I actually swapped back to stock for a bit as the aftermarket supplied cap somehow blew off.
Leading evidence: 'Replace back' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace back' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Ran the car back to back with and without and honestly it sounds almost the same.

I used an expansion plug with the stock intake so I can pass smog.

Suggestion
But, BMW uses these on their intakes and they document (and other white papers are available) that its used to smooth out airflow pulses to improve the quality of the MAF signal.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

With that in mind, and reviewing a few before/after YT dyno videos that showed no improvement, I think Ill skip this unless my new (Billyboat) exhaust is a big disappointment sound wise.
After so much discussion about the "Orange Cap" mod on RL (mostly long ago), and after all this time, I thought it would be good to do a poll to find whether in the long term people kept or abandoned this simple mod. Please share your experiences with this mod by voting in the poll and posting your experiences with it.

Yeah, I kind of wish I added poll options for the silicone pipe approach that eliminates the connection as it is presumably has the same result. Do you consider it a "keeper" mod, or would you envision going back to original at some point.
Did the mod over 10 years ago. Yes, I would do it again. Sounds great.
Here is a picture. Engine bay is a little dirty thanks to dust from road construction.
Mine is capped. Ran the car back to back with and without and honestly it sounds almost the same. This was after installing BB mufflers so not sure if that's a variable factor. Still leave it capped because why not.
Fwiw, over the years I went from bmc to kn to the oem filter. I didnt notice a difference in sound at any rpm. Didn't notice any difference in performance in the butt dyno either. But as we all know, the butt dyno may not be accurate.
Right know I am using the oem filter. just easier.
I understand. I meant Im utilizing the more flow silicone and drop in BMC. Im not ever saying your getting any significant HP gains but a engine will run more efficiently at higher RPMs when getting dense air. Id like to believe Porsche engineers did design a fine intake system but with cost restrictions and reliability considerations I would also like to believe left something on the table that can be tweaked?
I have a feeling most have gone with the silicone pipe approach. I actually swapped back to stock for a bit as the aftermarket supplied cap somehow blew off. I found a better cap and went back to the silicone pipe and cap. I like it. Can hear more induction noise and its probably psychological but the car feels a touch more responsive. I wouldn't go back to stock. Next thing I would do is couple with with a 997 3.8 airbox.
This looks like a good solution. Are you using the 1 1/2" size in your photo and does expand enough to plug it? I ask because the similar ones I see on Amazon (e.g.
Amazon
Amazon
) look like they only expand to 1 5/8" (I think some of the plugs are closer to 1.75"). Mine would be going on a stock 996.1 airbox, not the 3.8.
My car came with the silicone pipe and cap when I bought it, so I cant comment on the effect on sound. But all I know is, along with the Fister mod the car also came with, it sounds just like the race cars (albeit much less loud) at high rpm. Intoxicating!
Same here. With a stock (quiet) exhaust, the intake mod sounds better, particularly at WOT. I have a Fister hack on my exhaust, so that overrules the sound.
Theres a Boxster mod for this intake as well, and it really sounds great, as the engine is even closer to your ears.
Theres even an air box mod on the 84-89 3.2 Carrera where you drill a couple of holes in the air box for a better sound.
Most stock 911s are pretty quiet from the factory (unless they have PSE), but that flat-6 is glorious and needs to be unleashed a bit.
Why doesn't anyone go the extra step and remove the resonator box in the filter box assembly? Wouldn't that give more volume in the filter box and improve flow?
They do, thats part of the mod. I did as well. I dont think it improves airflow, or at least, this area of design has enough airflow already that adding more does nothing to improve power.
Found the right size plug, stuck it in there and the engine sounds, to my ear, better. Could be that I can hear it better, so Im getting more communication, but it also feels stronger at the low end of the power curve. Butt dyno says 3-5 hp😜
This poll convinced me to give this mod a try, and I have to say that I love it and won't ever switch it back. It is totally benign and silent in normal driving and the only time it comes into play is when you meaningfully put your foot into it, which is exactly what I wanted. When your foot is in it, it sounds amazing without being too loud -- I wouldn't want it any louder or quieter.
yeah i have same airbox with cap. I do have the ipd plenum but I got a 3.4 cable throttle car, yes throttle body had been bored. Now I have headers, fabspeed exhaust, x pipes no cats. What exhaust set up you have.
I just tried it, drove it to and above 4K and decided to put it back. I already have Fister exhaust (gondo hack) so I didn't hear anything that noticeable. (I have a 99 3.4 bored to 3.6 w a 997 3.6 airbox.) IPD plenum awaiting install.

People often do this mod using the cap off of an oil jug. It fits just right.
My 3.4 cable car came with. I took it out to try without. It had a tired OEM exhaust and its very quiet. Im tempted to go back, but Ill try new exhaust first.
There is conflicting info about the resonator function. Some say its to meet low speed exterior noise requirements in Europe. It does make it louder, so thats possible.
But, BMW uses these on their intakes and they document (and other white papers are available) that its used to smooth out airflow pulses to improve the quality of the MAF signal. That seems reasonable too, its a decent amount of trouble Porsche went through to make the car less sporty, and the resonator is located right around the MAF. With that in mind, and reviewing a few before/after YT dyno videos that showed no improvement, I think Ill skip this unless my new (Billyboat) exhaust is a big disappointment sound wise.
You dont get any performance enhancement from it. But you do get a substantially better intake sound from it that you can hear from ~4k rpm to redline. Its an inexpensive mod that does add to the driving experience if you like sound.
