I am totally willing to accept that the C1 connector is the direction that I need to take in order to remedy this problem, but the reason I didn't go that route initially was due to the wiring that existed when I removed the aftermarket radio.

Problem is the white noise ( I am awaiting for the adapter from Porsche) and automatic volume adjustment during acceleration (we will see if anything change after installtion of adapter, but I doubt).

Also, I am still not sure what to do with that one red/black wire...
I bought a new PCCM+ unit from Suncoast earlier this week, and attempted an install today. Shortcut to my overall problem: no sound from the speakers. Unit powers up, recognizes my iPhone via Apple CarPlay, but I am not getting any sound from the speakers. Not even static.
As a background, my 996 is a 1999 C2 w/ a single DIN aftermarket Pioneer head unit and a factory Amp. After removing the Pioneer unit, and cutting out its harness, this is what the wiring looked like:
The black connector on the left corresponds to the "A" connection set of pins. The mess of wires on the right, which add up to 9 total wires, were spliced into the aftermarket Pioneer unit. The odd wire out is the red/black wire that is spliced into TWO other wires (orange wire labeled 'dimmer' and a blue/white wire). The remaining 8 wires were all paired together, and my ASSUMPTION was that these needed to be re-pinned into the "B" connector piece. Luckily, the PCCM+ box included a repin set for both the A and B connectors. However, it did not include any sort of installation instructions.
After repinning those 8 wires into B, I then plug-and-played all the accessories (microphone, apple carplay receiver, some kind of control unit, radio antenna) into the PCCM+ unit. Turned the car on, and the unit fired right up! However, I wasn't able to get any sound from the speakers. Radio was tuning properly, but no sound. Plugged my phone into the receiver, and apple carplay started right up, but couldn't get any sound to play from Spotify or iTunes or Siri (Siri could hear me via the microphone, but I could not hear her voice). I found a thread about a guy who also couldn't get sound from his speakers after his PCCM+ install, and his remedy was to change the sound settings to 'Amp'. I changed the same setting, but still: no sound.
Does anyone have any ideas for where I may have stumbled? My guess is that red/black needs to be pinned/connected to something, but I have no idea where it needs to go, or what its function is--does anyone know? It's possible I blew a fuse to the speakers (I forgot to disconnect the negative lead when I was removing the Pioneer unit). Any ideas for troubleshooting are welcome!
I already tried that (the attempt is buried in the 2nd to last paragraph of my OP). Still, no sound.
No idea if I have a MOST system. How do I know if I do/dont?
How do I perform a power reset? All I was doing was turning the car off, and checking to make sure that the setting was still Amp.
I was pretty sure that being a 99 precluded me from the MOST system. And, also, it isnt a Bose stereo/speaker setup. But it does have an Amp in the trunk mounted just behind the spare wheel.
Any idea what that errant black/red wire does? Another user in a different thread suggested that it be pinned into the A connector.
I think I know whats going on. Youre using the the B (brown connector) pinout where you should be using the C (yellow connector) pinout. So you have the line (pre-amp) outs from the head unit trying to drive the speakers directly.
I have a 99 with the HiFi system too (amp in the frunk, door speakers). I have a black connector and a yellow connector - no brown connector.
Here is what mine looks like:
The black connector in the background accepts the constant power, switched power, and ground wires from the head unit.
The yellow connector (plugged into the red harness) accepts the (4) pre-amp output pairs from the head unit and the 12v switched power to turn on the amp.
This could very well solve my problem. Any idea where I can find a yellow pin out set? The PCCM+ box only contained a black and brown set.
Also, I am still not sure what to do with that one red/black wire...
what do you mean by yellow pin out set - are you looking for the yellow plug?
It might be helpful if you posted pictures of how you have it hooked up now.
Ok. I found this post that youve probably already seen.
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...pccm-plus.html
After reading a bit more, I might have been sending you down the wrong path with the yellow adapter. It looks like the PCCM+ only has one set of outputs for speakers, and you use a setting to control whether they are speaker level or line level (for external amps). So if you connected all your speaker wires to the brown connector and set the head unit to AMP mode, that all seems correct.
However, youre right that the black/red wire needs to connect to something because its the power switch for your amp. That in itself would explain why you dont have any sound.
In the post above, it seems the author wired that directly into the 12v outlet. That seems like a hack and I have to believe Porsche intends for that to come from the head unit. Is there nothing in the instruction about 12v switched power or amp connections?
Would the 12V outlet be the wire running from the cigarette lighter? So, do I just splice that red/black wire into that 12V outlet wire?
There are ZERO installation instructions included in the PCCM+ box. When you open the box the first thing you see is a note stating Schedule an appointment with your nearest Porsche dealer for installation.
Yes!
Fitting ground line: On vehicles
(1997–2001) with M662 (PCM
generation 1) and M680 (Digital
sound package), an additional
ground line 996.642.587.00 must be routed to the amplifier. So, if you have this setup, you will need the additional ground line.
I am not absolutely sure this will fix your issue, but this an installation step required if you have PCM1 and DSP.
I don’t have a picture, but this is the connector to the amplifier.
1. Disconnect black 18-pin connector from the amplifier. Remove fuse on connector housing and disconnect and insulate (DSP data) line, contact no. 17 black/red/yellow.
2. Connect additional ground line 996.642.587.00 at contact no. 17. Re-fit connector housing.
3. Secure ground line at the ground points. Re-fit black connector on the amplifier.
Remove/connect the negative battery terminal
It looks like you have a standard CR220 radio. Is your amplifier standard Porsche in your car, or is it aftermarket?

thank you!
As far as I can tell the amp is original to the car. I did not remove it, it I could see that it says Haes and has a part number that begins with 996.
So what should my next step(s) be to get sound pumping through the speakers?
Did you ever do anything with the red/black wire? That's the wire that tells the amp to turn on. It needs to have 12V applied when the radio is on.
So, answer me this: is there a white wire attached to the black plug A in slot #5? If there is that is the signal to turn on the radio antenna. I would tap the black/red wire into that white wire, if it exists. You will want to have both the white and black/red wire hooked up or you will get no radio reception.
Havent done anything to the red/black wire yet as I am waiting for instruction as to what exactly I need to do with it.
I just checkedthere is a white wire in the #5 slot (assuming I am counting the slot numbers correctly). Regardless of the count, there is only one solid white wire in that entire space.
So, all I need to do is strip part of the insulation from the white wire to expose some of the wire and then wrap the red/black wire around the part I just exposed? Is there a better way to splice these wires together?
Let's all take a DEEP breath!
I may be able to help. I can't reach through the computer, but maybe I can get you into the RIGHT frame of mind. I've personally installed aftermarket radios on both analog (like yours) Porsche 996 as well as a MOST based 996.
Here's what you MUST do to make this new system happen:
FIRST - You must THINK like the engineer that designed the ORIGINAL Porsche/Becker/HAES system in your car and work backward to find out what is missing and what you need to complete the new PCCM system.
You have the earliest analogy HiFI systems.
That is, your car had a CR220 Becker radio that FED a 4-channel line level audio signal(s) to the HAES amp in the frunk. Then, the amp's speaker level output fed the 6 speakers in your car. (dash, door, and rear)
It appears that the previous owner cut the YELLOW C1 connector NOT... That's NOT the B-connector. I repeat, IMHO... that's NOT the B connector that was cut off.
Look at the diagram....
In your radio setup, the Headunit was NOT used to power the speakers. (notice outputs on diagram) Therefore, there was NOT a B connector. In some base cars, the B connector would have been used to output to the speakers for sound. In your case, it was not used.
Instead, the C1 connector was used to output to the AMP in the frunk. Then the output from the amp powers the speakers.
Here this is an old wiring harness pulled from a '99 Porsche Becker/HAES system like yours...
Notice anything in particular? Look at the C1 yellow connector. Notice the lines that look similar to yours?
IMHO, those are the audio line level outputs to GO TO the amp. These lines are NOT meant to be connected to a speaker level output on your PCCM.
Now, I'll stop right here so that you can examine what I've offered.
I am totally willing to accept that the C1 connector is the direction that I need to take in order to remedy this problem, but the reason I didn't go that route initially was due to the wiring that existed when I removed the aftermarket radio. Looking at the original picture I posted to start this thread there are 4 pairs of pigtail wires and a lone red/black wire, which makes a total of 9 wires. The C1 connector can only accept 6 wires. What do I do with the other wires, and what do I do with the re/black wire? If it powers amp, what do I need to splice it into so it receives power?
You need to connect the red/black wire to a 12V line that is live when the radio is on. The white wire in the Plug A position 5 provides this. The pin numbers are molded into the plug or you can google up "DIN Radio Plug" to get a picture showing the positions.
So, yes, splice the red/black wire into the white wire AFTER you check it's going to position 5 on plug A.
Make sure your PCM+ is set to Line Output or you will get mega distortion by overdriving the amp inputs. I don't know how to do this, it was listed earlier in this thread.
I'm not responsible if this doesn't work. I *believe* this to be correct.
First, go to the frunk and take a picture of the two multipin cables connected to the HAES amp. Make sure you get a CLEAR picture of all colored cables! Unbolt the amp bracket so that you can remove the amp for the picture.
This will help! I promise you.
Here's a picture of the two connectors.
I have depart for a time, but I'll check in later.
This is important...
It's my understanding that Porsche assumes that you are installing the PCCM+ system in an "unmolested" OEM legacy Porsche audio system. Therefore, it needs to be put back to a baseline (i.e. stock) before moving forward.
Until we get to that point, it will be a bumpy road. After that... smooooooth sailing!
I spliced the red/black wire into the white wire and wrapped the connection with electrical tape.
I NOW HAVE SOUND through the speakers. However, I am getting quite a bit of feedback (car on, engine off) and the volume is quite loud even when set to a very low volume level. Do I need a ground loop isolator, or do I need to make a new ground? I tried to attach a video of the sound to this post, but am having difficulty.
