Although, to be fair, it only did it twice on a 15 minute drive whereas the ESR CryoBoost charger disconnected like 30 times on the same drive.

And here is the installed ESR QI2 Cryoboost (minus power cable).
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Need to get that fixed, and weed out the number of options.
I've had a number of projects in the works over the winter. Given the chatter lately regarding phone and other device/display mounts, I figure it's probably time to reveal my hazard trim phone mount. This design is compatible with Quadlock products (
https://www.quadlockcase.com/
), but I can make other versions if guys want to make some suggestions. Don't mind the current color. It'll be black in future prints now that I have my resin mixture sorted out. Final version will have metal threads rather than the tapped plastic (even though the tapped plastic has held up well in the mount I designed for my 4Runner). Love to hear everyone's thoughts.
Original and 3D printed trim with mounting base.
Installed in instrument cluster binnacle.
Another view of the mount base.
With Quadlock head and single pivot attachment.
Phone in landscape view is at the same level as the instrument cluster.
Portrait view does block one of the air vents.
Wow. That is great!! What a solution for the single DINN radio/GT3 console delete folks.
How robust is that area of the dash, as far as supporting the weight of a phone?
Thanks for all the positive comments so far!
Carbon fiber could be tough with all the detailed features. An overlay might be possibility.
Its a pretty robust area for a phone. Anyone who has removed the trim for instrument cluster or dash work should have a pretty good idea. The trim is supported all along the outside by the binnacle, on the inside by the actual hazard switch, and secured with two clamps. I thought about also using the the screw that secures the binnacle to dash for additional support, but that doesn't seem necessary. One of the bigger challenges was getting the material flexible enough so that it could be removed without damage.
I'm initially thinking somewhere around $40 depending on interest, but I still need to figure out my cost (and time) per piece. It'd be wonderful if there's enough interest to justify injection mold tooling.
For the guys using Magsafe mounts, are there any particular go-to mounts on the market that an adapter or a particular size ball mount that would be preferred?
I am very interested in a magsafe option. I am currently using this mount from amazon that uses what seems to be a pretty generic ball mount. ~$40 seems like a very reasonable price so if you do manage to create a ball mount version you got my order.

great work, that looks like a brilliant solution for a phone mount, as all the other options I've seen are much lower down & outside line of sight.
re: magsafe & ballmounts
Both of the following ESR items can be attached to the ball from a rennline exact fit mount (
Porsche 996/986 ExactFit Magnetic Phone Mount | Rennline
) So you might want to consider using the same sized ball mount for yours.

FWIW I've used both of these ESR items in different cars & they comfortably handle the weight of an iphone13 pro.
Love this and something I've been thinking about. I like your execution a lot and I think the placement is perfect. I currently have the Rennline mount which works fine but places the phone way too low causing you to take your eyes off the road. With phones being bigger and bigger I also find that a passanger often knocks it off. This solution solves both! Well done! It would be awesome if you could transfer the magnet from a rennline mount along with it's ball and install onto your piece. That would be a clean solution.
Thanks for all the info on the Magsafe mounts. Rennline currently offers one as well:
https://www.rennline.com/Wireless-In...ductinfo/PM70/
If someone could provide the ball diameter and screw thread size, I'll have an adapter whipped up in no time.
I have the exact same mount, and I concur with you. Id definitely buy a hazard mount that works with MagSafe. I dont want to get the quad lock proprietary case.
What would also be nice is a discreet hole that could be used to route a cable through it for MagSafe wireless charging mounts. Then we can hook up the wiring behind the dash for a clean install.
So the Rennline ball mount is 17mm. Please let me know if any of these other magsafe mounts need a different diameter. If my girls give me any free time at home tonight, I'll show off that version in the morning.
Thanks. Switched to a headless Bluetooth system. I'll share those details in its own post, but that's what sparked the inspiration behind this mount.
Ball mount is on the printer now.
17mm ball mount with USB-C cable pass through is complete (with the exception of an outer edge filet that I forgot on this version). The ball/extension is reinforced with an M5 screw.
I'll be traveling for the next couple weeks. In that time I'll order a couple Magsafe mounts so I can confirm fitment and more print material.
This is great!
I am in for a ball mount.
My preferred mount uses a slightly smaller ball, but I am guessing it may work with this ball. One other thing you might consider before production, what if you had a common trim mount, then different attachments based on what one's preferred mounting is? That would give you a two-part but much more adaptable product. Just an idea.
Definitely considering the options via adapter route. That was actually what I did for my first design on the 17mm ball mount (see below). Doesn't look as clean unfortunately. My plan (and I want to hear feedback on this) is to offer a few different options that are all 3D printed but application specific. If volume ever justifies switching to injection molding parts, I'd offer a free replacement to all prior purchasers.
Personally I don't mind either option as it will normally be hidden behind the actual mount anyway. Ultimately I think the price will be the tiebreaker if I was to vote on one option over another. That's my 2 cents.
One more tweak you may want to consider: if the section with the mount could be extended further to the right, to make the whole thing more of an egg shape, then the mounted phone would be in a more offset position. This could give greater access to the hazard light button. If the gap between steering wheel & phone is a little larger this may also be a better position for the phone.
FWIW I'd consider one, if you could make them in a darker black finish & suitable for a RHD (UK) car.
Late to the discussion again. Looks fantastic. I haven't bought a mount yet because none seem to put the phone in a decent spot. I don't like sticking stuff to the dash, so those are out. Count me in, one of each type!
Good question. It takes less than a minute to make the swap. Step 1: Turn on the flashers. This reveals cutouts on the left and right sides of the switch button. Step 2: use a small screwdriver to pop off the hazard switch. Step 3: pry out the hazard trim (using standard trim removal tools or a larger screwdriver with the tip covered in electrical tape.
I'll add a video of the swap when I get back home.
Thanks!!!! I look forward to it. Some things I can just make a real mess of, lol and I'd hate to go sideways on something this easy, hahhahahahahahaa (trust me, I can screw things up real good).
Received some magsafe mounts to test this week. The ESR and Rennline products both need a 17mm ball mount. ESR definitely has the stronger magnets. Rennline is more compact. Both seem like solid options. The Spiegel mount has the USB-C plug on the backside so it potentially could have been an even cleaner look. It uses a 15mm ball mount (no issue adding another version), but unfortunately doesn't offer a way to tighten by hand. Just from some in-kitchen vibration testing I can see the phone tilting down during normal driving conditions with that mount. Going make a couple design tweaks this week, and I'll try to have a cable routed thru the dash next test fitment.
Clockwise from bottom: ESR, Rennline, and Spiegel

ESR mounted
I bought the ESR windshield mounted one ~2 weeks ago. It apparently is the strongest magnet currently available. That being said, it certainly seems bulky for the 996 and the blue charging light is not as discrete as I'd like it to be in the 996 interior. Love having it in my Tahoe though.
Yeah the ESR is ridiculously strong. I was using the adhesive metal ring included with the Rennline Kit to make my Pixel 6 compatible, and had to add a layer a tape over the back of my phone to keep the ring attached to the phone. Planning to get a thick case to use with a buddy's iPhone for another test, and I have a magsafe case for my Pixel from Moment on backorder. If I ultimately make the switch to magsafe, the ESR will be going in my 4Runner.
Thanks. Both the Rennline and ESR clear the vents in portrait mode. Actually thought about going a few mms tighter to the dash, but that would have made it more difficult for getting fingers behind it when tightening everything up.
Out of curiosity, have you tried the apple mag safe charger? I would assume the OEM would have the "best" retention. RAM mount offers this; they didn't try to compete with a charger, so maybe Apple is the best?
https://www.rammount.com/part/RAP-B-202-AP-MAGU
Another observation I noted with a coworker. My 12 pro "sticks" a lot better to the ESR than his 13 pro. We're both using an apple mag safe leather case; tried with and without the case. Not sure if this difference is noticeable between phone models vs phone to phone.
Yeah, I've been working on a B mount version. Was actually trying to integrate a ball receptacle (i.e. half of the short arm) into the hazard trim, but that has been a challenge. Just ordered an Apple magsafe charger and a couple RAM products.
Can't wait to see what you come up with! Also keeping an eye out for your headless stereo install; sounds like optimal set up for running a the gt3 console delete.
I have the original (square) ESR in another car, but the HaloLock "Shift" version of the ESR mount, has a less bulky look & works well in my 996.

