It's amazing that the glass on my 996 was about $800 to replace and is "just" a piece of glass while the glass on my Escalade (yes broken windshield in the first 6 mos of ownership) with rain sensor bracket, etc, ran $200 installed!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm looking over the rules for DE events and it was mentioned that the windshield needs inspected for cracks and delaminations. My windshield has a small crack in the very bottom corner on the passenger side, about an 1" up and about an 1" long going from the side to the bottom (it makes a triangle in the corner). I guess I have to get a new windshield? Anyone have experience with this? I'm a bit nervous getting "Joe's auto Glass" or the like to do this, and I'll bet it's quite pricey from the dealership. Mitch

POST 2Original post

There are some great glass repair places that can be found locally via your yellow pages. Most will even go to your place of work or where the car is located. Casually though It does not sound like your windshild can be fixed - they need an area where that they apply suction around the crack.

POST 3Original post

Mitch, having had to replace a windshield or two in my days be prepared for the sticker shock. If you want OEM glass, be prepared to spend between 750-1000 depending on dealer. It's amazing that the glass on my 996 was about $800 to replace and is "just" a piece of glass while the glass on my Escalade (yes broken windshield in the first 6 mos of ownership) with rain sensor bracket, etc, ran $200 installed! If you can repair that is the cheaper way to go.

POST 4Original post

Whichever way you go call CDOC and get tear offs for your windshield. The work for the track and offer some protection.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's kind of what I figured, Porsche super-premium price..... I live in KY, which is a "zero deductable" auto glass state. Not sure if this small crack in the corner will qualify , or if I can use the dealer (which I would prefer) to have it replaced. But- I can't get into a DE with any kind of crack, correct? If so, I better get moving.......

POST 6Original post

I learned the hard way as my old state was zero ded glass but here in NC it goes against comprehensive which I have a $500 ded. So, I recently changed my ded to $0 and it raised my rates minimally and if I have 1 glass replacement every 5 years I will come out ahead. If the crack is small, you won't be DQ'd from the DE. Can you post a picture? As far as the tear-offs, I have them installed on my car but then again it is a track only car. The tear-offs will sure help save the windshield though.

POST 8Original post

That shouldn't have any trouble passing tech, I wouldn't worry about it. Ahmet

POST 9Original post

I passed tech with a 14" crack along the bottom of my windshield on the driver's side. Your mileage may vary; call and ask the people hosting the event.

POST 10Original post

The crack you have would be very unlikely to have you excluded from any DE. It is neither in your vision, nor about to get in your vision, so in Northeast Region at least we wouldn't even give it a thought.

POST 11Original post

I am the Track Tech Chair for my PCA Club. I would pass your car for a DE event.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, that's very good to know. Thought I was going to have to run and get a new one pretty quick. I'm still going to check into getting it replaced through insurance!