I saw this after I spliced the wires, unfortunately. I will get a picture of the connectors and update.
Congrats!
You need to go back through this thread and reset the PCCM+ to LINE LEVEL outputs. It was in here, somewhere. You have it set for SPEAKER LEVEL outputs and it's overdirving the amp inputs & causing that distortion.
Im not immediately recalling where this happened in the thread... I remember the setting for switching to Amp via holding the volume buttonare you referring to that? It seems like just setting it to amp like I did is incomplete/incorrect.
You are going to have to figure out how to set the thing for the proper output levels, I don't have one and cannot help you. Poke around in the setup menus and see what you can find.
If all else fails you can buy a speaker level to line level converter, look on Amazon or at Crutchfield.
Do you recall where this was in the thread? I am not finding it via the search function, and did not have any luck finding anything relevant in the instruction manual. Does anyone with a PCCM+ know how to change the output setting to LINE level?
I started perusing line level to speaker level converters, but am unsure how they would exactly fit into my setup. Would I need RCA cables?
https://www.crutchfield.com/S-oa2vCf...UaArQ9EALw_wcB
As you can tell, speakers are not my forte...
@T3C
What several of us are assuming is that changing the sound setting to Amp changes the outputs to line level. Go back and make sure the head unit is set to Amp mode as you described in the first post.
Ah ok. Yes, I did that. Also performed a hard reset via disconnecting the negative battery lead, and then made sure it was still set to Amp. Still getting feedback, though.
What if I try a new ground wire? Splice a new ground into the existing ground wire from the A plug via a self-tapping screw into the metal frame sitting behind the head unit? The other guy who installed a PCCM+ had get an ISO adapter, but Im not sure how that would fit into my setup.
The SPEAKER-LEVEL ONLY outputs from that PCCM connector that you're using doesn't surprise me. And, based on the 4-5 Porsche units I've dealt with (including a PCM), I wouldn't be surprised that you can't change the speaker level outputs to LIVE LEVEL on that specific output connector either. The LINE LEVEL outputs usually came from a different connector such as the YELLOW C1 connector on past models such as the CR/CDR-220. But looks like you haven't taken my advice to rethink how you installing this unit and are going in a different direction. WIth that, I wish you all the best OP on finding a solution.
Well hold on, man. You couldn't answer a fundamental question for me: if I follow your route then what do I do with the extra wires? I have 8 pigtail speaker wires, but C1 only has 6 pins. What do I do with the extra 2 speaker wires? I'm not saying that I am done with this project by any means. Just stating that I now have sound--albeit distorted right now--by splicing the red/black wire into the white wire from the A connector.
I've been away from the computer since my last post. Think through what I've trying to tell you. Don't get wound up trying to count wires. Many connectors will have + and - lines that are shared with other connectors. For example, the YELLOW C1 connector would have 5 + line outputs and one negative. In the case, the original OEM YELLOW C1 shares cables with the original BLACK A1 connector. If you really want the easy route IMHO... then that means you need to get the wires and connections BACK to a BASELINE. Removed the HAES amp in the frunk and POST a picture of the amp's connectors and wires like I requested. Trace those cables BACK to the head unit. Confirm that NONE are missing. Solder the missing original OEM Becker YELLOW C1 connector to the cut lines. Looks like you're missing the YELLOW connector. You should purchase one IMHO. Once the cables are returned to the original factory setup, then I would move forward with installing the PCCM. I don't have access to the installation manuals for the new PCCM and so I'm working blind here unless you can post pdf documents if they're available.
Once you remove the amp for the mount, you'll notice you have two connectors (as shown in the image in my previous post).
The large white connector is the SPEAKER LEVEL outputs from the amp; PLUS, the 12V+ and - that come from the car's fuse box. The smaller black connector on the amp, is for the LINE LEVEL inputs, and 12V remote from the head unit.
@b3freak
If you look above, youll see that I had the same advice as you initially. Im used to hooking up line level outs to the Yellow connector on the car.
However, after reading a few other posts from owners of PCCM+ units, it appears the unit doesnt have typical RCA pre-amp outputs and does not come with a wiring harness that matches up to the yellow connector. So Im not sure how you access the line level output from the head unit. If you have suggestions on that particular point, Im sure the OP would appreciate it.
What I'm trying to do is get the OP's original wire harness back to a baseline... that is, in it's original stock form. This would be the most reasonable method moving forward. It's impossible to see through the computer and identify what's been cut and/or removed in his original Becker CR220 system. If I had to make a wild guess, the previous owner cut off the Yellow plug, and rigged the SPEAKER LEVEL outputs of the Pioneer into the LINE LEVEL inputs of the HAES Amp. This is really poor workmanship. This would mean the high voltage outputs are feeding the amp's LINE LEVEL inputs which translates to DISTORTION. Basically, you're overdriving the amp.
Now, as I've mentioned before, I don't have access to the newest PCCM installation instructions or wiring diagrams. The OP should post if available in pdf form. Maybe even post a photograph of the wiring diagrams? That would help.
Here is a clearer image of the back of an original Porsche/Becker CR220. Notice the stock connectors. This system in the image obviously has the optional CD changer which uses the GREEN and BLUE plugs.
I fee like a broken record here, but I will repeat again: THERE ARE NO INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS. There are are no diagrams stating what the various connections at the back of the unit do. There is a manual that informs you how to work through Apple CarPlay, and change the color of the buttons, but thats about it. Porsche really intended this to be installed by a professional it seems.
I will provide a picture of the Amp later this afternoon.
I'm trying to be nice here, because you seem like you've gotten yourself in a mess, but STOP with the attitude or you're on your own!!! Period.
You've posted to several threads and I'm not going to comb through every post and thread you're apart of. If you don't want my help, fine; I have better things to do with my time.
(see attached image) Are you telling me that within these three Porsche books (red arrow) are not installation instructions of any kind? What are they?
You Tube
Ok. I think Ive put it all together now. The photo from b3phreak is the key.
OP: I agree that you need to get those loose wires back into a yellow connector. All 9 of them. Once you do, you should be able to plug it directly into the back of the new head unit.
I found this photo on a different post. But compare the connector slot thats closest to the edge with the photo that B3phreak posted. I bet the yellow plug goes in the position closest to the screen.
you might be able to get a salavager or someone with a parts car to cut off the yellow connector with some wires attached to make a pigtail that you can crimp or solder onto the loose wires from your dash.
Yay!!! Now you're thinking right. Hopefully we'll convence the OP to do the same.
On an "all-in-wonder" radio system like the Porsche PCCM+, you have to think about the marketing and engineering behind such a device. Think about it... Porsche wants to sell as many of these thing as possible. And they learned that from the last Classic Porsche radio for the 993. With this system, they've gone a step beyond anything before. That is, they've made this ONE unit serve many cars and options - both MOST and Analog OE setups.
There was a tremendous amount of electronic innovations from the beginning of the Boxster in 1997 and the end of the 996 in 2005. Porsche has really thought this thing through.
But that means you have to think like they designed it. That is, they're not wanting you try to integrate the system with aftermarket components. They're expecting the system replaces a factory setup and that includes the original wiring harnesses and connectors. Therefore, it's in the best interest of the OP to return the legacy analog back to the original state or baseline. From there, it will be easier to install the newer unit.
It appears he's hard wired the speaker-level output of the new PCCM+ unit to the line-level inputs of the existing HAES amplifier. He needs to look through the manual and identify how the unit intergrates with older analogy systems. More than likely, the connection you pointed out could be the exact LINE-LEVEL outputs he needs to connect to his existing amp. That's my bet.
There is NO need to use an aftermarket in-line SPEAKER-TO-LINE level converter if the Porsche PCCM will provide clean LINE LEVEL output. Converting SPEAKER LEVEL OUTPUT to LINE LEVEL is always risky because it could induce distortion and hum in the audio signal.
I just wish the Porsche PCCM installation manuals were available in pdf form. This would be a big help to others that are attempting to do the same.
I wish that I could help this fellow more, doing electrical work from a distance is very hard.
So, a couple things.
The yellow mini-ISO plug is used in all German cars, VW AUDI BMW Porsche Mercedes and in many other Euro cars. You should be able to get premade harnesses at audio stores.
All modern VW/AUDI radios provide switchable line/speaker level outputs on the brown ISO plug. This has been since the late 90's, perhaps back as far as 1995. To switch between line & speaker you need the VW/AUDI equivalent of Durametric which is VCDS (formerly VagCom).
The 9 wires in the OP's car do not match any Porsche wiring diagram I have.
The regular frunk mounted amp uses a five wire line level connection: four channels plus one common ground. The OP seems to have an eight wire connection: four channels plus individual grounds. There is a higher end amp that uses an eight-wire line level connection.
Just to show that I'm not insane I have attached two different wiring diagrams for different MY2002 996 audio options that include amplifiers in the frunk. Pg13A is the five wire via the yellow mini ISO plug. Pg 13B is the eight wire via the brown "speaker" plug.
Nice! This is a better schematic than I have in my shop manual. We established that he doesn't have the Bose system. Therefore, it's the "Harmann" Becker analog system with the M490 HAES amplifier.
Could you please post a clearer picture of the cable colors? In other words, frame grab a zoomed in image of the left quadrant and then same for the right quadrant. We need to help him line up the colors with what's on the schematic. We definitely don't want him shooting both feet if he choses to take our advice and reconnect the original Porsche YELLOW connector.
After seeing this schematic and the "9 cables" he mentions, makes me wonder if the car had the Porsche CD changer added which would mean the additional GREEN and BLUE connectors.
This. I was trying to help because my car had a poorly installed aftermarket head unit from the previous owner and I know how frustrating it can be to sort that out.