Thanks again to the OP for designing & iterating on this. If a right hand drive version for the UK market becomes available, I'd be interested.
Sorry for the lack of updates. Managed to squeeze in my (first and preferably only) wedding a couple weekends ago. Made a B mount version, and tested it out with an actual Apple magsafe charger. I'd say it's comparable to the Rennline charger strength wise. Now that test is still using the Rennline provided metal circle on the back of my non-iphone. I do have a magsafe phone case showing up this week. The RAM 2" arm adds some nice flexibility for position. Also planning to make it up to Thompson this Saturday, and get some hands on feedback from the guys there.
So had the pleasure this past Saturday to get in some track testing and a ride along with
@De Jeeper
in his GT3ish. The (awesome) experience brought up the question of how is the mount affected by broken or degraded spring clips. We discussed it, and figured it would be a good idea to include new springs with each mount. After a little more thought I decided to eliminate the need for the spring clips all together, and revised my design to instead use the screw holding the instrument cluster binnacle to the dashboard. The new design is now two parts (base and insert).
Pros:
- No deflection/displacement under load.
- Easy to remove (and eliminates any risk of damage to the mount) if needing to access/remove the instrument cluster and binnacle.
- Ability to easily swap inserts if needing the change to a different mount type (say from a B mount used with an AIM device to a 17mm Magsafe charging device).
Cons:
- Additional tools needed for install (2mm Allen key and a Torx driver), but looking to include those.
- Additional time and material to produce on my end due to the two piece design.
I'm really happy with the new design. Still have three mount types (Quad Lock, 17mm ball, and RAM B) both with and without a cut out for a USB cable. Currently printing parts in an attempt to build up a little inventory, and putting the finishing touches a website to handle order placement. Shooting to go live with that sometime this weekend. I'll add step-by-step install instructions with pictures.
Awesome, I'm ready to order!
Make sure you put in a place for "additional information" on your order page.
That way I can tell you, "don't send the tools!"
I have plenty of Torx and hex sockets/bits.
That way you can save yourself some money.
Wow. I kept seeing this thread being advanced but it took me THIS long to actually click into it. I'm in for whichever one is like the Rennline mount. I predict you'll sell a lot of these.
FYI for anyone who buys one of these and wants it to match their Savanna interior -
This stuff is a perfect match to the factory interior:
https://www.colorbondpaint.com/produ...3¤cy=USD
Give me another day. Got a couple dozen of various styles ready to go. Getting all the other ducks in row. In the meantime, I'll share the installation instructions.
Install requires a few fairly common tools, and only takes a few minutes...
Tools: trim removal tool, small flat head screwdriver, T20 Torx driver, and 2mm Allen key. Parts: base, insert, and dog point set screw.
Step 1: Turn the hazard lights ON so the switch is extended outward.
Step 2: Use the small flat head screwdriver to pop out the switch. The cutout shown here is same on both sides.
Step 3: Hazard lights can be turned back off. Use a trim removal tool (or a larger flat head screwdriver with the tip cover in electrical tape) to pry out the hazard light trim piece.
Step 4: Remove the torx screw located to the lower right.
Step 5: Insert the mount base. It's a tight fit, and the bezel should sit flush with the face of the instrument cluster binnacle. Step 6: Secure with the same Torx screw that was removed in Step 4.
Step 7: Install the mount insert. This may take a little finesse due to the tight tolerances. Step 8: Insert the dog point set screw
Step 9: Using the 2mm Allen key, tightened set screw until recessed. The hole on the far side of the mount insert is sized to accept the extended tip of the set screw, and will prevent the screw from being tightened to far.
Step 10: Re-insert hazard switch.
It looks great! Bringing something like this - new to the world - is hard work!
Ive always like my Rennline mount, but also have always disliked how low it is and distracting to look at for navigation. This will be a huge improvement.
Perfect timing for an upcoming road trip with n May!
Site is a work in progress, but it is live.

Supplies will be limited, but I'm printing more every day. If your preferred mount is unavailable, please click on the "notify when available" so I can get an idea on what inserts are in the highest demand. Currently only shipping in the US, but I'll get international options added soon. For the UK folks, I am planning to add a RHD option.
And as I've mentioned previously... if demand justifies switching to injection molding, I'll offer previous purchasers a replacement for the cost of shipping.
Cheers!
I'm sure most of you guys are aware but for those who are getting the ESR MagSafe 17mm ball with cable cutout, you can get iPhone thunderbolt charging cables that have a 45 degree (USB-C is available too) bend so the cable will be out of sight if you plan on running the cable behind the dash. Just an idea.
Thanks to all who have already placed an order!
Made some changes to how inventory is managed on the website, and I have a separate listing for additional inserts only for those wanting to try out multiple options.
https://www.rennclassic.com/product-...nt-insert-only
For those wanting the options with the cable cutout, those should all be available shortly.
Looks like youre up and running w the 3D printed version? I just copied your link to a 996 FB page where they were debating the RennLine mounts. Better get your printer in gear for a crush of orders.
Almost ready to order myself: do I want one of the ***** or should I step up to QuadLock?
Thanks for sharing. Have another couple dozen available now, and keeping my printer running as much as I can. Additional inserts are available separately if you can't decide on a mount.
For those who have already placed an order and want to change the insert/mount type, shoot me a PM. Managed to build up some stock of all options. Shipping out the first group of orders tomorrow.
Looks like the link for the product listing broke when I changed how items were organized. Here's the updated listing:
https://www.rennclassic.com/product-...e-mount-bundle
For those going with the cable cutout option, here are some more pics to help with the install.
Cable will go along the topside of plastic support structure in the instrument cluster binnacle. There's an existing cutout in the upper right that the cable sits nicely.
Next run the cable thru the cutout in the mount base, and proceed with install instructions posted previously.
Before finishing the install, play around with your complete setup to ensure you have enough cable length.
Ordered. 17 mm ball seems like the most common ball mount, ESR Halolock seems to have the strongest magnet and this is highest-reviewed 90 degree USB-A to USB-C cable on Amazon (3')

I've used both of the following in different cars. They're strong, and also have a 17mm (0.3mm) ball on the base. So I can swap the magnet portion over onto the new Hazard mount.

