I found a shop which could change speakers by using resistors to make them work correctly, but every other shop wanted big money to replace everything and bring the car back to to the world of copper wiring.

sorry about all the silly questions... i read somewhere that 2003 model year 996s use MOST system. does it mean i can't simply install an aftermarket audio headunit? could i connect iPod to a factory one? does it have AUX input? (MOST on the 2002+ BMW 7-series makes it impossible to aftermarket anything at all, we are still waiting for iPod kit and there is no AUX on 7er - stupid)

No way to connect an iPod. There are some adapters about to come to market for MOST systems, but apparently they are not quite ready. Upgrade potential is extremely limited on a MOST system. I found a shop which could change speakers by using resistors to make them work correctly, but every other shop wanted big money to replace everything and bring the car back to to the world of copper wiring.

no ipod unless you replace all the HU, amp and wiring. the wiring between amp and spkr is not optical. MOST is between HU, amp, CD changer, PCM. The speaker wires are still copper.

YES - the pre-MOST systems are just like the "regular" systems. You can change items as you like, and add an IPOD into the CD Changer input without too much trouble.

Most is introduced on MY 2003. 99-02 has analog. On analog line, the stock HU can get a auz line in from Becker that can be used for Ipod or XM. There is a phone in connector too that can be used. 03+ is all digital interface.
