I was seriously entertaining the idea of ordering a set, but after reading how you set up the group buy and getting a promise to fill the order...then seeing all the comments of guys waiting for orders that don't show up, promises made again then not honored....doesn't show me much in terms of a well run business.

Many of you may know that we recently did a group purchase for Dansk exhaust systems. Dansk is an OEM exhaust manufacturer and offer 3 systems to choose from for our 996's: "OE Style", "Sport Exhaust", and the "Super Sound" system- which is the loudest of the three. They can each be heard here:
http://www.jpgroup.dk/images/feed/so...compressed.pdf
The GP was organized through Dayton at departstop.com, and I was very pleased with the transaction. I would recommend him if you found yourself interested in one of these systems.
After listening to the clips an embarrassing number of times, I finally decided on the "Super Sound" which is said to be 10-15% louder than the next level down- the "Sport Exhaust". I had them installed today at a local Porsche independant shop here in San Diego, and all I have to say is one word-
amazing
!
At idle, the exhaust is only slightly louder than stock. Beyond idle, it's a whole different animal- it's definately louder, but far from unbearable (keep in mind I also have the 3.6L engine). There is a burble associated with the exhaust (which can be heard in the sound clip) that is just awesome. There is no noticeable resonance throughout the RPM range, and with the windows up, the cabin noise increases only slightly- windows down is just pure bliss. As for a HP seat of the pants feel- it doesn't feel like it gained much, but it sure doesn't feel like it lost any either.
The car is awakened, and sounds like a true Porsche- more teutonic than muscle. It's not too loud, though significantly louder than the quiet stock exhaust. You shouldn't have a problem with neighbors as long as you "keep your foot out of the carburetor". Overall, I couldn't be happier with the exhaust sound/quality/price of the Dansk.
okay Holiday...I officially HATE YOU!!!!
I have been waiting for my exhaust for over a week now!! And now you are telling me they sound amazing...how am I supposed to sleep now??? Knowing that my super sounds will arrive any day now?
seriously..I am glad to hear that they sound great!!!...can't hardly wait!
Give me a couple of days and I'll see what I can come up with...
Oh, and Nicholaas- don't hate......appreciate. You'll get yours soon and
you will
be happy when you do! But, I've gotta say I'm really suprised you haven't gotten a box yet. Have you been in touch with Dayton for a tracking number?
I drove around all evening enjoying the sound- can't get enough of it. Might I dare say that they sound.............
better
than the almighty PSE!
I called him Yesterday and he said they had a couple of inventory problems...exhausts in the wrong boxes...I rather get the right exhaust later than the wrong ones on time.....I am glad to hear you love the sound....because I was looking for something great!!! And we might have found it...hopefully tomorrow will be my change to hear them roar!!
Holiday - Can you compare the "Super Sound" to the OEM PSE? Is this the version that will be the closest in sound? From the previous posts it sounded like the middle of the road "Sport Exhaust" was the one that was the closest.....
I've yet to hear a PSE system in person- only on sound files. This being said, I can only compare the Dansk to the sound/video clips that are out there. The best video I can compare the sound to is the "Klappentest" of the German guy with the C4S w/PSE driving back and forth on a back road (if anyone who has this could post a link, I'd be grateful). The Dansk is very raspy like the PSE, but more "throaty" than the PSE clips seem to be (sounded like Joe Fabiani there, didn't I?) The true comparison would be having both systems side by side (if anyone has a PSE who would like to get together- shoot me an IM).
I have a new digital video recorder, and will do some drive-by's/in cabin footage this weekend.
Jsaindc- I know it's a matter of principle (Dayton
should
have returned your call by now- period.), but if you are really interested in the exhaust, why not give him a ring? People make mistakes. He told me when I ordered my exhaust that he was extremely short staffed and apologized. Not making excuses for him, but just help the man out and give him a ring!...
Nicolaas- I'll call Dayton today and see if I can help get your exhaust on its way...
We were at the dealer yesterday for a test drive. I mentioned the PSE and that I was considering ordering one, so the salesman got the keys and fired up one that had PSE....
on the showroom floor
! Doors closed, no ventilation, and just lets it rip a couple of times with/without the switch enabled.
I don't think the guy with the desk behind the car was amused.