Great. What are you (and everyone else for that matter) connecting to on the other end? I'm assuming some people are connecting to head units. Are others tapping directly into the 12V or some intermediate connection?
Personally I'm not routing the cable into the dash, but I also went to the extra trouble making a USB-C PD port fit into a switch blank.
12V to QC4.0. I will connect it to the switched power in the unused phone plug in the center console.
So as I was driving around today, I was holding my phone in the anticipated position to get a better feel for it. It's going to be awesome! Thanks for doing this.
sorry for the incomplete info:
https://www.jacobsparts.com/items/USBMOD-O
I haven't used them before. Actually found them on Amazon when searching for 12V to QC adapters. Some novel things on their website. The issue here is there is no case. I'll prolly go to TAP plastics and buy a small box to suspend it in. Pictures coming.
Well this thing is rock steady. It took aboit 2 minutes to install and holds the aim unit in the perfect spot. I didnt weigh the aim but il sure its heavier then a 8" tablet. Its gonna be perfect for your cel phones. Ill try to get some better shots tomor with different Ram accessories i have.
I went to install mine today. Am I missing something? The stock hazard trim clips into place with two vertical spades. One on each side. The mount I received fit the opening perfectly, but did not have anything to hold it in place. I must be doing something wrong here.
Its very loose and certainly will not hold the weight of a cell phone. Someone point me in the right direction please!
Edit - I see now that its the torx screw that is intended to hold the mount in place. My mistake. I was thrown off by the new trim mount not using the spade clips.
Welp. New 996 owner, first day on the forum, and already about to make a purchase. Setting the trend early...
To OP- this work is fire! If this is how this community rolls, I am gonna have a blast!!
Thanks guys! Looking forward to getting some feedback from the early adopters. I was a little premature taking the initial orders. Realized the material wasn't up to snuff after sending some out. Reached out to everyone before anything was delivered. Revised the design and changed the material. And tested for the edge case scenarios that I should have been considering previously. Thankful for test support DeJeeper has been providing. Maybe he'll share the video from his Monday track day using the mount for his AIM Solo 2. The updated versions should all be getting delivered in the next few days.
500g (over double the weight of an AIM Solo 2 or iPhone 13 Pro Max) supported on 2" arm in the oven at 170 F.
I just spent 8 sessions over the last 2 days at Watkins with the AIM hanging off the bracket and it perfomed flawlessly. Unfortanately a real wheel bearing gave out at the end if the day yesterday so no 3rd day for me.
Ill get a vid up soon.
First of all a HUGE shout out to
@yaz996
for sending me Version 2 even though I had not even intalled V.1 yet. Thank you!
Finally installed mine yesterday; the car was in the air getting a suspension refresh until then. It is such a great place to hang a phone or whatnot! I had a problem though; the screw holding the hazard switch in place was too short to engage the threads once the new surround piece was added. I found a longer screw (why yes, I
am
a packrat) and was good to go.
Looks like I need to include a longer screw. Happen to have any details on what you used for the replacement? PET is showing that they switched from 5.0x30 (999-919-188-09) to 4.8x25 (999-073-220-09) for 2001. My early 2001 still had the longer screw. The mount is 4mm thick there, and that leave about 11mm on the backside with the longer screw (see pic below). It could probably still be installed with the shorter screw it is inserted into the mount first, but I'm not comfortable with that much thread engagement.
The screw I used was about 1/2" longer than the factory piece. It was long enough that I was concerned it might hit something, so I screwed it in by itself first. It spun right in without effort and I concluded that it did not come in contact with anything. I think you could add 10mm without worry.
EDIT: My car is a 2002 996.2.
Found a regional (in stock) source for a 35mm version of the factory screw. No surprise that it's a somewhat specialty item. I'll get those mailed out shortly after they get to me.
It kind of a uniique "blind" apex. U dont see it until a third of the way around. Its natural to look foward while breaking so your eyes stay on what u r trying to avoid. The issue is u dont know what u r turning into. I had a hard time with keeping my radius and throtle input in the turn correct thus making the car unstable.
The correction is to turn your head early and the car will follow. That way u pick up the curve much sooner. I fixate too long on each visual que. I need to move to the next item faster to get the car to go to the next "stage" faster.
Its just unlearning 30+ years of street driving.
I will be updating my thread or we can carry on in the track video thread so yaz can sell some doodads
.
Just want to say that the Yaz phone mount is "top notch", very well designed and in the perfect location. I have had all sorts of phone mounts and there all junk compared to Yaz's..
For those intending to route a cable through the mount, here are some additional details with that aspect of the install. It is not necessary to completely remove the binnacle to route a cable through it. The more challenging part is feeding the cable down through the dash to whatever else you're connecting (i.e. head unit or power source). It only takes a couple more minutes to completely removed the binnacle (pop out the instrument cluster and hazard trim connectors), so that might still be the easier way.
Remove the microphone cover trim and T20 torx screw to the left of the instrument cluster.
Pop the binnacle up out of the spring clips securing it to the dash. Feed a zip tie up through the small gap behind the edge of the trim piece (see next pic for more detail), and out through the hazard trim cutout.
Here's a pic of the cable routing with the whole assembly removed.
Tape the cable to the zip tie and feed through the hazard trim cutout. Feed the other end of the cable down through the dash cutout.
Proceed with the mount install. Be liberal in the amount of cable exposed. There's plenty of room in the binnacle for additional cable length.
The cable cutout was sized so that the cable can be pushed back into the binnacle.
My phone mount went in today. Executive summary: Installation is not complete, but it is functional.
I wanted to use the higher power mag charger so I bought this board that can detect fast charging devices and deliver sufficient current. Here it is with power wires and the USB coming off the other side
I couldn't find a nice compact box so I scrounged through my wife's collection of collections and found an adequate hold-me-over until I find a final solution. Cut the corner. Tape the leads. Not horrible.
Connect to the phone jack hiding in the center console. Specifically connected to the switched contact so there is no parasitic draw from the board when the car is off. I stole the male contacts from a Molex 4 pin power harness. Not shown is the tape added to cover the open metal and secure the wires to the connector.
As Yaz has indicated, '02 and later cars need a longer screw to secure the housing. I used a #10x1.5" sheet metal screw. It uses a phillips screw driver. I hope this doesn't imbalance the car.
And, calorie replacement therapy after stress testing the mount! It's all good! Thanks Yaz!
Idea for easy way to protect the charger and provide a mount.
Use a piece of 1" shrink tubing to shrink around the charger for protection instead of trying to source an appropriate "box". And before shrinking the tubing around the charger/board, place a re-usable zip-tie along the charger/board to use for mounting/securing.
Shrink tubing has a lot of creative uses..
Oh I've been giving that plenty of thought. Ultimate Cup Holders has a pretty good option, but unfortunately doesn't work well for me. Passenger side fire extinguisher means I'd have to put it on the driver side. And anything larger than a can of soda would be hitting my calf.

There's another forum member with some interesting options using the storage shelf and ashtray insert (can't remember the name at the moment). I'll probably make an insert for the center console storage compartment, and modify the hinge so it can lock in the up position.
Finally got a chance to install mine.
Here‘s what it looks like in a Metropol Blue interior:
The install was very easy to do and this in SO much better than any other phone mount available.
@yaz996
, you need to patent this design ASAP!
I plan to use this with my Dragy.
When I finally get around to buying an Aim Solo2, I‘ll mount it here.
I‘ll leave the current Rennline mount for my phone.
I installed Version 2 with the longer screw and Yaz hit it out of the park!
I use my phone for navigation on rides with the local PCA and previously used a bulky Ram X-grip
which I didn’t much care for. So I went all in and ordered Yaz’s setup and the Quad Lock gear and
could not be happier.
Version 2 mounts firmly in the dash and holds the phone in an unobtrusive location where
you don’t have to take your eyes of the road for very long.
Very reasonable price includes excellent customer service!
Highly Recommended.
Yaz replaced mine with the newer version AND longer screw. (I didnt even ask it just came!) Best customer service ever! ) Only problem is my new one is blue like Metropol blue! No complaint just noticed. Did you use a different material? And yes it definitely holds much better!!
Yeah. Different, stronger material. I think the hint of blue is the resin manufacture's base material before they add pigmentation. I only really notice the color when holding it up to bright light.
Based on the positive feedback so far, I'll be getting quotes for injection molding. Need to make some design for manufacturing revisions first. Any injection molded parts would be in black. Also going to get quotes to do the base in black anodized aluminum.
Finally got around to installing mine today and Im super pleased. Couldnt be easier to install and it seems very sturdy. If you own a 996 you need to buy one, period. Yaz is about as stand up a guy as they come too!
Ordered, received, and installed ! Great mount and super easy to install. Still deciding on the cable routing as I got the cutout version and deciding if I use a 45 degree angle connector or black vs white cable to satisfy my ocd tendencies

Anyone know where I can get a ball mount with this type of slide in adapter? This has a ball mount but way too small
Current setup. I want to move the car-play unit to the hazard trim but I need the piece with a ball mount to attach it to!
Yaz's hazard trim-mount is top notch. I've bolted on two different ESR HaloLock magnet mounts and neither of them will hold the phone (iPhone XR) on hard acceleration, bumps or sudden turns (that's the way 911s are driven---not changing).
Is anyone having better luck with either of these two mounts?