I eventually fixed my own issue but Im afraid Im doing more harm than good here. So, Im going to defer to more knowledgeable people on the thread. I wish the OP good luck - it looks like it will be great once you have it wired up!
I believe I've found what the OP's 9 wires that he's been referring to. They are 4 TWISTED PAIRS and a 12V+ switched line! If you count them (see numbered) you come out at 9 wires.

I assure you none of the included literature in the PCCM+ provides any sort of installation instructions. It doesn't even tell you how to assemble the halo bracket, or even what all the included parts do. I can upload a picture of each page of the booklets, but it would be pointless. They are manuals to guide using the radio and all of its functions, rather than how to install the unit into the car.
Exactly as I stated. The "natural" white multipin plug is your SPEAKER-LEVEL outputs that connects directly to the speakers in the dash, doors, and rear. The BLACK plug should have the 9 wires you located under the dash which originally went to the YELLOW connector that is missing.
Basically, as it stands, you're sending the wrong output from the PCCM to the input of the amp. You should really consider getting a used YELLOW connector on eBay and rewire the cut OEM lines back correctly before proceeding with installing the PCCM+ unit.
Here you go... for just $30.00 here is the correct plug, IMHO. Remember, they made different wiring versions of the YELLOW plug. You need the YELLOW plug that corresponds to the Porsche Harmann analogy HIFI system.
I can't be absolute, but judging from the pictures, the YELLOW plug in this eBay auction appears to have all the 9 lines you need to get your OE system back to stock.
Once you re-wire the replacement YELLOW correctly to the 9 cut wires, then you connect the YELLOW plug to the PCCM. When it's switched to AMP mode, the unit should output LINE LEVEL signals to the amp.

Ok, I've jumped over on Photoshop and created this diagram based on the image you shared. This is the best I can do for you at this point.
Let me know if you have questions.
Wow--thank you! I think this will be really helpful. I see that there are a couple wiring diagrams above, but I am a complete novice when it comes to understanding them. Which of the 9 wires above need to be crimped to the yellow C1 connector? As I recall, there are 6 pinned connection in C1. What do I do with the other 3 wires? Can I keep the red/black spliced into the white wire from the black connector?
Look at the diagram on the lower right. You must match the colors to the correct PIN#. That is your cheat sheet. :-)
In the center illustration, the RED arrows are for the + lines and the green arrows are for the - lines that correspond to the schematic on the left. If you follow the lines in the schematic upwards, you'll notice the corresponding PIN alignment for the YELLOW C1 plug.
It's important to note, that PIN#3 shares ALL negative lines. That means, four lines are sharing the same negative based on the Porsche schematic.
If you get the OEM Yellow C1 PLUG from ebay, all you'll need to do is MATCH colors. Make sense?
Here's the link again...
https://www.ebay.com/itm/97-02-Porsc...53.m1438.l2649
Look closely at the diagram on the lower right. All four lines are connected to PIN#3
No, the RED/BLACK line must be re-connected to PIN#6 on the YELLOW CONNECTOR. I believe that is the REMOTE signal to turn the M490 amplifer on and off with the radio.
Ah ok--I think I totally understand now that I know one pin receives 4 lines (I thought it was 3 shared lines per that diagram). I will have to figure out how to bring 4 wires into 1, but hopefully I can figure it out based on the harness I receive. I should be able to pull a harness tomorrow in person. Luckily, there is a 996/986 dismantler in town that I frequent pretty often. I'll update as soon as I get things crimped and fired up--thank you so much!!
Based on the schematic, there is a in-line junction for PIN#3 to bind all four of the negative lines. I'm not sure at one point in the cable it's located, but usually it's near the connector.
I found the correct yellow C1 connector, snipped the wires that I previously pinned to the brown plug, and un-spliced the black/red wire from the black connector. I then went about splicing the yellow C1 connector making sure that each color wire was being crimped to its matching color. Plugged the C1 connector into its spot in the PCCM+ (it can only be plugged in one slot and in one orientation), turned on the ignition, and... radio silence. Whomp whomp. I, again, have no sound output from the speakers. Made sure PCCM+ is still in Amp mode as well.
I tried troubleshooting a little by un-crimping the black/red wire. With the ignition on, I touched the bare wires of the black/red connector together and could hear a subtle cue from the speakers. Like when you plug a microphone into an amp. But still no sound from the radio or apple carplay.
Any idea where I went wrong? I went from silence, then to scratchy sounds, and now back to silence again from the speakers.
Try putting the black/red wire where it was on the black plug.
If that doesn't work, I can't easily troubleshoot further from a distance.
Do you have a multimeter?
OK, I see one thing to check. Where you have attached all the brown/* wires together, do you have a wire from that junction going to the yellow plug? According to B3's chart it ought to go to pin3 on the yellow plug.
placing the black/red wire back to the white wire resulted in an incredibly high-pitched sound from the speakers. Really loud and terrible sound. Turned the car off immediately upon hearing it.
what do you mean by the brown/* wires? There are 4 wires that junction into one wire (brown/blue) that goes to pin 3.
Hey Man, Don't throw in the towel just yet. I'm having a football dinner at the moment, but I'll try to look at this a little more closely when I have more time. Without factory installation instructions (which are probably reserved for dealerships and authorized installers) we're kind of working blind. There could always be a "hidden" menu that enables LINE-LEVEL output. Just make sure every cable is lined up and connected to the original. Again, gotta run, but I'll look at this later. Cheers!
Question before I leave... did you ever check the amplifier before diving into the project? Did it work correctly with the last stereo? Do you have the original CDR-220?
oh, definitely not ready to give up just yet! Ill do whatever it takes before I break down and go to the dealer. I really appreciate any help I can get. I really thought we had solved it with the C1 connector.
With regard to the Amp: I believe it worked beforehand, but I am not sure. Is it possible the aftermarket head unit I removed bypassed the factory Amp? I do not have access to the factory CDR-220. The car had the aftermarket unit when I purchased it. I can definitely get access to a correct Amp if necessary.
Based on what I've seen in your images, the previous aftermarket Pioneer radio was feeding the amp, but I can't see if anything was bypassed (i.e. cut) because that would take a lot more investigation. But yes, there is a chance the previous system bypassed the amp and used the SPEAKER LEVEL output from the Pioneer to feed the speakers. Usually, you can trace the wires from Pioneer through the firewall into the frunk and that would lead you to anything that was cut before. All speaker wires for the Porsches, that use an amplifier, all meet in the frunk area. Before MOST, the base analog systems fed off the head unit. From what I've seen, the majority of the 996 cars had the upper-end systems with amplifiers.
Do you have a multimeter? If you do, you can check the voltage of each pin on the PCCM+ C1 output. While it's on playing music, you can see if it's output anything at all. This would help rule out a problem with the amp.
That being said, we have a few choices left on the table. Since you confirmed that ALL cables are back to the original and you have a good idea that the frunk HAES amp is working, then here are our options...
1. See if you can find anything in the menu(s) or owner manuals about activating the outputs for PCCM+ C1 connector.
2. You can purchase a wire-harness that takes the HI-LEVEL speaker outputs of B connector on the PCCM+ and converts it to LO-LEVEL or line-level through the YELLOW C1 connector for the HAES amp.
Here is the harness:
https://www.discountcarstereo.com/arh-conti.html
3. Route the speaker level outputs from the PCCM+ from the B connector directly to the car's speakers. This will take a special wiring hardness to output the B connector on the PCCM+ to the white multipin connector at the amp level that feeds the speakers.
4. Last option - make sure ALL connections are connected back to factory original and make an appointment with a Porsche dealership that has trained staff to install the new PCCM+ units. They will more than likely have all the necessary installation documentation to make it happen.
It's my opinion, these PCCM+ units were NOT originally sold for DiY installers. Porsche is very clever in keeping money funneling back to their dealerships (IMHO). And, based on what I learned when they released these units, they intended them to be installed by the dealerships or authorized installers. If that's true, then they will have access to diagnostic equipment to test the units as well as online documentation via Porsche VPN. This information obviously is not available for public digest or we would have already heard about it. I think that the majority of owners are going to be installing them in CAN/MOST bus systems, but from everything I've seen, these units are designed for the analog systems too.
p.s. my frustration is that I don't have any schematics or wiring diagrams/ install instructions on the PCCM+ and with that, this is about the best I can offer you. I wish you all the best!
Let me know if I can assist further.
I do have a multimeter. I have a very rudimentary knowledge base around it, so please forgive me for asking basic questions about it. I imagine that Im looking for voltage as an output, and something less than 12Vcorrect? Should they all have the same output (assuming the Amp is functioning properly)? Just want to make sure I set up the multimeter to the correct settings before making a diagnosis.
With regards to the hi-level/lo-level harness, which radio do I select from the drop down menu in that link? I was looking for CDR-220, but it wasnt an option.
I will do my best searching around the menus, but I think it will be low yield as the real juice is quite well hidden. After all, switching to amp output requires holding down VOLUME for 15secs. Who would guess that?? You are 100% right that Porsche intended these to be installed by the dealer.
Thank you so much for your help! I will get my multimeter out tomorrow and update with results.
I am sure these problems will be sorted, a very interesting post all together. I am very keen to buy the PCMM+ unit for my 996.2 and i look forward to see more pics and details of these units installed in 996s, i want to see what they look like at night etc.
Set the multimeter for AC VOLTS.
Turn on the PCCM+.
Measure the voltage between PIN 3 on the yellow plug and each of the following: PIN 1, 2, 4 and 5, make four measurements. You will have to get creative here as you have insulated all the splices. Sometimes a pin can be used to pierce the insulation to get at the inner conductor.
With the volume all the way up you should read about 0.300 volts AC, which will jump around. That's a line level output signal.
Since the setup does not work, you will almost certainly read 0.000 volts on all four measurements.