Thanks Holiday...I called him on Monday or Tuesday and he said I would get them Wednesday or Thursday...don't want to keep on calling, like a little kid wanting his candy....but I WANT MY (EAR) CANDY!!!
Hope they get here today...so I have a nice weekend mod....
Holiday, I will call him back; however, I have called 5 times and left 3 messages. I hope I am not coming off as being a jerk but I don't have the time to keep calling.
Holiday, I have another question for you. I signed up for the Super Sound and I think that is what I am getting. My only concern is that it maybe too loud with the cab. Is it really loud or just a nice sound that is a bit louder? Thanks!
I know what you mean- I left about 3 messages myself and finally caught him in to place my order. Hopefully he'll catch back up with his work soon and take care of everyone else looking to place an order with him.
As for the Super Sound- it's loud- not obnoxious, but loud. I've driven it around for 3 days now, and the tone has mellowed out a bit due to the carbon buildup in the pipes. I don't have any drone in my coupe, but it would be hard to say on a cab. Thinking about how I would present it to you all, I decided this was the best way to guide you:
If you're looking for a sound that is just a little louder than stock (but significant enough to know that it's NOT stock), with a unique Porsche sound, go with the Sport Exhaust.
If you're looking for a more aggressive/Porsche racing sound that makes people turn their heads to see what is coming down the road (without being tiring to the driver or obnoxious to everyone around you) choose the Super Sound.
Neither system has any drone or (audible) resonance in a coupe, and I don't believe that you would have any in a cab either- but I don't know this for sure. The great/unique opportunity you have with buying from Dayton is his satisfaction guarantee. If you are unhappy with the exhaust you choose, just exchange it for the other- win/win.
I just placed my order!
Called Departstop on off chance they were open and Dayton answered! Expressed my concerns over the Super Sound in my Cab and he said it was boarderline. Said the Coupes have much more insulation and his recommendation, based on prior installs with Cabs, was to go with a modified setup for the Cab. It's between the Sport Sound and Super Sound. The cans have a little packing in them whereas on the Super Sounds there is none. Either way though he said if I don't like them - either too low or too loud, that he would swap them out. Very helpful. I figured since it wasn't Sport or Super he might charge more. Started at $995 and I told him the GB was $850 and he said okay, no problem. Will ship them out at the end of next week!
Holiday - if you don't mind - what installation run you? Just for comparison purposes for where I'm at.
Actually Troy, the GB price we were given was $875, so you negotiated yourself an even better deal!
Glad you got in touch with Dayton- So which system did you end up with? It wasn't clear to me.
The local Porsche shop that did the install quoted me $100, but after their head mechanic took over 2 hours doing the install, that $100 turned into $180. I was really disapointed/suprised that it took him
that
long... Next time I might go to All German Auto here in San Diego. They quoted me $185, but they are also a very high class facility. I'd say anymore than that, and you're probably overpaying.
I have to call Dayton Monday and make sure he is not charging me 995...because I emailed him tha the can charge me the rennlist groupbuy price!!! But since they are not so organised........Still didn't ge the exhausts...getting really pissed!!
I saved another $25 off the GB! Awesome!
Thanks for the price info Holiday. I'll give some feedback on what I pay here in Portland.
To tell you the truth, when I was talking to Dayton he sounded very unorganized. Knowledgeable, but unorganized. He didn't know if he had any more Super's in stock, once said yes, then no, then said more are coming this week. I asked about the Cab and he gave his recommendation on one in between. At the end of the call I asked him again exactly what I was getting and he said there were actually three variations and that the one I'm getting is in between with some packing in the cans. If I don't like, exchange for Sport or Super's. After that, he was pretty quick to get off the phone. Once I get them I'll take some pics and see if I can find any more info on them.
Made a quick video Saturday afternoon, but having trouble posting it. It's a .DAT file, and the Rennlist attachment system doesn't allow DAT files to be uploaded. Does anyone know how I might change it to a .WMP or some such file name?
I don't know how to convert the file, but I know that Dave (a.k.a.
Choochas
) on the 997 forum does a lot of this. Maybe you could PM him and ask him for some help.
Okay spoke with (or to) Dayton again this morning,
he said they got new super sounds in last Friday and will send the out today....should get them tomorrow!!!!.......Is is finally going to happen???