This is the iPhone XR case I've purchased, is there a better case?

I'd really like to use a magnetic phone mount if possible. Any better suggestions?
I'm currently using the ESR mount from your 1st link in both my Porsche and 4Runner, and haven't had any issues. However, I have a Pixel 6 with a magsafe case from Moment.
Made a similar adapter to use the ESR mount in my 4Runner with what I had previously designed to get the Quad lock stuff in a good location. If anyone is looking for other adapters, let me know and I can probably whip something up.
Update, Anker makes a HaloLock stick on magnetic ring that grips super tightly to the ESR mounts. The iPhoneXR cases I'd purchased have a non-magnetic ring and barely held the ESR. Anker's magnet ring works great with the ESR and Yaz's mount.
The quotes I got back on injection molding and machined aluminum really weren't economical due to some of the necessary complex geometries unfortunately. However I've been able to find some great options with powder bed fusion printing. I'm going to be able to offer the parts in glass filled nylon and aluminum. The nylon version is in production now, and should be available next week. Price will stay the same initially. Still need to get quotes on anodizing the aluminum version, and price is TBD. For everyone who has already purchased, I'll be offering the nylon as a free replacement or the aluminum for a hefty discount.
Mount base in aluminum and glass filled nylon.
The nylon version has a textured look. The gaps have been tightened up since this first set of test pieces.
The aluminum finish is very close that on the X98 braking brake. This is without any anodizing.
I FINALLY had time to install mine.
Smoothed the surface with some 0000 steel wool. It did a great job. Then some Rustoleum flat black. Due to the tight clearances, I did tape the mating surfaces.
I'm not 100% happy with the new finish, but it's pretty good. The original piece scuffed badly on removal, mostly just by looking at it wrong. I don't even remember touching it in the places that are now scuffed.
The fit and the new longer screw work great.
Nice. As I said, not 100% happy about the finish, but maybe I'll work on it more another time.
I have the 17mm ball. Which goes well with alot of cheap magnet mounts. I used these.
Amazon
Amazon
And then I just took off the magnet part to move onto this mount.
It works great.
I don't have personal experience with the OtterBox cases, but I know the reputation for being tough (i.e. thick). That might cause some issues with magnetic mounts. That being said there are clamp style mounts available that use a 17mm ball attachment. The 17mm ball (both with and without the cable cutout) versions have been the most popular so far.
I finally got around to running my wire internally today. I'm not sure how others have routed the wire but I chose to drill a hole in the underside of the binnacle. Works like a charm.
Ok, so Yaz sent me a replacement one that is reinforced. The day before I replace it mine broke! I do use a heavier load than most I assume. It is a Carplay unit that works great wirelessly!
Yeah the glassed filled nylon replacement is far and away an improvement in strength and thermal properties. The only real additional benefit for the upcoming aluminum version is cosmetics. I've reached out to everyone that purchased previously regarding what version they would prefer, and haven't heard back from 25%. If that email got lost in the shuffle for anyone, please shoot me message.
Still trying to sort out what USPS did with your first package.
996 only for now. Plans for a 986 version. My dad is a 997 guy. If there's a way to get a version in there, I'll figure it out but the interior redesign means it'll be a very different piece.
Yeah it's pretty different. 986 doesn't actually have a separate trim piece surrounding the hazard switch. The switch itself is larger and asymmetrical to cover up the binnacle screw location.
I do have a 986 binnacle (instrument cluster surround) in my garage to work from. Hopefully have it available within a couple months.
I'll look forward to this also. Just ordered my 996 version since I did the GT3 console delete. Jury's out on whether the missus will let me pull the console from (what has now become) HER 986.
Hey Yaz, I've had the mount installed for like 6 weeks. It is a massive upgrade to the car. I'm using the ram mount with the little arm and ball, I recommend to anyone looking into this.
The more important question is, when are you going to engineer a usable cup holder? I have the ultimate cupholder on the passenger side and it just doesn't cut the mustard.
Something like that would worn I guess. Need something that would hold up to a tumbler.
That along with the ultimate cup holder on the floor is a decent way to get 2 cup holders.
the ultimate cup holder just flops around all over the place for me. The kids knock it around.
theres just really no other place for decent cupholders, which is a problem in this day and age
Finally put in the nylon version and fed the USB cable through the dash. We've had some days at 115C so I think I'll be needing this higher temp version.
Yaz was also good enough to craft a custom box for the power supply and mating connector to the orphaned cell phone connector in the center console. Very cool!
With this connector, I also ran an unswitched power wire to my sub woofer amp in the back. It's really nice to have clean wiring.
Here is what I had done. Pretty kludgy.
Thanks Yaz!
[QUOTE=golock911;18353976]... We've had some days at 115C...
/QUOTE]
I Don't think that means what you think it means.
239F ?? Wow.
Install looks great.
Glad to hear this! I also have a powered sub to install and with this innovation its also worthwhile to thread a power cord through the dash. I just have to remove the switch power connector from my cart!
Just keep in mind that the telephone wiring is on a circuit rated for 7.5 amps. Don't recall off hand what else is on the circuit. I'll take a look at the wiring diagrams.
I'll be in for the Plug-N-Play USB set-up when done.. Thanks for creating these handy upgrades for us !! I know it is a labor of love and very little monetary gain in doing so..
Thanks, man. The sub *can* run with fewer than 4 amps of current. But Im planning on using the phone wiring only for the remote turn-on. Not sure what the current draw is there. Hopefully that leaves enough for the phone to charge (doesnt have to be fast).
Actually yes. Got back all my finished aluminum parts today. My anodizer had trouble getting the dye to take to the aluminum alloy, so those parts were done in black cerakote instead. Also I won't have the glass bead blasted/clear anodized aluminum version for sale until the next batch. I'll be reaching again to the original purchasers that expressed interest in upgrading to the aluminum version in the next couple days. After I know what quantities are left, I'll make those available on the website. Also planning to add a package deal with the USB/connector.
From left to right: black glass filled nylon, black cerakote aluminum, black matte powder coated aluminum, gloss powder coated aluminum, glass bead blasted aluminum
Sign me up for a black cerakote aluminum option!!
I got my iphone 14 pro last week, and the enlarged camera area is causing some interference issues with the ESR mag safe charger I have. For reference, there is only about 1/8" of clearance between the bottom of the camera bezel on my Apple magsafe case and the OD of the apple magsafe charger. The ESR mag safe is obviously much larger, and the phone does not always sit flat on the charger unless you align everything perfectly.
@yaz996
can you share what the size differences are between the apple magsafer charger and rennline charger?
The Apple brand magsafe charger has a 56mm diameter. Once that is inserted into the RAM B mount adapter that diameter is now 61mm. The ESR magsafe charger has a 60.5mm diameter at the raised circular portion. The Rennline magsafe charger has a 57mm diameter, so that might solve your problem. The Rennline mount isn't as strong as the ESR, but you could try out the one I bought. Shoot me a PM.
Ive been looking at how to solve for 986 in the meantime. The hazard light switch really is the perfect spot for a 17mm ball mount.
What about (1) relocating the hazard light control to a standard oval switch in one of the blanks just below? Then (2) fabricate (3D print?) a plate that fits securely into the hole and attach a ball mount to it.
(1) sounds easy, not sure if hidden traps involved
(2) no idea, presumably need good measurements or a sample to work with
any thoughts or advice?
monty
Relocation isn't necessary, but definitely a more complex project due to the geometries, constraints, and other details like screw holding the binnacle to dash being located on the cavity centerline. Figured it was good excuse to add a 3D scanner to my tool kit.
Oh interesting. LOL if I'd opened it up and saw a screw in there (of any kind) I'd probably just start trying to attach things to it.
I look forward to seeing what you devise!
I'm not a marketing guy, so my product descriptions and buzzwords could use some work. First two options are the basic telephone wiring connector to USB power module with a choice between switched and always-on power. The other two options just provide the additional leads to make use of the power not used by the USB module. Here's a couple pics:
Basic option: telephone wiring connector to USB power module. The version seen here is on switched power, and the always-on power connection is unused.
Dual option: telephone wiring connector to both USB power module and extra leads. In the version seen here, the USB power module is always on, and switched power can be provided to another accessory.
Nice!