Just some guessing here: I do not think the PCCM+ uses the yellow plug. I think it needs to be coded with PIWIS to output line level signals on the brown plug like all modern VW & Audi radios.
Were it I, I would rig the existing wiring to bypass the front amp (it's not very good anyway) and use the speaker level outputs of the PCCM+ to drive the speakers directly.
You're thinking of the system power. This is DC and a "12V system". For example, the power output from the battery to the radio will show around 11 - 13 volts. The voltage coming from a LINE LEVEL audio output will be very low at around 1V.
Therefore, your multimeter should be selected in DC. You're not testing resistance. You're testing voltage.
This company sells adapters for people like you that are changing out Porsche factory radios but want to retain the factory wiring and HAES/Nokia amplifiers. Based on the list, the Continental CD7426UB-OR is the closest in setup to the Becker CDR-220.
You should confirm with the company, but basically (see attached image) the two units are same. The HI/LO harness takes the SPEAKER LEVEL output from the PCCM+ on the B Connector and converts it to LINE-LEVEL through the YELLOW C1 plug to the amplifier.
Again, the best option is to contact your local dealership for assistance to see if you can enable the PCCM+ unit for your car's audio configuration. But if don't and can't figure out how to enable LINE LEVEL output via the Yellow C1 plug, then this is the only option on the table at the moment.
Yep. Based on what I learned with the early press releases and now from you regarding the included manuals, these units are intended to be installed by the dealerships. I'm positive that the dealerships had to pay to train a technician to install these new radios and they would have access to special documentation and equipment to UNLOCK special admin menus.
Please report back what you've been able to accomplish with this challenge.
Watch this video. Notice (at 20-minute mark) that the installer says the installation instructions are only provided by Porsche or independent authorized installers.
You will also note that after he holds down the volume button 10 sec to enable AMP mode, he has to adjust the OUTPUT volume feeding the amplifier. That's important. Did you check that?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmWw...ature=youtu.be
Dusted off the multimeter this morning. With the ignition on, radio playing, and yellow C1 connected to the back of the PCCM unit I then touched the red pin of the multimeter to the exposed wiring of the black/red wire (which is the 12V constant power to the Amp via the yellow C1 connector) and it read about 8V when I touched the black pin to the cars exposed frame.
I have not adjusted that setting, and was wholly unaware of it until now. Will play with that setting when I arrive home later this afternoon and update!
I just watched the video. I noticed when he holds the VOLUME selection down for 10s, he has two options available: CANSwitch and Loudness. However, when I do the same thing I only have one setting to toggle, which is CANSwitch. Why dont I have the other option appearing on my screen? Ill take a picture later today and update.
Ok... sounds good! You'll notice the installer in the video has a bunch of technical papers on his lap too. Bet ya, those are installation instructions he's been given access to from Porsche.
Here is a quick update. As you can see I do NOT have a selection to adjust the loudness of the Amp... Did I miss something during install to be lacking this option? It seems odd to be missing this option.
Look at these two images. Do have a SETTINGS menu (yellow arrow) as shown. Then once in the SETTING menu, have a VOLUME setting (red arrow) as shown in the video starting at 22 min?
When I press the CANSwitch it just toggles from Amp to CAN. The loudness never appears.
Yes, that I how I arrived at the above image I posted. Settings > Volume > hold for 10s. The Loudness option does not appear after holding for 10s. What does appear on my screen is the image I posted above.
I called a bunch of Porsche service departments this morning and a total of ZERO returned my call. However, Suncoast sent me an email containing the holy grailTHE instruction manual. I am attaching it to this post.
Ive read through it, but havent found anything particularly enlightening to my problem re: sound. No one has been able to yet tell me why I dont have the Loudness option after holding down the volume button like it shows on the last page of the manual.
Thank you for updating and posting those instructions. That will help a lot of people. Did you get ANY sound at all? Noise? Or any faint sound from the PCCM?
Ill probably make a separate post just for these instructions. Its practically unobtanium at this point in time, and with Pelican selling these units now people are going to find themselves scratching their heads installing these without instructions.
The only time I was able to get any sound was when I had all those wires pinned to the brown plug. I ordered that harness you linked. Really hoping that provides a solution.
Read Figure 6.5.2 - looks like there may be a grounding issue that needs to be addressed. Even though they specify PCM1 and M680, the grounding issues on the amp's com plug, may apply to your car. At the heart, the PCM1 was an analog system Can't be totally sure from this limited technical document. You'll noticed they include a link to a VPN that includes more instructions and videos.
https://ppn.porsche.com/portal/commu...deos-pccm-plus
But of course, you must have an account to access. Oh well. I bet you more is explained for the analog systems.
As I mentioned before, IMHO the majority of buyers will probably make of the CAN MOST based systems. Why do I think that? The early MOST systems were very problematic and unreliable. Therefore, this is great alternative for those people and it appears that the system is virtually plug and play for MOST customers. The Porsche Becker analog system were pretty solid, but after 2002, Porsche went all digital and problems continued into the 997 generation. I wouldn't be surprised if Porsche doesn't make a 997 and 987 version of the PCCM.
Back to your problem... converting the SPEAKER LEVEL to LINE LEVEL should work. Many people have used those HI/LO adapters when mating a aftermarket stereo to the Factory amps. Hope it works.
I wish I could be more help.
Thank you for the install manual so glad you found it. My 996 is a 2000, not MOST system, but analog. So when taking the PCM out to replace with PCCM+ I am hoping that 996.642.587.00 ground wire to the amp
in pin 17 will do the trick...cause I ain't got sound now, even with the Volume setting CAN to AMP. Again, my system does not have the brown ISO B speakers wires connector from the old PCM 1. will let you know what happens. One would think this cool upgrade by Porsche PCM1 to PCCM+ would be all plug and play! Almost. I will also try to call Porsche but my Porsche service depts up here in New Hampshire are weak. They didn't even know what a PCCM+ is. I will have to call Boston dealers. thanks... for now sitting on a useless $1300 piece of Porsche electronics
There could be rewiring required at the ISO plug. My unit came with two new ISO connectors and pins. Nowhere in the installation documents does it show or mention what the two new ISO connectors are supposed to be used for.
That's definitely a possibility. But without confirmation via a TSB from Porsche, the PCCM+ could or could not output LINE LEVEL from the YELLOW C1 plug as legacy Porsche Becker units. We don't know.
However, it very plausible that the B connector on the PCCM+ is used in both applications - 1. For base analog systems withOUT a frunk amplifier and, 2. For HiFi analog systems that feed a LINE LEVEL signal to the amp. If the default is SPEAKER LEVEL from the B connection, there should be a way in the menu to lower the signal voltage feeding the amp. Unfortunately, if none can be found, the only work-around will be a HI/LO signal conversion through an ISO wire harness/adapter.
yes my kit also came with the brown B and black A connector kits, which I have to believe is just there as an option if needed
to wire the A B connectors directly yourself maybe in another vehicle. meanwhile I'm waiting on my ground wire and hoping
that solves the problem. I may just ground it myself without the porsche official part
Please take pictures of installing this ground wire and report back! Would like to know if this is something I need to do as well.
@b3freak
I received that HI/LO harness today in the mail, but I am pretty sure it is the wrong one. Here is a picture of what I received:
Shouldnt it be more like this one?
I emailed the seller for clarification, as Im sure I chose the wrong option for the harness on their website. Havent heard back yet, though.
https://www.discountcarstereo.com/arh-conti.html
Sorry man. I'm afraid you received the wrong harness. That one looks like the harness for using an aftermarket amplifier. It should look like the second picture with the Yellow C1 plug. Basically, you plug the female black A connector and the female brown B connector from the Hi/Lo harness into the PCCM+ and then, connect the car's female black A connector into the Male A connector on the harness. Next, you connect the male Yellow C1 plug from the harness to the car's Yellow C1 female connector.
As a side note, the ONLY thing different between the one you received and the correct one, is the Yellow plug. Instead of RCA outputs, those connections would feed the lines from the Yellow plug. The ones you spliced back together.
I was afraid of that... Still havent heard back from the customer service dept for that site. Any idea which option I need to get the yellow/black/brown connector trinity? Or do you happen to know of have another site that might carry the correct harness?
Wiring the proper ground to the 18-pin black plug noted in the TSB worked for Paul. He started another thread.
You should really consider doing the same. Although the TSB mentions the PCM1, that system is analog like your CDR-220. It just might work for you.
Thank you so much for leading me to his thread--so glad someone got it to work!
Do you have any experience mounting grounding lines like what is being described in the manual? I've never fitted one before, but I'm confident in my instruction-following abilities. I've looked up the PN for the ground line Porsche lists, but it's weeks out from delivery. Can I buy any generic ground line from an autoparts shop? I'm curious where the ground line goes from pin #17--does it just go directly to the bolt/washer in the Figure 15.5 in the manual?
So I was impatient to wait 8 week delivery of an official Porsche part grounding wire. I dont have a pic of the final result. But let me describe what I did: take off the black 18 pin connector from the amp interface. Then you have to open it up gently which requires sliding off a harness housing small cover. Then the interface with all the pins slides out from the harness. Locate pin 17, next to pin 18 which is actually labeled (you might need to magnify its so small). Take a needle nose plier and grip the base of the red black yellow (arguably green) wire and slightly pull out while at the same time pushing in on the metal end on a little nub which releases the pin from its harness. Now cut that wire giving you about three inches. That was the dsp connector no longer needed. Take another similar guage wire about 10 inches long so that it can reach the grounding post conveniently located about 8 inches from the amp interfaces, and solder or clip securely with the correct guage wire connector to the 3 inch pin wire. Call it Porsche part no. 996.ididitmyselfgroundwire.
now insert the pin back into pin slot 17, put the harness back together, and attach the ground end to the post. Btw I would do all this with the battery disconnected to be safe. And if you have the PCcm unit CAN parameter set to AMP(see instructions in this thread earlier), you should now have sound.