I am so glad I am my own boss...so tomorrow is going to be MOD day!! If they really arrive!!
sorry to hear man... if I were you I would go w/ a different one, or I would go to LA & pick it up myself. You dont need to beg them to sell you a muffler ... they need to beg you for business. maybe go w/ Fabspeed maxflo?
I just hope he shipped it when he said he did, and that UPS didn't deliver it yet...always the optimist...but I am losing faith.
I just wished the Fabspeed would have less of a muscle car sound, because I have heard that their quality is great! The sound is just a little to deep and "rumbly" for me.
Nicolaasdb: Sorry to hear about your delay troubles with these guys. It sure takes away from the fun mod experience. Anyway if you dump these guys and start all over, let me know, 'cause I'll be interested in joining a group buy of OEM PSE in the future.
Cheers and hang in there.
Nicolaas- That's ridiculous that you haven't gotten you're system by now. When I set up this group buy, I was told by Dayton that he had more than enough systems in stock (both Sport Exhaust and Super Sound) to fulfill the GB requirements. I was patient with him (and have even
defended
him a few times), but no more...
The sad thing is, I provided Dayton with ALL of the footwork on this one- all he needed to do was to take everyone's credit card info, and ship the exhausts out to the addresses I gave him! If he
didn't
have them in stock as he said he did, he should have at least been honest with you about when you might get the system.
I highly recommend the Dansk system- I couldn't be happier....But I can't say that I recommend doing business with Dayton-
I
certainly won't be doing any more with him (he still owes me money from overcharging me- told me he would take care of it 2 weeks ago
).
Sorry for the trouble you've had...
When I placed my order last Saturday he said he would ship the system out and I'd have it on Thursday or Friday. It arrived on Thursday but I wasn't at my office so UPS left a note. I'll get it from them on Monday. This just isn't going well for you Nicolass.
I'm going to try and get mine installed sometime before Thursday this week. I'll let you know how it sounds and exactly which one he sent me - it was a model in between the Sport and Super.
I was seriously entertaining the idea of ordering a set, but after reading how you set up the group buy and getting a promise to fill the order...then seeing all the comments of guys waiting for orders that don't show up, promises made again then not honored....doesn't show me much in terms of a well run business. I'll look at another brand instead. Word of mouth is the best advertising possible...it can also be a kiss of death. Too bad really. I was really interested.
Dont worry, UPS just delayed the shipment Nickolass, you should have it today.
Hey guys, nickolass didn't order the same time you guys did, so you received your first, thanks for hanging in there Nick.
Chuck, we are ready when you are.
Cheers
Dayton
UPS delivered mine this morning. I gotta say other than not having one phone call returned, everything went really smooth. And I must say, I have been guilty myself of not returning phone calls from paying clients.
The invoice says I got the Sport Exhaust stainless steel setup. I just dropped it off at a local shop for installation along with a couple other items (40K service, replace passenger window regulator). Suppose to have it back on Wednesday. I'll let you know how it sounds.
Jsaindc, did you ever order one or are you still waiting?
I GOT MY PIPES~~~~~ today is a good day!! Took my first flying lesson (got bored, hardly any mods left on the P!) and when I came home..I got my pipes....now I have one exhaust almost off....but I can't get the long bolt out....so I am going to have to do a little search!!
they sound great....not to loud....almost the same as the stock pipes....BUT much much louder, when you step on the gas....you hear the P roar....but when you don't the sound is a little more rumbly, without being muscle car.....I am happy, but deep down inside wished they were a little louder (BUT this is the 18 year old on me talking, the 40 year old says THIS IS THE WAY A PORSCHE SHOULD SOUND!)
Nicolaas- Listen to the exhaust from the outside and you'll change your mind about loudness! There is a minimal resonance level, so it's quiet in the cabin, but outside is a different story- it's loud!
Glad you finally got setup!
I concur with Holiday. Get out of the car and listen from behind while someone else drives your car (oh, the sacrilege!). Even my Rufs sound very pleasing in the car, but when the valet pulls away at very low RPM, it sounds leaps louder and better than stock.
they are loud enough to get pulled over and written a speeding ticket like just happend to me!!! 74 in a 50ml zone....going to be expensive...there goes the discount groupbuy moneysaver!