I'm also looking to upgrade from my early 3D printed mount to a black cerakote aluminum. I wasn't going to, but those look nice!
I'll also be getting switched power USB connector (with the always on wires). Those look really well done.
Thanks. Making everything to the same standard that I do for mine own vehicles.
I'd encourage anyone placing an order to include their Rennlist user name. Helpful for me for make that connection.
Hi Yas.
I have tried to order one of the mounts but when I check out it tells me that you don't ship to my country (UK).
I've already ordered the relevant quadlock parts so it would be a real shame not to be able to pick up one of your mounts.
Is there any way of getting one shipped to me?
Cheers
Unfortunately I don't have any prototypes ready yet. I was trying to get something done while out on paternity leave from my day job, but the return to work snuck up pretty quick.
I installed mine over the holidays - fantastic design, holds my phone in the perfect location that I'm returning my CarPlay HU since I can easily see my phone while driving for directions
Big thanks to Yaz for shipping so quickly to the UK. Received RHD version yesterday (no extra taxes to pay on import) and installed last night in about 5 minutes flat! Need to route the wire a bit more thoughtfully but the part itself is spot on 👍🏻.
YES! Its perfect for WAZE directions. I had a carplay unit as well and first attached it to to this hazard mount but dont need it as the phone is big enough and I bluetooth to the MR12VOLT
Ordered a mount today and a switch USB module. Super excited! Didn’t realize leaving our rennlist info was a thing, but I would be the order going to Des Moines!
Hmm… So, I installed everything and used the Rennline mount even though it wasn’t highly recommend. I thought that it was the best looking MagSafe charger, but the phone does tend to fall under acceleration + bumpy Midwest roads.
So, I ordered the ESR mount and it seems that I can’t the ESR charger tight enough to the 17mm ball - even using the included rubber insert. The plastic nut is as tight as I can get it and the ESR charger still moves around quite easily. There’s no way it can support an angle with my iPhone 13 Pro Max on it.
I wonder if theres a variance on the ESR mount itself. I have a 14 Pro Max and it is pretty sturdy on the mount the plastic nut on the back of the ESR is tight.
Sorry for the silly question but I just wanted to be clear- switched power means that the module turns on and off with the car? And with the dual option, the always live USB module could drain battery if I left something connected?
I'm also curious about your headless bluetooth setup, I'm about to do a console delete and was trying to figure out how to do the same thing myself. It looks great!
I love it when this thread gets refreshed. First of all it is a fine product from a top notch seller. Secondly it reinforces my longstanding thought that car makers need to get out of the infotainment business and just give us an interface and a place to hang the gizmos we already own.
Yeah. Switched power is on/off with the ignition switch. Always-on could drain the battery if something power hungry remained connected.
For my headless setup these were the parts used:
MBT-RX JL Audio Bluetooth Adapter
EFX-RLC Remote Level Controller
EQS755 Clarion Equalizer
70-1787 Metra Radio/Amplifier Wiring Harness
SI4612 Stinger 12-Foot 4000 Series 6 Channel RCA Cable
RCA Couplings (x4)
I have the equalizer under the passenger seat mounted to Rennline's GT3 bucket seat fire extinguisher (FE11-BLK) with velcro. If my car had a glove box, I would have mounted it there. For the volume ****, I disassembled the RLC and 3D-printed an enclosure to fit in the cigarette lighter location. The **** itself is actually the outer bezel from a wiper control switch and a 3D-printed the inner piece.
Amen!
Imagine if they made the PCCM+ with integrated climate controls so we wouldnt need to relocate them yes I do have a GT3 console delete so my frustration is biased
hey Yaz any updates on this? Or suggestions on how to get started making my own, if I dont want to wait? Happy to share if I come up with a solution.
Unfortunately no. Really the best option for Boxsters at this point is Rennline's newer mount for cars with console delete. I think my mount is definitely better when it comes to the 996 with the respect to both position and insert options. The direction I was going with the 986 mount would have required also purchasing the 996 switch button (996-613-121-00-A02 or 996-613-121-10-A05) for another $40+. With those cost stacking up, the value isn't really there.
Hey
@yaz996
, first off, amazing work with this solution. I'm definitely interested and would like to buy both the mount and fast charge module. Did you ever get around to making a bundle?
Thanks. I don't have a bundled option per se. The website builder wants me to pay an extra monthly fee for stuff like that. I do free shipping on orders of $100 or more, so you'll save about $8 by ordering them together.
Dumb question for
@yaz996
: I purchased a mount and
USB Fast Charging Module
(very happy - thanks for creating these solutions!) but where do I find the telephone wiring circuit for the business end of that cable? Presumably it's somewhere below the binnacle but for a n00b like me I don't know where to look first. Thanks!
Lower center console. Pop either of the carpeted side pieces off, and fish around with your fingers for a loose wire/connector. Unfortunately I don't have any pics handy, and my car is off for paint at the moment.
How is the telephone wiring working out for the powered AMP? What AMP? Can you use Yaz's remove volume with the AMP?
Thanks, man. The sub *can* run with fewer than 4 amps of current. But I’m planning on using the phone wiring only for the remote turn-on. Not sure what the current draw is there. Hopefully that leaves enough for the phone to charge (doesn’t have to be fast).
What a brilliant idea.
Have you made a Youtube video for your product? I really think you should do it and get the word out there.
I just recently purchased a new to me 1999 Boxster and have been contemplating on the best possible phone mount (good location, durable and strong phone holding).
Will contact you soon, once I decide on the phone mount option. I'm guessing The quad lock option is probably the best as far as not falling off.
I've always wanted to get something like this and this looks great. I've love to pair this with the USB connector that goes to the telephone connector.
A few questions:
-What mount is good for an iphone 12 mini? Mine usually lives inside a Speck case?
-What happens with the USB connector when you have a GT3 console delete?
- Are you guys using the USB connector tucked behind the stereo/hvac or are you doing something else?
-Has anyone use the USB connector on a blank spot to the left or right of the stereo/ hvac stuff?
No YouTube video for the time being. Actually prefer the slower pace of orders coming in currently. Pretty short on time between family life and my own car (and a larger project I plan to reveal sometime soon).
So this mount won't work for the Boxster (unless you plan to swap in a 996 instrument cluster and binnacle). There's a few small differences with the hazard switch/trim that make a completely different design necessary. With some of the other mount options out there already, I've put a Boxster version on the back burner.
ESR Halolock
ESR Halolock
has been the most popular Magsafe mount. That's what I'm using in both of my vehicles.
The USB module/connector is slim enough and has enough cable length it can really sit anywhere behind the dash (with or with the GT3 delete).
I did make a USB-C PD charging port in a switch blank for my own car (edit: added pic). Not currently offering that on the website because it was too much work getting it to look OEM.
Hey everyone, a quick update on my purchase. I purchased the Quad Lock version. This mount is awesome. I absolutely love it. It holds the phone in the perfect spot (for me) and it's solid. No vibrations whatsoever so the screen is easy to see. Only if you turn on the video camera will you notice the image is moving around because the floating lens in the iPhone is moving around, so you can't use it as a dash cam. However, I have an iPhone XS so maybe that happens to me because it's an older model.
I tested it on a 2.5 hour drive at highway speeds and zero issues.
I purchased the mount, along with the switched power module. I also purchased a
right angle usb-c to usb-c cable from Amazon
right angle usb-c to usb-c cable from Amazon
to keep it looking as tight as possible.
Finally, I painted it to match my interior with
Color Bond interior paint
as recommended by
@Capt. Obvious
in post 73 of this thread. The color match is spot on.
Overall, I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. Props to
@yaz996
for creating this great product. Below are some pics. If anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to answer.
Oh my gosh, I just placed an order for my 2002 Boxster S, for some reason I did not realize this was for a 996 only. I sent an order cancellation request through your website. My apologies.
Not currently. My 997 access is limited to visits to see my parents on the other side of the country, so I haven't had a chance to figure out if its even doable.
While waiting for my hazard mount, I took off the instrument cluster to make it easier to route the cable. Here's what I did since my cable is pretty robust and has a 90 usb-c connector. I made the small rectangular hole that is just above the hazard socket a little longer towards the front. Enough to be able to have the cable exit the binnacle just in front of the socket and also large enough to get the cable end through.
I enlarged the hole by the socket clip.
Socket fits and cable comes out next to the hazard socket harness.