Pin 17 wire of AMP black 18 pin harness connector
Ok, so I am essentially crimping the exposed wiring of the ground line to the cut end of the pin #17 wire, then placing pin #17 back into its home, and then securing the other end of the ground line to the conveniently-located grounding post?
If you're going to re-use the no. 17 black/red/yellow wire coming from the 18-pin connector, then you DON'T need to remove it from the connector to make your ground wire like Paul. Just cut it about 3-4 inches back from the connector. Then, splice another 10-inch piece of wire to the no. 17 black/red/yellow wire coming from the connector.
Once spliced, connect the new no. 17 line to the proper ground point noted in the TSB. Make sense?
Make sure you shield the end of the cut original no.17 cable in the wire bundle.
And so the mystery deepens. I opened the black housing connected to the Amp to find that pin #17 is empty... These are just the 8 speaker wires + 12V wire that I spliced into the yellow C1 connector at the other end of my head unit.
Other than waiting for that correct hi/low harness to arrive I do not know what to do from here. Anyone have suggestions?
Do you have any means to test the amplifier to confirm that it's functioning correctly with clean audio to the speakers? I would hate to think all this work and investigation on the PCCM+ and wiring side is in vane. Seems like others have posted success with integrating the PCCM+ into older analog systems like yours. In the Porsche TSB, they mention that 12V switched is routed via pin#6 on the Yellow C1 plug of the PCCM+ and so that tells me that it has a purpose for these analog systems. But I'm not sure what more I could offer you. Sorry.
Well, I know according to the Porsche TSB that pin 17 was for the DSP. Maybe you don't have a DSP. I would try to ground
that pin 17 slot anyway and see what happens. Worth a try. You might have an extra pin from your PCCM kit?
For the grounding location, did you use the same spot that the battery strap of the negative terminal uses?
Fair point about the DSP. I'll ground it and see what happens. I do still have some pins in the kit. Do you think they will fit into that connector?
Unfortuantely, the pins included in the kit are too large for the Amp connector. They only fit the brown and black connectors at the head unit.
@b3freak
will that Hi/Low level converter bypass the amp? What exactly will this harness do?
No, the Hi/Lo converter doesn't bypass the amplifier in your frunk. It takes the SPEAKER LEVEL output of brown connector B and converts it to LINE LEVEL via the Yellow C1 plug.
Basically, the Hi/Lo converter lowers the voltage of the audio signal to a more acceptable level for a car's amplifier inputs. Most amplifiers need a LINE-LEVEL source; therefore, SPEAKER-LEVEL output is too strong. The results are the audio coming from the speaker will be overdriven producing harmful distortion.
Thank you
@T3C
for starting this thread and
@b3freak
,
@porschebaot
and
@Paul Schuepp
for the posts on this thread - you have helped me tremendously. I'm in the process of installing a PCCM+ in my '00 Boxster S that is OEM equipped with:
CDR-220 Becker head unit
HAES AMP (M490)
DSP (M680)
I wanted to add my finding here as each option puts a slightly different spin on the procedure and details and I've not seen anyone posting with the above OEM configuration.
Although it's fairly obvious, when replacing the radio in a car with the DSP option, you can remove the DSP control panel (mine's a NOKIA). This sort of confused me at first because I was worried about losing my 1 DIN slot storage bin. Just remove the DSP control box and stuff the DSP control header somewhere back in the lower center console.
Since this is an analog car with an analog AMP, you do need to set the CAN/AMP option in the PCCM+ Settings menu (as detailed in posts above). This is confusing in the Porsche Tech Bulletin as it says in step (7) that this is need on '97-'02 vehicles with the PCM1 option.
And, like mentioned above for an AMP car, with the DSP option, you also need to tell the AMP to power up when the new radio turns on by grounding pin 17 on the 18-pin connector at the amp and float the existing wire coming into that pin 17. THE DIFFERENCE in a car with the DSP option, is that wire is not red/black/yellow, it is white/green. @b3freak 's wiring diagram post #54 has this on it (DSP DATA) but this threw me for a bit so I checked the Bentley manual and it confirmed it, and then reread @b3freak 's post.
#3 was even harder for me to figure out as my 18-pin AMP connector shroud is part of the connector, as far as I can tell, and I can't get to the pin latches to remove any pins!
The MOST control unit and connecting line are NOT needed in an analog car like mine with the AMP and DSP option. Leave it out and save yourself a few ounces of sprung weight. :-)
The yellow connector does connect on the top most part of the connector closest to the edge of the unit.
Remaining issue I'm working on (with info from the posts above):
I, too, still have over amplified sound right now. I'll try adjusting the OUTPUT level feeding the AMP or see if, as
@theprf
sayx, there is a way in the radio to switch the output the AMP to LINE LEVEL, or if perhaps the other large connector outputs at LINE LEVEL. If I can't figure that out, I'll buy/make an ISO resistive adapter like @porschebaot mentioned in his install guide.
Guys,
My car is 996 2000 PCM1, Bose Sound System, without fiber optic - fully stock. Everything works perfect before installing PCCM+.
I have read
all your posts and also other topics
regarding PCCM+ and still cannot find answer to one question.
As point 6.5.1 of the Porsche manual is saying about ground the amp we were trying to find the plus with 18 connectors and what comes out:
- I dont have such a plug by the amp
- amp and the plug is in different place than in manual (also CD changer is in other position)
Can anyone help with that?
Moreover
without
grounding the AMP, PCCM+ works almost perfect - the only problem for now is overamplified sound (but I am awaiting for the low/high adapter - for sure its not caused by the lack of grounding).
Thanks, I have read every single post also there
for the moment I will wait for the adapter from Porsche and if everything will works I will leave as it is.
I believe that grounding pin#17 of the HAES amp plug is to disable the M680 DSP function as that is not used with the PCCM+ any longer. If you don't have the M680 DSP option this might already be grounded.
One of my cars has the M490/M680 combo and I would really like to get rid of the M680 DSP option, so I will try the ground pin# 17 solution when I have time.
With the Bose option, it includes a different amplifier - 99664533800. Therefore, those instructions don't apply to you. Did you have the Yellow C1 plug on the back of your legacy PCM1 legacy system? Or, are you using the B connector?
I don't know, all the cables were plug&play. Problem is the white noise ( I am awaiting for the adapter from Porsche) and automatic volume adjustment during acceleration (we will see if anything change after installtion of adapter, but I doubt).
White noise problem is solved - Porsche send us the adapter.
But still 2 topics:
1) automatic volume adjustment (due to increasing speed) doesnt work - anyone? Can anybody confirm here that it works in his car with PCCM+?
2) nav info on cluster - Porsche said that they see only cruisecontrol option - no audio, no nav
Adapter is the same as one showed in first topic regarding PCCM+ installation
Can you please confirm that automatic volume adjustment works with PCCM+?
Are you speaking of the ground line that's noted in the Porsche technical instructions pdf? Or something else?
I can't confirm the automatic volume control will work at the moment.
Was that adapter sold by Porsche? If so, could you please provide the part# for the forum?
That harness adapter in post#32 is basically a Hi/Lo speaker level-to-line level adapter. From the pictures, it appears to serve those with units with the Brown "B" connector to the amplifier. This adapter would not serve people with the Porsche Harmann HiFi analog systems (e.g. CDR-220) where the headunit outputs line-level from the C1 Yellow. That's the way it was on my last 996.
Hey man! Exactly this adapter was send by Porsche Classic or some guys in HQ to my Porsche Center
As I mentioned, I couldnt believe too. It solved overamplification problem (white noise) but I still left with 2 mentioned.
I can confirm that automatic volume adjustment isnt available
nav info on cluster if you didnt have old PCM to begin with you must do the following with either PST2 or PIWIS2:
8.1 Activate PCM2.
8.2 Read out PCM2 fault memory and erase.
8.3 Match the MOST required installed components list to the actual installed components list.
8.4 Code the PCM2 according to vehicle type, versions, country-specific tuner settings and MOST switch.
8.5 Check MOST components.
8.6 Activate navigation in the "instrument cluster" control module system.
8.7 After programming is finished, read out the fault memory of all systems, remedy any existing faults, and erase fault memory.
I would think that you should be good to go. The small yellow plug on the left side of the unit provides data to the instrument cluster. Did you make sure its plugged in? On my car, I originally had just a cdr23 Bose. The PCCM will now update the clock but no Nav data. I am planning to hook up my piwis2 to see if I can get it to work.
UPDATE
I received the correct hi/lo converter and it provided sound to the speakers; however, I got a fair bit of alternator noise. So I put a self-tapping screw into the frame (the crossbeam behind the head unit) and ran a wire to it from the black ground wire. This reduced the noise somewhat, but it wasn't perfect. So what ended up happening is that I sold the carrera and bought a 996 Turbo with 37k miles and a stock Becker head unit. I was able to exclude the PCCM+ from the sale of my carrera so sometime in the near future I'll go about installing it. But, for right now, I'm enjoying the sound of this beautiful flat-six turbo and couldn't care less about the stereo.
Let me get this straight... you couldn't get the PCCM+ radio to work perfectly in your Carrera and so you sold the car, but kept the PCCM+ radio? Wow!
Man, could you give us guys some marital advice?
As it stands right now, the consensus is the PCCM+ does not offer pre-amp analog line-level output via the C1 ISO output. Therefore, the SPEAKER LEVEL output from the B connector on the PCCM+ will have to be attenuated to LINE LEVEL to avoid distortion with the M490 HAES amplifiers. This is for non-MOST analog systems from 99-2002. Bergvill has been producing radio solutions for Porsche for many years.
Here is a Hi/LO adapter/ wire harness for this solution.