Wow ... sorry to hear that nicolaas.
Anyway, you guys might remember that I was in the groupbuy for the dansk and then had a brainwave of modding stock mufflers ? Anyway, project done and it sounds GREAT !!!! Its got that grrrrrrrr at low RPMs and goes to a nice loud raspy bark when accelerating. I'm really happy the way the mod turned out - very satisfying !!
Love driving next to walls and in tunnels !! Fantastic sound ! I'll do a comprehensive writeup (took snaps etc) next week after a long weekend camp trip.
Sid
PS: You guys might also know I recently redid the car front ($5k, new clear headlights, new bumper, redid the pain chips, redid the hood and fenders). Guess what ? Some $#$# backed into my new front bumper the other night when I was having dinner in a restaurant !! Left a small 1" crack (thankfully not very noticeble on the lower edge). BUT the @$$h*** didn't even have the courtesy to leave a note with insurance info !! WTF !! Now I've to foot the bill myself @ $500 insurance deductible. Having some idiot break stuff you so carefully planned and executed ... its so annoying !
Girlfriend is telling me its just a car ... so that's my mantra .... "its just a car" ... "its just a car" ...
Nicolaas: Sorry to hear that...sucks! So was it: (a) the lack of a front license plate, (b) obvious speeding, (c) awesome sound from the new pipes or (d) a combo of these, that got you the ticket?
Sids911: Sorry to hear about the idiot smashing your bumper... Blows!. BTW: what sort of mod did you do on the pipes?
PS. And as mentioned before this thread is useless without sound/noise evidence!
Cheers.
It was (b) obvious speeding...BUT the A..hol cop..clocked me when I sped-up a little while overtaking another car...I already took my foot of the gas and slowed down to about 57mph...he clocked me however at 74mph....I will take this one to court....speeding in my eyes is driving a constant speed for at least a mile or so...not for a couple of hundred feet....we will see.
I don't know about the exhaust, don't know if I really like them...I also don't know if departstop gave me the Super sonics or the other shiny ones.....no indication on the exhausts whatsoever!!!
The rumble (like a muscle car....this is not of my liking at all) and they make a muffled sound when going thru the gears...while the soundclip on the dansk site..has a higher less muffled sound...
I know, but maybe I am just to critical...the sound isn't bad.....it is kind off exciting....I just thought it would have been a little less muffled (maybe a little higher pitch) don't know how to explain it.....it is fine I guess....my next P is going to be a Turbo or if enough money a Ferrari and then I will have the exact sound I love and want.....this is fine for now.
It sounds like you're settling. If you're like me, you can try to convince yourself as much as you want, but over time, it'll bother you enough to change it. Maybe not...
Unfortunately, your eyes and the states' laws likely differ pretty substantially. I've had the same thing happen to me in the past and the cop just wrote up the highest speed possible and took off. But, like you are planning, I challenged it in court and got off with just paying a fine and no points. Hopefully, your outcome will be just as positive.
Nicolaas, just return the exhaust and get something else. You are going to drive yourself mad with them over time, particularly if you ever hear the PSEs or the Rufs. Departstop will take them back (I know, a hassle to ship them back). Then, wait until there's a rally or gathering of some sort and listen to the exhausts personally before buying one. You'll be SO much more satisfied that way.
I hate to say this, but I can't resist: what really stinks is that you waited so expectantly for them and now don't even really love them. Stinks.
Nickolaas,
As mentioned, we have a "no hassle" return policy. We will gladly take them back if your not satisfied.
Its really hard to get the understanding of sound over a sound clip on the internet. What ever you decide we will support you. Thanks for hanging in there.
Cheers
Dayton
I am going to take it for another spin today and will get back....thanks Dayton for the support....I guess I got to go with the PSE's......I just thought they would be to "quiet"...but I heard them and they sound great.
Nicolaas- have you had someone do a driveby for you in your car yet? If not- do it!
I've made several videos (idling, driveby's, and cruise) that I have been struggling to post and they sound amazing! The exhaust is actually quiet on the inside (an absolute
plus
to me), while sounding loud, distinct, and aggressive on the outside. Listen to the Super Sound audio clip I gave in the first post for a very good idea of how it sounds (the clip is right on). Also, the exhaust doesn't seem to get
really
aggressive until 3k RPM's and up (where the ECU makes valve? adjustments), which I consider to be a good thing for daily driving around town/through neighborhoods, etc.