I put the instrument cluster back on while routing the other end of the cable along the hazard harness and into the space behind the HVAC unit, ready for the phone plug to cable usb-a connector.
I am expecting the hazard mount and harness to be in today's mail.
Once I installed the instrument cluster back, I realized the units had shifted to metric (kph, Km). I got my owners manual out and looked up how to set it back to miles and mph. To do that, though, I had to turn the ignition on and I now have no oil level check, washer fluid level, oil pressure, fuel level, outside temp, and coolant temp. Seems like something is not connected, but before I tear into it all again to check connections...is there something I'm overlooking? Like maybe I need to drive the car around a bit so the sensors have something to sense? Wishful thinking, I suppose. Anybody else have this issue?
Make sure the blue green and white connectors are seated fully and the clips are snapped which hold them tight into the back of the instrument cluster! Everything should work fine without starting or driving the car around so I'm sure one of those is not tight!
I pulled the binnacle today and re-seated all three plugs. Yeah, I'm sure they were not fully seated the first time. This did the truck - first fold the lever all the way back, it kinda clicks into position. Then press the plug fully into the slot and the lever will pop up a little bit. Keep pressing down on the plug and fold the lever completely home until it snaps into place. Everything works as it should now. Phew!
Here is why I needed the hazard phone mount...
Carbon fiber console delete!
The finished hazard phone mount:
@Bumlinger
Love all the Carbon, I just installed the same Rennline GT3 delete panel... I plan to add more CF inside. Which pieces did you get the rest from? Does the CF all match?
20 years ago it would have matched perfectly. I have the carbon fiber trim option from the factory and it has faded and yellowed somewhat. What can you do? Works for me, though.
@Bumlinger
happy you got it figured out so quickly. What charging base are you using? Haven't seen that one yet, and I'd like to put together a list of verified compatible chargers.
This is the most discrete one I found and been using since April:
WOFALO Magsafe mount
WOFALO Magsafe mount
Here's what the WOFALO looks like in my car
So, hey there, this is my first post here at Rennlist. I just wanted to tell you my thoughts on the hazard trim Phone mount. It was a Christmas gift from my dad as I showed it to him a few weeks ago, after being disappointed by the Rennline center console delete mount that only fits boxsters and 996.1 cars, as I had to find out after buying it
First of all, since I live in Germany it was quite expensive with shipping and extra toll payment. Around 140$ for the normal nylon variant in total.
After receiving it though I knew even at that price point that was worth it. In itself its already extremely durable feeling and well made.
As my 996 Targa has a lot of leather options which include the hazard trim, I - as a hobby leather craftsman - covered the front of the new trim in black leather, which replicates the look of the original trim.
Today I fitted it and well, this thing is incredible! It is like an original Porsche part and fits incredibly well. Fitting was also really easy, though the original trim was a bit difficult to remove if you dont want to add scratches to the dash or the original trim itself.
I bought a sleek and minimalist MagSafe adapter with a 17mm ballmount and also added some alcantara to it to make it look and feel more premium. Otherwise its full anodized Aluminium and only cost about 7$. Holds the phone perfectly, though I have yet to try out how secure it really is when driving (currently in winter hibernation)
Im extremely happy and would advice ANY 996 owner to buy this phone mount, even at that high-german-price point. Thanks a lot for creating it
@yaz996
Hoping this reaches you... There's no contact information listed on your website and I like to order it see it's out of stock. You know when you will have them available?
Hazard Trim Phone Mount
70 millimeter with cable cut out nylon
if you're not making more of them do you have photos of the alternative and aluminum please
[email removed]
awesome!!! I'm looking forward to it. when they come in if you don't mind emailing me directly in case I miss this forum I'm looking to order right away thanks
I have used the magsafe apple phone charger but my phone falls off with some light bumps! Went back to a grip mount! Anyone find the mag mounts that hold the phone SECURELY?
I found the the actual Apple branded magsafe charger to be weakest of the magnetic chargers I tested. The ESR Halolock is what I'm using now. When I start driving the 996 again in a couple weeks (weather dependent), I'm going to test out Quadlock's line of magsafe products.
I'm testing out Peak Design, in case you're interested; their selling point is that although they are MagSafe compatible with a decent magnet and all that, if you really need the phone locked in they actually have a positive mechanical lock in their phone case. Very neat idea.
I'm familiar with them for their camera bags primarily, but did also look briefly into their phone products. Same story with Quadlock regarding the mechanical lock in addition to Magsafe.
Brilliant product you got here Yaz!
I will probably be buying a 17mm mount myself as soon as i sort some things out in the interior, but i have a question as it seems you are well versed in the center console wiring at this point:
Do you have a suggestion for hooking up a USB fast charge dongle for us guys with the in-car phone module connectors occupied? (Car currently features a period correct Nokia mobile phone
)
@yaz996
Was just looking on your site and it doesn't seem like the regular 17mm without the charging cable hole is available. Is that coming back or no?
Is the Nokia actually functional? If not, I'd just leave that unplugged. If you're actually using it, the quick and dirty method would be a couple T-taps but I'm guessing you don't want to mar the wires. A splitter is on my list of things to do (and one other Rennlist member I believe), but haven't had much time to do anything lately.
I was planning on phasing out everything without the cable cutout. Versions with the cutout are far more popular, and its not visible once an accompanying mount is installed. I could add one without the cutout to the next batch if that's your preference though.
You would be correct about wanting to keep the harness intact
A splitter would be mint in my case, do you know who that other member is?
Either way, would be very interested in a splitter type product if/when you get a chance to look into it! Cheers.
I got the Quadlock version and the phone power cable. They are awesome!
When will extra 17mm inserts w/ cutout be back in stock? I am going a different direction and the 17mm insert will be perfect.
It works for me with the rennline ball and magnet. I use a metal plate on the case. Lucky me, I carry two phones, I wouldnt trust the MagSafe on that magnet.
Its a great mount! - Thx Yaz 👍🏽.
Does anyone know of an iPhone mount (preferably that fits the hazard mount) that holds the cable at the bottom and allows you to slide the phone in? That way you can keep the cable in one place and you're not always handling it.
I've had issues with CarPlay starting to fail after a cable gets ~6 months old. Since I have CarPlay I stick the phone in the cubby but that's not a great solution either. I'm thinking of putting in a mount.
I use a Tachform spring loaded billet aluminum clamp holder for my iPhone in mine. 1 ball mount. Got it on amazon I think. 90 degree cable is just long enough
I originally wanted to go with a Peak design case but they don't support any standard ball mounts, so before trying quadlock I ordered 3 different Magsafe options from Amazon: Carmount x1... cool but Magnet was very weak, the well known ESR Mount 15w version (there were two older versions as well), and a Lisen Mount.
Lisen Qi2 for Magsafe
Lisen Qi2 for Magsafe
--
The Lisen magnet is stronger than the ESR, the footprint is smaller, and for $30 it comes with cigarette charger and USB-C cable. It's slightly adjustable as you can see I turned it so the cable follows the contour of dash. I'll probably run the cable thru the dash but I'm currently debating adding either the Classic Radio or the Rennkitt bluetooth adapter. Big thanks again to Yaz996 for developing this for all of us and also quickly answering some questions from me via email.
I highly recommend the MR12VOLT . Easy install and works perfectly with the oem stereo. Bluetooth for my phone AND I plug a USB stick into it and the stereo sees the music as CDs!! Just pick which CD to play and it plays it off the USB! I l;ike having my phone up high like this for Maps I do not have to look down at the OEM screen or aftermarket screen for MAPS!
I too did the Rennclassic phone mount, ran a cable through the mount and dash to my Mr12Volt to power the phone, and used Rennclassics power tap from the unused factory phone plug to power Mr12Volt. Microphone on top of steering column. Works flawlessly. All of my music loads from voice command or the screen. Factory stereo mirrors the name of track. No cuts to factory stuff, all can be returned to original. So much cheaper than a PCCM upgrade, with all the tech I need (the phone calls are even decent).
Just got my order in and its on its way!
I ordered the phone wiring for switched 12v to hardwire the charger (among other things). Can anyone recommend something that allows you to go from bare wire 12v to USB-c to plug into the ESR charger?
I wish you'd posted before I dropped your order in the mail this morning. I've been offering this product for exactly that purpose:

Shoot me a PM and we can get it sorted.
Hi Terry,
Yeah I have plenty in stock of the aluminum Quadlock mounts (all with the cable cutout and black cerakote finish). Good timing too since I just dropped the price on the aluminum ones. Order can be placed thru the website.

The drop down list is a bit cumbersome at the moment. Need to get that fixed, and weed out the number of options. If you have any issues, fill out the "Contact Us" section on the home page, or PM me here.
Cheers!
Hey
@yaz996
do you know when youll have stock on the 17mm with cable cut out by chance?
Also noob question but for the USB fast charging module youre selling the base 996 Carrera has the telephone cable to plug and play? (Where is this currently hiding in the dash?)
Next batch of parts is arriving tomorrow, and I should have the inventory updated on my website Saturday morning (assuming they pass my quality check).
Telephone wiring connector came standard on all US 996 models. It was an option elsewhere in the world. The connector should be located in the lower center console forward of the shifter. To access it you'll need to pop out either the "bat wing" or carpeted side trim, and then fish around for the loose wire/connector. On my car, it was easiest to access from the passenger side.
Hope that helps, and let me know if you have any other questions.
Wanted to give everyone a heads up that later this month I'll be traveling off the grid for a few weeks. Going to stop taking new orders on 9/15 so I can be caught up before I leave. Then I'll have everything back up and running mid October.
Connector on right is the factory cell phone plug, with the RennClassic plug attached. It allowed me to solder the wires to the Mr12Volt, and not have to cut the factory wiring. I just pulled the two side panels, plug was laying on carpet.
So interesting update today. I originally bought the Quad Lock wireless charger, along with the case and the mount from Yaz. See
post # 245
.
I recently updated to the iPhone 16 Pro with the
Apple clear case
. I also purchased the 17mm ball mount from Yaz and the
ESR MagSafe mount with CryoBoost
ESR MagSafe mount with CryoBoost
from Amazon.
I put the phone on the charger, and it would start charging. If I started to drive, within about 20 seconds, the charging would stop, then a few seconds later would start up again. After a ton of troubleshooting I discovered that the vibration from the driving was causing the charging to stop for about 2 to 3 seconds and then start up again. If the car was idle, then no interruption in charging. To confirm this I started hitting the dash with my hand to cause vibrations and sure enough, the charging would get interrupted for a few seconds.
I'm wondering if the magnet on this latest model of the ESR mount is weaker, or perhaps the clear Apple case is a bit too slick? I'm debating trying a different charger, or a different case. Has anyone experienced this issue?
The obvious next troubleshooting step, yet I didn't think of it. lol I think I was really tired. Either way, thanks
@Dranon
! I'll do some more tests and report back.
Ok, so I've got an update. I performed multiple troubleshooting tasks:
1. I took off the case and I experienced the exact same behavior. It literally made no difference whatsoever.
2. I purchased the
Lisen
Lisen
charger that was recommended on here. I loved the form factor as it is super minimalist. However, it had 3 flaws. First, it still stopped charging when driving over bumpy roads. Although, to be fair, it only did it twice on a 15 minute drive whereas the ESR CryoBoost charger disconnected like 30 times on the same drive. Second, it allows the phone to rotate pretty easily. Not a huge deal, but if you tried to use the phone while on the charger, it would make it hard to do so as it would start to rotate. Finally, it caused a lot of static and clicking sounds with the radio. The lower on the band I was, the worse it was. I have a simple 99 C2, with the factory CDR-210 radio, so I use it quite a bit.
3. I then purchased the regular
ESR
ESR
charger that everyone on here recommended. It is working just about perfectly. I've completed multiple drives and it has stopped charging exactly zero times. It holds the phone incredibly securely. It's even a bit difficult to rotate the phone. It's easier to just pull it off and rotate it, then put it back on. The only issue is that it causes a minimal amount of static on the radio stations lower on the band. But it's very minimal and not a deal breaker by any stretch.
Hope this information helps someone.
I've tried a handful of wireless chargers, and wanted to recommend this
Peak Design
charger. I've had it in my Rubicon since last October and it has never dropped my phone in the dozens of trails I've been on. The quality definitely commands the asking price and can't recommend it enough. No overheating issues, gripy surface means the phones hasn't rotated or dropped, aluminum construction is very nice, minimalist/discrete design pairs well with any interior, and rubber coating on the ball really locks this mount in place.
Another Great Product from the Rennlisters Community !! We have quite a few Rennlisters who have great upgrades for our 996's like this and CoopDucks Oil temp Gauge and many others !!!
Great Forum to enhance the 996....
@Zmonsta
You probably couldn't find it because I misspelled his handle, here ya go just PM him....It is a well thought out OIl Temp Gauge and another awesome product from members of the Community..