I've been following all the drama related to the PCCM+ installation woes in the multiple related threads. I understand that Porsche wants this installed via the Dealer but it seems that even the dealer instructions are inadequate to address the various installation issues noted in the threads. You'd think there would be a more comprehensive installation procedure with Porsche documented instructions for these units and not leave it up to the forums to resolve issues that should have not have been issues to begin with.
exactly! I have a difficult situation. This is my second PCcm install in a 996 after my first successful one. So I think I know what Im doing. Even the first one I had to use rennlist forum to find the no volume solution for grounding pin #17 on the amp. But now I have a new unexpected problem with no help from Porsche so far. The unit is installed and all functions work, with the exception of the unit thinks its moving and will not let you change settings unless you are stationary. But the unit is stationary! So the the built in accelerometer is broken or needs to be reset. Now I have an appointment with a Porsche dealership to process for warranty, realize this dealership never installed a PCcm before. Frustrating!!!
So I just got done (or so I thought) installing the PCCM+ in my 986 (2004). No sound. So do I have to do this grounding thing for the amp as well? I switched from CAN to AMP already.
Has someone successfully used this adapter on the PCCM+ ? I just installed mine on my US, analog car and am battling the hiss / high gain issue. Information on this thread seems a bit all over the place? Is this the recommended adapter (
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/conn...ssthrough-lead
) or the Bergvill one referenced above. Or is Porsche really sending out adapters for people? Has anyone fixed this issue or have any updates since November?
man. What a drag. I think my dealer/repair place is going to try and help me out. He did advise me to try and turn off the radio, get out, lock and unlock the doors, and then try starting the unit again, but that didnt work. Funny story this is actually voice to text dictation coming through the microphone on the unit.
yes I am 99.9 percent sure I did. I remember turning the volume **** and not hearing sound, then I remembered about the CAN/AMP thing. I also tried switching back to CAN just in case.
Just as a follow up here. I reached out to Sunset Porsche where I ordered my PCCM+. They told me they heard from Porsche who has acknowledged the amplifier issue with the analog cars, but do not yet have an official fix. I went ahead and ordered the Bergvill adapter above to see if it would fix my install. Will report back once it comes from Norway or wherever it ships from.
ok, problem solved. Turns out Im an idiot. Theres the orange loop thing that comes in the install kit, and I thought it was to be plugged into the orange cord. I didnt realize that there was a little cap on the port on the MOST box where youre supposed to plug it in.
Yet another situation where actual directions would have helped...
Aside from this tomfoolery, this install was actually quite easy!
To add an additional wrench in this conundrum, I received the BergvillFX adapter that was recommended here for analog cars. Plugged things in and no sound. The adapter had what seemed to be like an extra brown plug. After looking around I've now realized that there are two different analog sound systems with amps. Some cars got a Hayes amp, but my car has a Bose amp. Not to be confused with the digital Bose system? So now I'm going to try this harness from BergvillFX to see if it will work?
https://www.bergvillfx.com/products/...96boxster-bose
Porsche actually used three different brands of amplifiers - Nokia, HAES, and BOSE. They also have different pin configurations for the coupe versus the cabriolet. BOSE is totally different. Crazy aint it?
Has anyone found a wiring diagram for the PCCM+ ? I am in communication with the Bergvill F/X team regarding a harness that might fix the gain issue, but they cannot commit to anything without knowing for sure what the pinout is for the PCCM+.
Did the other adapter ever work for you (
https://www.bergvillfx.com/products/...boxster-bose)?
I have 02 without M490 and wanted to check if that adapter will resolve my PCCM+ high volume gain/hiss issue.
Thanks for the trust guys.
However, we have no harness for use with the PCCM units. We have cooperated with badger15 in this, and tried to find out what is causing the noise. We have no conclusion, the noise/hiss seems to be generated by the head unit itself.
We are unfortunately not able to provide installation help for the PCCM(+) head units, but will refer you to the supplier for such details.
One thing came out of our work and is worth mentioning:
The CAN/AMP setting is for turning on and off the external amplifier Remote ON signal in the socket where the yellow Mini ISO C connector goes. This 12V activation signal output can be turned on like this:
Home/Settings: Press and hold Volume for 10s
Press the CAN switch to change from CAN to AMP
Restart the head unit
Cheers,
Tore
For those of you who are having high volume gain with static/hiss noise issue, the following part worked for me (02 996 TT with CR-220).
https://www.justcarkits.co.uk/jck_bl...em-attenuator/
I ordered it and the package contained two of the CTAMPPASSTHROUGH connector (shown in the picture on the URL above). With 1 of the connectors hooked up to my PCCM+, the volume gain and noise level went down but it was still there. So I ended up connecting both of them and it eliminated the issue completely.
Hope this helps.
Hi
@jh996tt02
I am experiencing a similar issue to you. I purchased a single line converter here in Australia (
https://aerpro.com/app7210
) and it doesnt seem to have addressed the issue.
My questions are as follows:
From your description, it sounds like you have used two of these adaptors in series. Is this correct?
The middle section of your pass-through adaptor seems much more substantial than the one I used. Mine just appears to have some small resistors in the middle. Whereas the middle part of your adaptor looks like it may have some type of PCB with more 'smarts'. Can anyone share the differences between my unit and the unit
@jh996tt02
has used? I wonder if yours drops the voltage as well as providing some type of filtering. Mine just appears to drop the voltage (given it just has a resistor).
I think you are correct that the black shrink-wrapped section in the adapter that I purchased is some sorta low-pass filter that brings down the speaker level signal to line-level. When I connected only one of them, it brought down the gain level noticeably, but it did not eliminate the issue (I was still able to hear a slight hiss-static noise even with the PCCM's volume all the way down) and that's why I put two adapters in a row.
If you look at the installation guide on this post "https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/1194660-installation-guide-of-the-pccm-plus.html", the ISO adapter that's pictured in the thread looks very similar to the one I purchased from
https://www.justcarkits.co.uk/jck_bl...tem-attenuator
.
A quick question if I may as i havent read all the posts here... I am thinking to put in my 03 carrera the pccm+, no bose , no door speakers , pcm2 with cd changer, navi and phone are on from factory. If i go ahead it will be installed at Porsche. Shall i expect to have sound issues with a dealer fit or any other issues ??
IMHO, you have the best system for PCCM+ upgrade. Unless I'm mistaken, you'll lose the use of the CD changer.
Please report back when the dealership finishes. I encourage you to ask if they have been provided detailed instructions from Porsche. From what I gather, they are working with limited install information.
I wonder if running the mini-ISO to ISO converter that you posted above in conjunction with the brown ISO passthrough connector (that Porsche has rumored to supply some with) is the magic combination for my system - 2001 M680 (which is the Nokia DSP Amp) and PCM 1. I think I need to run the brown output from PCCM+ with an in-line filter and convert it to the yellow C1 (which is input to the amp).
Well some progress on trying to eliminate the overly loud and hissing issue. I ordered the mini-ISO hi/low level converter, installed it, and was able to get sound, however the distortion and volume issue persisted. I also ordered the
CTAMPPASSTHROUGH
(brown ISO plug) which others have said successfully removed the hissing, so I added that to the Hi/Low converter and I have NO sound at all. What gives? I un-plug the connector and sound returns.
One odd thing I noticed is that the brown ISO of the Hi/Low seems to be wired opposite of the CTAMP connector with positive/negative switched for each speaker (see below). Would that matter? I de-pinned and swapped them to match, tried again, but still no sound with the CTAMP connector attached.
Continuing on the saga....
Jay @ DiscountCarStereo.com (Provider of the above Hi/Low converter) has been working with me to find a resolution. The original harness had worked to provide sound but did not fix any of the previous issues (hum & loud volume). Jay put together a new harness with a gain adjustment module that attaches to the factory harness through the black ISO and Yellow C1 plug which I installed today. This module fixed the overly loud volume issue so now I can actually go above '5' on my PCCM+'s volume but did not address the hum at Amp power up.
I'm beginning to think this might be a ground related issue? I did have the PCM1 and installed the additional ground wire supplied by Porsche - perhaps that is causing the hum sound? It might make sense as not everyone is reporting that issue.
I will do when I do so ... I must say I have concerns as I read a lot of stuff for the PCCM+ and much of it isnt very good..... I wonder will i still be able to use the phone handset as well? not that i have ever used it but its part of the 996 and dont want to make lots of things obsolete.....
@Landscraper
Were you ever able to get the volume/hum issue sorted out? Do you happen to have a part number for the hi/lo converter? I've been having a heckuva time finding this type of converter in the states and it looks like Discount Car Stereo is one of the only options.
I have been reading through this list and I just installed (myself) the PCCM+ (bought from Suncoast) yesterday and today. The factory Becker was cutting in and out, half working half not. A few days ago it would work for 10 seconds then stop. Once in a while an ear piercing screech lasting a millisecond would occur every 5 minutes or so, but no real sound. So I went through the install and no sound. Yes the CD changer MOST bypass is in place, yes the most box on the tray is connected. I had the thing on for a bit and was talking to a friend when suddenly i had sound. Yeah (didn't touch a thing!) for about 8 seconds then off again. This happened 2 or 3 times over the course of 45 minutes. I am confident that my Factory BOSE amp is kaputz. However I was wondering, before i spend an additional $500 on an amp, if this is a MOST problem or is the consensus that the amp is kaputz? Also my A/C worked perfectly yesterday, but today it says it is on but it really isnt? And when I turn my key one, i get the usual oil measurement and i have the computer for mph, outside air, yadda yadda yadda BUT now the steering column lever to control that does nothing. And the head unit does not turn off with the key. Help, anyone!!!
So i dropped by my local porsche repair shop today and he had a Bose amp with Most. Took 2 minutes and swapped them out and had to switch the head unit back to CAN then back to AMP and now all works. Except the typical it always thinks i am moving. Also it doesn't shut off with the key. I manually turn it on and off each time. Even without key i can turn it on. We tested a new ignition switch, that isn't it.