These were the selling points for me:
1) Dansk Super Sound's were $875 as opposed to $1400 and up for PSE and others
2) Very solid build coming from an OEM Porsche supplier.
3) One of the lightest exhausts I know of at 13lbs.
4) Sound- I absolutely love it and often get compliments on it.
Just don't want everyone to jump on the PSE bandwagon until they've personally heard this system!
Nicolaasdb,
I have the same problem. Every exhaust I have heard that comes close to the pitch I want is either too loud or too expensive. The best I have found so far is the Tubi that Champion Motorsports imports. I have a link to a video clip at home that I post later today of it on a 997. It sounds killer and is right on the border of being to loud, but could work.
Norbert
Ok, no time for a full writeup yet, but here is a brief photo of the mod. It sounds just perfect to me ! I was worried I'd spend time and money on this and then NOT like it ... glad it worked for me.
1st shows the modded muffler (orig. from 2004 C4S) on the left and the the stock (from 1999 C2) one on the right.
The 2nd pic shows both the modded mufflers side by side.
The observant ones will notice the mounting brackets are different (screw positions). So I was to swap them and all fitted well.
I just came back from taking a spin...and didn't do the drive by yet....have to get my wife out of the house to do so...and she hates to drive the P....
Holiday did your exhausts have a serial number on them?? Or anything that says what they are?? Mine don't have anything on them.
The Dansks have a little less muscle car sound as the fabspeed...and the fabspeeds are nicer build.
And I am very critical....I guess.....because the sound is pretty damn good.....I think I have tog et used to it. Let's wait a couple of days.....and see how I really feel about them.
It seemed to me my Dansk's true sound didn't come out till after I drove it about 150 miles or so. I can definately tell a difference from when I first picked the car up and from when I came home last night - after putting on about 300 miles. It doesn't sound loud to me in the car at all, but I had people turn their heads probably 2 or 3 times when I was over a block away. All had smiles.
I was listening to the wrong sounds!! The exhausts sounds great...just had to get used to them...I didn't that many miles on them..and if you are right Troy..they are only going to sound better.
So now the nasty task of putting miles on my P!!! like 10.000 in the last 6 months wasn't enough!!
Right on Nicolaas! Much like when we drive our own cars and don't get to enjoy the beauty of it passing by from a bystanders viewpoint, we don't get the sound of the great exhaust either. I guess we do get the great satisfaction that we are the driver though as opposed to the bystander.
I am still wondering if I got the Super Sounds Shipped to me......they sound nice, but not loud at all....and I have a cab.....
there are no numbers or any other outside markings..so how can I be sure I got the Super Sounds?? Anybody any ideas?? Anyobdy living in the Orange County area..with Super sounds or the other sports cans?? So i can compare....anytime!
Mine didn't have any markings either. Just what it said on the invoice. The box had a few stickers, but nothing that differentiated between Super and Sport.
The exhaust type is written in black letters on the outside of the box. It's on one of the bottom corners (at least it was on mine). Remember that the terminology Dansk uses on the 3 systems are: "Super Sound", "Sport Exhaust", and "Sport Exhaust OE Style".
They may also be labled by product code:
Super Sound= 96.300S EXP (found out that EXP actually stands for "export" and was designed as a race system- not to be used on the street (legally)... whoops!
)
Sport Exhaust= 96.300S
Sport Exhaust OE Style= 96.330S
Hope this helps...glad to hear everyone else is happy with their exhausts! If you like Nicolaas, I'll meet you half way (I'm in SD) to let you hear the Super Sound. Going out of town tommorow morning, but will be back Jun 8th. Just let me know.
Holiday that would be great....the box mine came in was not an original box....I would love to hear if I got the right ones.....let me know when your back...and if yours are as loud as mine, than I know, otherwise I can always switch them with the deportstop....they are pretty nice guys.
I don't mind driving down the PCH....very nice curvy roads.
okay so I just bought the Dansk sport from Dayton a min ago, since they have not receive any returns from sport version customers, it might be the way to go, super sound might be nicer but since it does not come with the switch this should be the safer way to go for the daily driving, plus most ppl said it sounds just as same as PSE which is good enough for me.
