch more comfort related options. Couple questions for you experienced 996 maniacs:
Throttle pedal feels kind of firm, yet mushy. I'm told that the 99's are electronic throttle - is that true and is the stiff, weird pedal 'normal'?
When starting hot, it seems to turn over slowly - weak battery, new engine tight or...?
Guys - I think the tip is kind of cool. With a little practice, you can probably shift it just as fast and sure as the 6-speed - I think. But there's only 5-speeds???
The engine was of course from Porsche and the seller (a car dealer that I trust) indicated that the replacement engines are literally drop-in & turn-key. In other words it is the entire engine with ancillaries: A/c, exhaust - everything - just drop it in and go. I did not know that. He replaced the expansion tank during the engine R&R. Heres' the story: He had sold the car previously and the engine went bad shortly after. He bought the car back from the guy and then ate a new engine. I am going to pay mid-to-short 20's for it.
The car is perfect in every respect and I have a hankerin' to buy it. Observations and questions I should ask would be appreciated.
BTW: the other car I'm mulling is a 99' w/95K miles, Limited slip, 6-spd, etc and the guy wants 18K for it.
Oh yeah, its GR over black - schweet.

Mar, the '99 has a throttle cable.
Low body mileage, new engine and accessories............not much thinking there for me.
New engine would have some/all of updates that Porsche did for RMS/IMS issues.
Go for it!
my 2 cents!

For what its worth - I've got a '99 C4 and it turns over a bit "weak" as you say, almost like the battery is low (but it isn't). I've had it since last summer, and its always been that way.
Thanks for the input!!! I just reviewed the 'List procedure for dissassmbly, clean & lube of the throttle pedal ***'y and I'm hoping that the C4 procedure is similar and will yield equally similar results
Alternatively, I could simply order a new assembly from Sunset and drop it in when I get a chance.
This brings up a question I was going to ask. I'm in the market for a 996 also, but I was wondering what an engine replacement does for the value of the car. Also, what was the "catastrophic failure" that some early 996's had that was fixed on later engines?

My (new to me) 1999 C4 turns over weakly like the battery is low too. Often it does not turn over at all - no starter sound, no nothing except dash lights. I have to keep trying till it does. One of these days I fear it'll just not start at all. Mechanic just shrugged when I asked him.
What does the voltage guage do when you are cranking the car? I would also jump the car and see if it cranks better. If so, I bet its the battery as my battery lasts no longer than 3 years. $80 at autozone.