And suddenly my A/C doesn't work, my cruise control doesnt work, and I have the computer where i can select my dash display and cancel the oil measure and that doesn't work. As well as the top in motion light... I am going to disconnect the instrument cluster and reattach as well as the A/C controller (that worked saturday night) and see if that clears it. If not, my cousin has the durametric shop version and we will hook it up and see what we can see.
Hi All!
I just/almost completed installation of the PCCM+ in my 2004.5 996 911 with MOST and CDR23.
I hit a snag with the no sound issue. I have read through all the manuals and forums I could find but none with my exact issue.
Has anyone experienced issues accessing the hidden volume settings? I am able to access every other setting, no in-motion issues as others have had. I use the right side **** to scroll down to "Volume" then hold with my finger on the volume button. Have held for over a minute with no change. Is this the correct procedure or am I missing a step? I have tested with the yellow plug connected and disconnected. No change in behavior.
Additionally, looking through this thread it seems to me that something may be off about my unit. When looking at the version information my AP and OS seem to be different than any other examples I have seen posted.
Any input is appreciated!!
And to update. The new amp got the system working. But i then had dash control, cruise control issues and no A/C. After disconnecting the guage cluster and reconnecting everything worked except the A/C. My cousin has a durametric (sp?) and we reset the controller and now everything works. I also left off that the stereo did not turn off with the key. So after switching it back to CAN in the hidden volume menu, it now turns off with the key. Wish the downloadable le directions for install said to
do that!!!!!
fresh in my mind as i did this 2 weeks ago! When you hold down the volume button it should get a ghost image going with it. If not, back out and try again. When you see the ghost image then hold until the warning screen comes up. Mine is usaully around 10 to 12 seconds. Then switch to amp and you should get sound, unless your amp was bad like mine was. When in amop, my 2003 986S would not turn off via the key. I had to go back in again and switch back to CAN and now all works perfectly.
Did your factory amp crap out after installing the PCCM? I installed it in my 03 and shortly after the audio started going in/out randomly. I had my factory amp rebuilt and that fixed the issue so I'm curious if others are seeing these PCCM units frying their old amps.
No my factory unit was working/not working/working for a while. It is what prompted me to change to this head unit. My factory Becker was flashing in and out and non responsive to commands. When i added the pccm+ i still had no sound and went to my local porsche repair shop, grabbed a bose amp with most off the shelf and hooked it up. After switching back to CAN then AMP i finally had sound. Pretty sure that means the amp was always my problem. In fact i paid for the amp by giving them the becker head unit. Later that week it was installed into a project 986 they have and it worked perfectly. I n all honesty, I wish the BOSE amp had more power though! I was driving down the highway at 80mph yesterday and ended up turning the stereo off as it couldn't overcome the wind noise. Around town and with top up it is plenty, but at highway speed with top down, well lets just say the flat 6 makes the music for me and makes me smile, cause the stereo isn't. Other than that, i have no complaints about this pccm+ head unit or my BOSE system.
Agree, I do wish it had a little more power, I have a coupe but windows down I had the volume maxed out on the highway recently. Do you know if we can swap out speakers without changing the amp? I was wondering if that would help improve audio quality at all.
I did see a you tube video of someone changing out speakers (using factory covers/mounts) so it can be done. A little soldering involved, not horrible.
Hoping someone will have additional insight on what may be causing the issue with accessing the hidden volume menu. We have checked all connections are properly inserted and in the correct location. Have also tested with the stock radio to confirm the rest of the system works.
We are still unable to access the hidden volume menu after trying many times and variations of holding and highlighting with the scroll ****.
My neighbor had this unit that he bought but ended up selling his 996 before installing it, so it is a new system. I am hoping someone could confirm that the version information should work for my North American 996 or could share if they have similar version info?
Additionally, If anyone has an idea of who to contact for warranty work on this as my local dealers have been unhelpful in any warranty information.
Thank you!
I have newer versions on my PCCM+ unit and I am able to access the hidden volume menu.
AP: APP 20200807 09:34
OS: 25.0.0.6.1.0.1.1
you mentioned using the **** to try and access the volume menu, have you instead tried placing your finger over the “Volume” menu item and holding on it for ~10 seconds? That is how I access it.
Thanks for confirming the version info. Seems like mine is outdated, maybe there is a different location for the volume hidden menu.
I did try holding my finger on it multiple times now. The odd thing is that I can access all other hidden menus by holding my finger on Version Info or Factory Reset. Just not the volume menu, which I believe the settings in there will fix my no sound issue.
Going to contact more Porsche dealers to see if a software update is available.
I did a self-install of this on my new (to me) C4S last week. Apart from the usual fun of fishing cables to/from the A pillar, the installation was pretty straightforward.
I have one issue post-install and that is I get a random, audible "beep" whenever the unit is in use. It doesn't matter what source is playing, but its driving me mad!
I've checked that everything is connected to the right place and every function is working ok, so I'm a bit at a loss. Has anybody else had this issue?
Thanks!
I almost have mine installed in my 99. What is this wire? Guessing a ground but want to make sure. Coming from the cigarette lighter harness on passenger side.
Yes. This grounding wire would have connected to the metal frame for the PCM unit - there's a small black rectangle with metal prongs on it.
Just cover the end in electrical tape and tuck it off to the side. If you don't do this, you'll get a couple of beeps on the horn when you lock the car as its linked to the alarm.
Sorry to hijack this thread, but Im looking for advice on installing the PCCM+ in my 2003 C4S. Is this adapter what I need to connect the PCCCM+ directly to the speakers? My car has aftermarket speakers and no amp. Is it possible to connect the PCCM+ directly to the speakers? My car came with the Bose in dash CD player with the Bose fiber optic amp, but that no longer is in the car.
Thank you.
I don't know what adapter you are talking about, but yes - it should be possible to connect your speakers directly to the PCCM+ using a standard connector (usually a red rectangular connector)
Thanks for the response! I've been told that the PCCM+ has no (or very little) power and that connecting it directly to the speakers would result in low or no sound. Can you confirm this? Also, if you know of the proper adapter to allow for direct speaker connection, please let me know as I've searched and cannot find any info on this. When I asked Porsche, they said (not unexpectedly) that they recommend that I take this to an authorized dealer for the install and not attempt it on my own.
That hasnt been my experience. I installed a PCCM+ in my GT3, which relies on head-unit amplification from factory (headunit to speakers, no external amp). Ive found it slightly over amplified; there is slightly audible white noise when he unit is on. There is a hidden menu to configure the headunit for MOST or analogue amplification, its possible you have that set incorrectly.
Thanks for this info. I was told it "required" an amp. I'm trying to use it with the Bose amp that came with my car, but if that fails, I will try the direct to speakers method. For the direct to speakers connection, was there a factory connector that just plugged directly into the PCCM+ unit, or did you buy an adapter and if so, which one did you get?
Thanks!
And now its my turn to have issues after 5 succesful PCCM installations in 996/986 and a few 997s (never had any issues whatsoever before today, still love the product!):
Im having the no-sound problem with my 2004 986 S with BOSE and MOST (no CD-changer) after converting from a CDR 23.
No sound, re-did all the connections, replaced MOST-module on PCCM with another one i had from a previous install, plugged the old CDR23 back in to double-check (worked flawless), got some sound at some point for 3 seconds followed by silence again.
Starting to think that the PCCM might be faulty Any suggestions on this?
Sounds like faulty PCCM to me. Unless maybe the amp is going out and you're just getting really unlucky with the timing of it going in/out...which I doubt is the case.
UPDATE:
Problem solved!
Turns out that neither of the PCCMs was faulty, nor was my installation! The early BOSE Amps (Part no. 996 645 333 02/ 996 645 333 03) have an older software that doesnt communicate with the PCCM+ Most-control unit.
There are two possible solutions to this problem:
Buy a new BOSE Amp at the dealer: 1.084,49€
or...
Send the old BOSE-Amp to
AMP Performance
Klick me!
and have them update the software of the Amp for 196,35€!
I did just that and everything works as it should now! :-) After contacting Mr. Gomille via e-Mail he reached out to me within 10 Minutes to discuss the issue. After explaining everything ive done so far to locate the problem he mentioned that he once had a similar case where the update of the software worked. We decided to go that route so i removed the Amp and sent it in. It took him about a week to get it done (I didnt bother since he informed me beforehand that theyre busy atm) and when I got it back today it worked from the moment it was plugged in!
Very happy with the outcome! Extremely satisfied customer here! :-)
Go check them out if you run into similar issues!
After testing out three different PCCMs (from different production dates as well) it became kinda obvious that the Amp had to somehow be the troublemaker.
I then started searching around for options to get someone to check and potentially repair it (since it was still working perfectly fine with the CDR) and, to be brutally honest, I just got lucky to find that one repair place straight away that knows their stuff well enough to figure out that the software had to be an issue.
We had a detailed conversation on the phone figuring out possible problems and solutions and it was Mr. Gomilles idea to give that a try! All credit to him! 🙂👍
Hi to all that have contributed already in this great thread! It gave me a better understanding of the issue I have with my PCCM.
I have a similar riddle to solve as the tread starter and all help is appreciated. Maybe you have some insight to share?
See my post on the PCCM installation guide
Guys,
Can you PLEASE help me? I'm now $500+ in wasted labor, and can't install my PCCM+. I've scoured every forum.
I have a 2002 Cabriolet with BOSE Audio, NON-MOST. It's THIS diagram for the wiring.
Got my PCCM+ and got the error where it won't allow me into the settings menu since it thinks I'm in motion.
Tried every which way of connecting the unit, can't get into the menu.
Local Porsche dealer has no clue. 2 local installers failed to figure out how to get in.