Hopefully I am making the right decision even though it has 30 days money back, i just don't want to go through the hassle. I 'll let you know how it turns out.
and a hassle it is going to be...the shipping back is the easy part!!!
first you got the remove your bumper (for easy access) and jack your P (for easy access) and than fumble and fumble and fumble and fumble to get the 3 bolts off...why the H...didn't they make them accessable??
I took mine to a local shop. They charged me $150 for two hours labor. Not bad at all.
I just called my wife to find out what numbers were on the label that were on the box and she threw it away. Too late to get back!
Dman, that was all I had to go off of. I had the initials "SS" in red ink on my box that were hand written. I don't know if that means Supper or Sport!
when Holiday comes back I am going to meet him and will hear if the sound of his and mine are the same.....150 bucks is completely worth letting someone else do this MOD...IT IS THE DIRTIEST MOD I HAVE DONE ON MY P SOFAR!!!
But kind of cool when it all works out in the end.
so here is the thing guys, Dayton won't ship my stuff out until tomorrow afternoon, I know I ordered sport exhaust, something tells me sport version doesn't sound loud enough, then as Nicolas mentioned the super sound starting to become a musle car which is something I don't want either, I know some ppl said on this forum that the Dansk sport exhaust sounds the closest to"PSE" sound, is that true?
Also from my understanding all mufflers will settle down after few hundred miles of driving, supposely they will get even deeper than they were initially installed. Is that true also?
The bottom line is if the sport version is the one sounds the closest to PSE, it should be fine. Can anyone give me some suggestions?
I just installed my Dansk's last week and have about 300 miles on them. They have definately changed from when I first picked the car up. They sound louder and deeper.
When I ordered from Dayton, he said he was giving me a modified Sport version, that was between the Super and Sport. My invoice says they are Sport. However, the box has "SS" handwritten on it. I checked everywhere for numbers or other identifying marks, but can not find anything. Even made my wife pull a sticker out of the garbage can that I had peeled off to save - but nothing about which style was on it.
I've got a sound clip that I made tonight that's an AVI file. I need to find a way to upload it here. If anyone knows, please let me know.
Overall, my system sounds great. It's got a throtty raspy sound to it and it purrs deep.
it is not really a muscle car sound...it is more troathy..rapsy if you want....not deep and rumbly like a mustang.....but I think you should go with the super sounds.....I don't know if I got them..eventough I definitely ordered them ( I even reminded him-Dayton-several times in several different phone calls over a period of several weeks!! Yes it took a while for me to get them!)
The sound is great, not overwhelming, nothing like the rice burners..it is an expensive sound! But it could be louder (and remember I supposed to have the super sounds!!) so do not get anything less than a Super sound!! If you want loud.
hi guys, I just got the dansk exhaust, I am going to have RUF to put it on for me, have any of you experience with the installation? anything I should know ahead of time, will they fit perfect?
they fit fine...have a little trouble aligning my tips..but this may also be because I have a modified turbo bumper (on a narrow body) and modified tips.....the install went without any trouble (BUT be glad you let the shop do it...because it is the dirtiest install ever!!!)
Guys,
Sorry for the delay in posting this clip of the Tubi system on a 997. Champion Motorsports claims the sound is similar for the 996 as the 997 and 996 use the same types of cats.
Tubi Exhaust clip
Let me know what you guys think. I have talked to them about a group buy and they are open, but the deal they offered isn't quite good enough yet.

WOW ... those tubi sound great !! Though I hope they are a bit softer on lower RPMs. They sound too loud - potentially waking up the entire neighbourhood (meaning your car may get scratched 'accidentally').
Oh god ... I personally think that they sound better than the PSE too. Race car sound without the rumble of the muscle car ...
Tubi's are nice, just waaaaay overpriced. Like I said before, I've had GHL reg/loud, stock, fabspeed. The fabspeed were the BEST by a wide margin! I wish I still had 'em!
There are a couple of tricks.
First, leave the bracket on the motor, flip the two long bolts so the nuts are on top. Makes muffler switching a 1/2 hr job.
Second, pull the rear tires off to RR stock mufflers, no need to pull off the bumper. If you have aftermarket(smaller) you won't even have to do that.
Good luck