@yaz996
are you planning on getting aluminum ones back in stock any time soon?
Also, is there general consensus about the most secure apple magsafe charger that is low profile? The ESR one seems to be really strong, but I just find it very ugly! It would also be amazing to have one that plugs into power from behind (I realize that probably doesn't exist).
The upgrade to the ESR is this one.

The magnet is pretty robust its perfectly round so you can angle it away from the dash. I ended up getting a micro 90 USB C cable and it cleans it up a little. Yazs set up is fantastic.
No plans to make any more aluminum ones any time soon. Interest really hasn't been there to justify the increased cost and additional production steps. Some of that stems from the aluminum alloys/powders typically used in 3d printing not anodizing well. Which then leads to coating instead. And then leads to different dimensions and tolerances, or lots of finishing work. They aren't on the website anymore, but I do have a couple left (1 RAM-B without the cable cutout, 1 Quadlock with the cable cutout) so if anyone is interested message me here or thru the website.
On a related note, I'm also doing away with the non-cable cutout versions. Significantly less demand, and in reality the hole isn't visible once someone has finished their install. Between the 3 mount styles, with/without the cable cutout, nylon/aluminum, and LHD/RHD, I think the number of options could seem overwhelming to those interested. Keeping 24 versions in stock was a bit cumbersome on my end too. So we're down to 17mm/RAM-B/Quadlock and LHD/RHD. All in Nylon PA12. All with the cable cutout.
In regards to the best magsafe charger, definitely some good suggestions in the couple posts above. These days I'm using the Quadlock MAG wireless charger, but that means using one of their cases.
Hope this helps everyone.
Cheers!
I made a couple batches of the black cerakote aluminum. See the post directly above yours for more details. There are
a couple left (1 RAM-B without the cable cutout, 1 Quadlock with the cable cutout), but no longer listed on the website. So DM me if interested.
In think you would be surprised how much Porsche owners are willing to pay for a sleek solution. I wished you had continued to develop this for the boxster, I would've been happy to pay for the switch button if that meant getting this for my 986.
I had this in my 996 and absolutely loved it and showed it off to all my 996 buddies.
I've been using
this one
this one
for the last 2 years and been very happy with it. It is the most discreet one, especially when combined with a 90 USB-C cable that connects in the back. See pic below. It seems this particular one is no longer available but I found
this other one
this other one
which should be equivalent. Good luck, I feel your desire to have as little protrusions as possible in the interior.
@yaz996
I recently came across your Hazard Phone Mount and think it's a really elegant solution to a problem I've been trying to rectify for a while now.
I'm interested in getting one and wondered if you post to the United Kingdom? I'm also wondering if it's better to go through the rennclassic link provided in other posts or directly through yourself?
Would really appreciate it if you could let me know the best course of action.
Thanks!
Yeah, ordering directly through rennclassic.com is the best option. Even if you go through me directly it all gets routed through the website. Also currently setup for shipping worldwide.
Tom, I actually use a Pixel 8 myself. Just remember that it doesn't have Magsafe natively, so it needs a case with the embedded metal ring (or one of the stick on rings). In the past I was using this one from Moment:
https://www.shopmoment.com/products/...-J5KgO44KivvgU
Currently I'm using this Quadlock case:
https://www.quadlockcase.com/product...1DLVBJWDgifQ==
Lot's of options out there. Also the Pixel 8 just missed the updated Qi2 standard. Google says it gets up to 12W on Qi chargers, but actual speeds will be lower especially with the use of a case. In my experience there is noticeable heat generated, so I like the ESR chargers with the built-in cooling fan (what they call CryoBoost).

Hope that helps.
Ordered and received - it is a great product. Thanks Yaz for the responses above. Here is what I started with:
And here is the installed ESR QI2 Cryoboost (minus power cable). Man that fan is quiet! I used the Ram B (1") mount with an extender to offset to the left so the SiriusXM receiver would not have to move.
The SiriusXM receiver is used in the 911 and my truck for road trips - vs having a direct wire unit for each vehicle.
Yaz - again - many thanks!

I received my Hazard Mount last week and got round to installing it over the weekend. What a fantastic addition to the car it's been, I absolutely love it!
I went through the process of creating an install video to show others this amazing bit of kit and just how easy it is to install.

Ordered mine yesterday and already on the way!
Wish I had found this a few years ago as I purchased the Rennline version (which is way too low down to look at regularly), have tried various other options, and use a suction cup QuadLock (which hinders visibility and is probably illegal in some states.)
I was about to upgrade to a Double Din receiver when I came across a link I had grabbed around the Hazard Mount and not really looked at last year. This thread has made the case for buying this version, AND really outlines the work Yaz put in to make this a great option. It also makes the cost and hassle of trying to 3d print my own a non-starter!
Double Din was going to be a $1000 or more, a lot more complicated, and I am totally fine with my phone as the display. I actually have a work phone that will likely be put on the Rennline version AND my personal / main phone will go on this one.
My plan is to use the $$$ to upgrade speakers, maybe get an "easy to install" Single Din (my CDR-220 has some display issues), and possibly an amp.
FYI - I have a 2002 C4S with the upgraded stereo (no bose, but I do have the door woofers and separate tweeters, mids in the front and rear.)
I also have a Uniden R7 and on long trips use Waze, and Highway Radar (amazing app and combo that has saved me multiple times). I am looking forward to adding this to the mix.
I also plan to use the mount for my DJI Action Cam during AutoX! It's a pain to mount an action cam anywhere good on these cars in the cabin.
Hey everyone! Is
@yaz996
still selling this item? I really need it since spring is coming up, and I want a reliable phone mount for my car. I reached out through
rennclassic.com
but haven’t gotten any response. Any help would be appreciated!
I already have the Rennline mount down near the lighter, but your video convinced me to take the plunge. Thanks for taking the trouble to make it!
It's great to see talented Porsche community members helping to make our cars better than when they left the factory!
Mine arrived in Scotland within a week of ordering, five min job to fit. Used one plastic trim tool on right of the hazard switch surround (RHD car). Great result and I think great value!
offer both a 17mm and 20mm ball option.
I have been in the QL universe (17mm) for 15 years but now prefer some Mag mounts that use 20mm. I still use my QL Mag Case.
there are ball mount adapters but they just add to the bulk.
these Hazard Mounts are the BEST for a 996. I have one and use the Rennline Mag Mount with it.
Finally got around to installing the mount. The hardest part was carefully removing the original trim without damaging the leather. After that, it was a breezeeverything fit perfectly and looks just like it came from the factory.
I am late to the party but my 17mm ball mount kit will be delivered today . Really looking forward to installing this . I should have ordered the wiring kit , I just wasn't thinking 😕. Oh well for now exterior wiring but I will be ordering the wiring kit in the future . I read thru this entire posting , some really nice finished installs with very positive comments . Thanks for making this .
Question: I am going to order Yaz's wiring harness adapter board . What length USB to Type C cable are you guys using ? So basically you have to go from the bottom of the console , snake it up to his phone mount and pull out some cable to allow pivoting from vertical to horizontal . I was thinking a 30 " or 36 " to be safe . Too long ? I know excess can be coiled/stored but why have excess if not needed . So what length cable did you use ?
My USB connection is a dongle hanging out the passenger side to the right of the radio down low. I simply use a coiled cord and plug it in every time.
when not in use it tucks nicely across my low cup holder out of site.
I just didnt feel like the-routing the wire behind the dash.