Suncoast told me to ground Pin 18 for the DSP. Aside from reading everywhere else that it's pin 17, I told Suncoast (who I bought PCCM+ from) that I don't have a DSP..... My Bose Amp only has 8 pins.
So, now I'm in the hole on labor with no prospects of fixing this error. I never saw any resolution from others with this error other than dead threads or "it fixed itself."
Is the issue my hardware? This suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.
Hi All,
Sorry to revive an old thread, but here goes nothin’! I'm having issues installing the PCCM into my
2002 996 C4S Bose without MOST
. To my knowledge, the car’s audio was previously unmodified. I recently replaced the frunk AMP with another used OEM module – it was working prior to PCCM install commencement.
The unit was purchased from Suncoast Parts with the additional non-MOST adapter (yellow blue green into red female, smaller yellow male plugged into PCCM unit). I did not get the GPS chip but did install the antenna.
I have all the wiring hooked up per many of the DIY vidoes and threads (antenna, mic, USB/Aux unit, etc) doing my best to follow directions clearly. Switched from CAN to AMP and rebooted (unplugged and replugged power cable in unit). The unit powers on and seems to function as intended (Radio, Apple CarPlay, settings, etc.) but makes no sound. I’ve attached images below of where I’m stuck.
Is there anything to be done in the frunk? Anything I need to do with the fiber optic or “S-Video” looking cable in last image?
Any help would be greatly appreciated so I don’t need to drive around with a half disassembled interior for too long!
Side note: I get the “Vehicle in motion” setting menu restriction unpredictably/intermittently when stationary, but I am often able to get past it. I was able to get into the hidden the “Factory Reset” menu but there was no place to turn off the NHTSA. That is a secondary issue.
Did you order the genuine Porsche adapter for non-most cars or is the adapter you ordered aftermarket?
Here is the link to the correct part:
https://www.sunsetporscheparts.com/o...er-99664234100
Here's what it should look like...
Read through this thread.
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...pgrades-5.html
Thanks for reviving that snippet from prior thread - I've been doing my homework trying to save others the trouble.
That's exactly the adapter I have (same part number/OEM), but seems like there may be more to it. Note, my car had the Becker CDR-220 system without any prior 2-DIN system.
See below doc I put together. Any issues with my connections? Does female connector I called as #3 need to connect anywhere?
I am yet another user reviving this thread. I have read through and I don't seem to find anyone that has had the exact issue that I have had. I lost sound after having it for a couple of weeks. I first will apologize that I am probably the most uneducated Porsche owner. After I had been working with 3 patients as a hospice nurse and contracted a severe case of COVID and survived and made it to my 50th birthday My Bride supported me getting a 2004 Boxster S Special Edition. Which I got because one of the parents of her students from years ago has made a career out of refurbishing Porsches.
my Porsche had a lot of miles on it and a Becker radio with Cd player that cut out a lot. I finally pulled the trigger and purchased the PCCM+ from Suncoast in September and just had it installed by a local Porsche shop (not a dealer) I also added the rear speakers. When I left with the car 3 weeks ago everything worked great except I was getting the front dash speakers were crackling on and off. It was not constant but it was there so I just faded to the back speakers and was looking at installing the Bose speakers in the dash thinking that maybe the system is now to powerful for the Hifi replacement speakers I also purchased from Suncoast. I had the CDR23 system non Bose I do not believe it was fiber optic. Today I went to get my daughter from school and out of the blue I have no sound. the system is on no sound. This is after several outings with sound and what I would call good sound. I tried adjusting settings in the sound app. and it froze up when I tried to adjust the fade so I then did a factory reset. I still have no sound.
It sounds like you all have the answers I apologize I don't know what you mean by MOST. I also saw someone had installed a system back in January and they added an antenna. I don't know if I have that option as ai said I paid to have it installed as it was over my head. I know I could reach out to the shop that installed but I have already gone over my budget and when I left there it was working. If it is something I can easily fix then I will. If I need a new amp I am ok with that . It does not have to be a factory amp. this special edition has not been kept stock. I just want the system to work and I am concerned I have messed it up. I di don't get the maps although I am thinking of purchasing them for the extra $140. I did purchase Bose speakers for th dash off of eBay but stupid me was not thinking the would be out of a 2002-2004. I thought I was getting a deal on were used speakers. Not sure it is worth replacing or if my front speaker issue is related to the amp or the wiring.
Any help you can give this novice Porsche owner would be greatly appreciated. I hope I did this correct as I have never submitted a post in my life.lol!
We need to know if the original factory installed system in your car is using MOST (digital via fiber optics) or a base system that is analog. Do you have door speakers? rear? The majority of the post-02 Boxsters running the CDR-23 would have been MOST. No sound is usually a bad amplifier. The crackling sound is a common PCCM+ problem. For reasons no one really knows, the analog sound output is overdriven even when dialed down in the PCCM+ menu. That means you have a high noise floor that is audible. Every radio has a measurable signal-to-noise ratio. If the sound is overdriven it affects you volume ramping and you hear noise and popping.
Thank you for your reply, How do I find if it is using MOST? Any guidance would be appreciated.
I had dashboard an door speakers
I just added the rear speaker system when I had the PCCM+ system installed 3 weeks ago. My rear system is the aftermarket system that sun coast sells it uses Panasonic speakers.
After I sent my original post I went back out and started the car to run some errands and the radio worked th whole time. I even went through and set 10 FM presets and connected my phone and listened to an audio book. I stopped and started the car 4 times and it had no problems at all. If that helps. At this point I am not sure if it was just a tech glitch or I do have a loose wire or the amp needs to be replaced as it is faulty. If I choose to replace the amp are there recommendations?
Zuffen Zeus, you had talked about analog sound and it being over driven. does this have anything to do with the Loudness setting on the PCCM+. when it is off the sound is tinny and lacks fullness but if I turn Loudness on anything higher then a 3-5 will blast me out of the car. Is that what you mean by being overdriven?
The 2003+ Boxsters (as well as 996s) use the CDR-23 as the regular radio, which all use MOST. On the back of the radio, youd find a small rectangular plug with two orange wires - the fiber optic cables. Thats what connects to the amplifier in the frunk (also how the CD changer connects).
Typically the 04 550 Anniversary all came with Bose audio - check the label under the frunk lid. Would be option 680.
I'm at this spot and just opened mine up. I do not appear to have a 17 wire. One side is labeled 1 -> 9, the other 10 -> 18. I'll assume I should be on the 10-18 side, but as you can see, there is nothing past 15.
I suppose I could go by color, but the ramifications of cutting the wrong wire seem...big.
Has anyone else seen this? Going into a bone stock Nokia M490 on a 1999 996 cabriolet.
Hello Fine Folks of a Grande Olde Thread!
I was also experiencing no sound from my newly installed PCCM+ in an '01 996 Cab. This 996 came with a Becker tape deck unit, a Harman amplifier, and a Porsche branded CD changer in the frunk. It does not have MOST but does have Bose analog. I do
not
have a 662 PCM1 unit so the grounding of pin 17/18 instructed in a TSB does not apply as that is only needed with a PCM1
and
the Harmann amp
.
It includes the following audio related (I think) option codes:
322: Radio “Porsche CR 220”
441: Prepared for radio
490: -MY 01 sound system MY02 sound system Harmanm analog
659: on-board computer (who knows?)
680: -MY 01 digital sound package MY 02- sound system Bose analog 692: CD autochanger “Porsche”
The car has the yellow, blue, green combination plug and that is plugged into the largest slot on the rear of the PCCM+ unit. The black plug carrying power is connected to the PCCM+ in the appropriate socket. I am certain that is power as removing it results in the unit not turning on entirely. I also have the GPS, USB box, antenna (via the included dongle), and microphone connected. I didn't bother installing the MOST box.
Quick Sidebar: Initially I was unable to access settings due to the car in motion error. That was caused by having the white microphone jack connected to the incorrect port on the PCCM+. Dumb error, but easy enough to make when you don't have a good sight line to what you are doing and you get an audible click even when connecting to the wrong port. The correct port is the small white bottom most port. If you connect it to the top small white port you will have the car in motion error.
Incorrect port for microphone. This will cause the car in motion error.
Other Sidebar: I struggled mightily to fully seat the blue GPS connection. It turned out this connector certainly didn't receive Porsche's vaunted Kontrollierte Qualitat before leaving the factory. Inside the barrel was a stray metal 'finger' that needed to be pushed out to the edge to allow the connector to fully seat.
996 PCCM Plus Defective Blue GPS Connector
After installing the PCCM+ and powering it on I accessed the 'hidden' menu by holding on volume for 10 seconds and changed the setting from Can to AMP. The unit powers on as expected but I have no sound at any volume level. I tried the tuner and audio via CarPlay. That prompted me to disconnect the batter and then disconnect and reconnect every connection. I also tried the factory reset to no avail. I came back to this forum for the thousandth time and swore a little.
The Breakthrough: After confirming the unit was at least trying to send something to the amp, it occurred to me the amp might need some marching orders beyond whatever the yellow connector is telling it. Upon re-connecting the old Nokia DSP equalizer I had removed from the center console I instantly had sound. I had figured the new PCCM+ would take care of EQ duties and those options are certainly there. But in this setup the Harmann amp wants permission, or whatever, from the old DSP unit. The unit also retains its functionality in that it does indeed change the sound profile. I am hearing a slight white noise/hiss at very low volumes.
Has anyone figured out a way to trick the amp to think the DSP controller is connected? It would be great to eliminate it as if I need a slot/DIN to install it above the HVAC controls I'll lose the shelf. It's a pretty useless little shelf as far as holding things is concerned, but it's my pretty useless little shelf and I'd like to retain the excitement of it throwing things at me while cornering. Related or additionally, has anyone successfully conquered the white noise? I've heard people suggesting Porsche adapter
996-642-341-00
, but am not sure if that is applicable to my setup.
