Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My car's a Boxster but maybe one of you 996 guys can help... While enjoying the Georgia roads Saturday night I had an unfortunate occurance. When I jumped on the brakes the pedal went to the flloor and smoke billowed from the left front. I got home, put the car in the air and found a hole in the SS braided brake line. Upon further review I notice the the lines on both sides were installed in such a way as to cause them to rub against the wheel occaisionally. Roock installed them about 3 years ago so I've been riding around on a time bomb ever since. No wonder they're out of business (more or less). So, I got a pair of lines from Brembo NA and went to put them on tonight but I'm not sure how to put them on so they won't ever rub as the wheel travels lock to lock and up and down. The brakes in question are Brembo's 14" Gran Tourismo setup. Does anybody have these and can they describe (or post a picture) how the lines are run? At the least go check your lines to make sure it doesn't happen to you! It might even help if somebody would post a pic showing how the stock lines are run. TIA - Randy PS - it takes a looooong time to stop from 80 mph using only rear brakes!

POST 2Original post

I've avoided the braided lines for this reason. You need to inspect the lines often as they are more "fragile" than the regular rubber lines. Any bends, kinks, rubs, etc. will quickly lead to failure. Can you simply replace with regular lines? How is the other side? Steve

POST 3Original post

Let me get this straight, your pedal went to the floor and smoke billowed out and you drove the car home after that? Put on the lines. Turn the wheels lock to lock and see where they rub. Tie them out of the way with zip ties to keep them clear.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The lines have a banjo fitting on the caliper end that is different from the stock lines, so I can't do that. The other side is just about worn through the SS T_J - it mostly uphill back to my house, and it was on country roads... Well the problem is where to zip tie them. Take the driver's side. At left full lock the line gets bunched between the inner fender and the wheel. If I tie it so that doesn't happen, it gets pulled around the strut at full right lock. Any suggestions or experiences appreciated

POST 5Original post

i don't ever remember SS lines as being more "fragile" than rubber lines. somehow that doesn't make sense that a metal line would be less durable than a rubber hose. anycase, use the extra long zip ties if that helps any.

POST 6Original post

Obviously they're not more fragile, this is just an installation error. I haven't looked at my brake lines in a while, but on most cars there is a restraint that the line passes through to keep it close to the shock body and away from the wheel.
