Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

For $20k something sounds wrong with this ad....does it include a motor?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The seller claimed that they were a title company that took re-possession of the car. If there wasnt a foot of snow on the ground here I would take a ride today along with any other local Chicago area Rennlisters if interested.

POST 9Original post

$20K is not too far off for this car, BTW. Given the state of the economy and the winter weather this car would probably not sell for more than 26-27K.

POST 10Original post

Is everyone skipping over the 'not actual mileage' part of the ad? I know CarFax isn't the be-all and end-all when it comes to vehicle history but if it reports the mileage not to match then that's a good cause for concern.

POST 12Original post

I checked into it. I didn't go see the car because I'm out of state, but it's in an impound yard. They won't let anyone take it to a shop to get inspected. They won't let anyone take it for a test drive. Oh yeah, there's a mileage discrepancy where it shows 33k, then 85k, then 34kish.... They don't hide this, but the fact that I couldn't get a ppi done made me not even bother.

POST 13Original post

considering the mileage issues and the impound lot issues, this seller is not in a realistic position to command $20k FIRM. sooner or later he'll figure it out.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 5057000

Sure he is...if the car starts up and lot drives and nothing seems "funny", it's probably EASILY worth $20k.

POST 15Original post

not to me. if i had to buy a $20k car without being able to test drive it, and it had a mileage discrepancy, i would need a serious incentive (i.e. a super bargain) especially when repairs are such a pain in the a$$ on this car.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 5055430

Steve: Wow that almost sounds too good to be true. But yeah, I'de be very suspicous on this one. Especially since they declair a descrepency in the mileage. PPI for sure! 99C2

Thanks for the info. I was going to call this guy but no use wasting a buck on LD charges. No PPI, no test drive... too suspicious.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As soon as it stops snowing here, I am going to look at this car, probably tomorrow. Its a C4. The seller is ok with a PPI but we may have to flat bed it since it has no plates. Now how am I going to explain to my wife why I want to sell my TDI for a 4wd 911...

POST 19Original post

Here is another cheap one and I think he may win the mileage game http://tampa.craigslist.org/car/563886730.html

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 5057028

Absolute worst case scenario = dumping it on eBay for $20k I'm not suggesting that someone buy this car expecting to take it on a 2k mile trip the next day, but if it starts up without smoking, lot drives under its own power, and doesn't look bad cosmetically, it's worth taking a chance on for the right price. As poorly as 996s have been holding their value lately, there appears to be an absolute bottom-line of $15-20k even for a NON-RUNNING car. I don't think a running 996 will be worth less than $15k any time soon.

POST 21Original post

What year was it, the ad is now gone. As for the price, just let me say that my '99 which is in excellent shape although with 94,000 miles only gets an offer of around $20,000 on a trade. I had one non-Porsche dealer tell me he would only give $17,000. The market for older 996's with mileage is really tough right now. If you are buying you can find some real bargains.

How do you know it's a c4? It's strange that the ad would not mention it. Victor didn't bring it up on the phone either.

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The Carfax has some references to C4 but I will let you know as soon as I see it.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 5078000

I've seen several carfaxes say "carrera 2/4" or even "carrera 4" but both the owner & the badging clearly say otherwise. Here's to hoping though!

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 5075076

Eh, your first mistake is believing that what a dealer offers you is what the car is worth. As much as dealers and Rennlisters would like you to believe otherwise, these cars are NOT $17k cars yet. Hell, here's a '99 C2 with 81k that needs a new engine that went for $19.6k on eBay--not exactly the most expensive place to buy one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1999-...em170187456073

POST 27Original post

$20k on trade sounds right to me. I'm seeing 99s privately go for $22000 -> $26000 for average specimins, depending on condition & mileage. I guess whoever bought that $19.6 car will be all in for $27-$28k after repairs which isn't too bad for a car with a new engine.

POST 28Original post

Quotes source posts: 5079796, 5079796

Even on eBay they're going for more than that on average. The '99s average OVER $26k there (about $27k ignoring the one that needed the engine, and yes, I actually did all the math), and we all know that's about the cheapest place you'll find a 996, save dealer auctions or the like that most of us can't purchase from. I don't think the depreciation is nearly as bad as some like to think. On top of that, winter is always the worst time to sell a sports car. It's not nearly as great a deal if you're on your own for hauling it and taking care of the engine swap. I probably wouldn't have paid that much and I think 996s are worth more than you do already.

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 5079623

I agree the trade in is not what the car is worth, but it is all most dealers will give you right now. I have gotten substantial discounts on every used Porsche I have ever bought, generally 5 or 6 thousand under what the listed price is. I have done the same thing with lots of Audis. Never believe that the advertised price is what you have to pay. Buying and selling Porsches here in NJ is a real cutthroat business. Prices here are generally lower than most other parts of the country. Of course when the economy is good, there are lots of people with money and then you can get some really good money for your car. Have to catch those Wall Street types when that bonus check is burning a hole in their pocket.

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 5080604

Crappy trade-in values are all the dealers will EVER give you, and I don't know anyone that pays the advertised price, either--they'd be severely overpaying. And it's not just the Porsche dealers--this is true for virtually all dealers.

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 5080037

I just watched a '99 with 24k miles only attract $25.6. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=160204576498 Ebay's a funny place, sometimes items seem to sell for too much, others for too little.

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 5082338

Which is entirely why I'm averaging the sell price of all the '99s in completed auctions. They AVERAGE over $26k--about $27k if you ignore the one with the blown engine. I'm not sure what point you're trying to prove now, but my simple math has already disproven your $22-26k point. Most of us being 996 owners in this 996 forum, I'm not sure why so many people are adamantly trying to convince everyone that these cars aren't worth anything, because they're really doing just fine. Not that I have any plans on selling mine...

POST 33Original post

Quotes source post: 5082355

I'm reporting my own observations- no more, no less. Unfortunately it's impossible to "disprove" the fact that I've spoken to actual sellers and they tell me how much their cars have gone for. edit: to be fair i am specifically searching out lower-priced 99s. There may be plenty that sell for a lot more which i don't see. So I'm not disagreeing with you, just commenting that a dealer offering $20k to start isn't too strange.

POST 34Original post

FWIW, i spoke to the owner of the car today... suddenly the story changed, and they will NOT allow the car to be taken to the dealership.

POST 35Original post

Grant, Before you get too carried away with telling 996 owners how cheap they are, why don't you post some pics of your car and put 17 bucks down for a membership.
