Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suspected cause
Yeah I would love to do cams also but Jake said he's probably a year out from making more .
Leading evidence: 'year out' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'year out' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace their stock 996 intake' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Just wondering if anyone has replaced their stock 996 intake with either the X51 or the 997 Carrera S 3.8 intake?

What if any issues did you run into in doing this conversion?

I have a set do X51 intakes and was planning to fit them on one of my 4.0 motors.

FWIW, Slakker is also in the "test stage"(?) of doing 3 @ 4.5L engines, something new.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Brandon Clark at Slakker talks about Hp increases due to intake runners and the effects of various intake plenums. Slakker has videos with some of the commonly asked questions on tuning 996/997 engines in videos. In the one below, go to minute 40.34 and he explains more on Hp increases. If not, look to his other videos detailing what cause/effect modification have on engines.
Perhaps this will answer your questions?

X51 option has different intake manifolds and aluminum runners. They flow more air than the stock intake. I know there is a different AC suction pipe because the X51 intake runner does not have the same recess for the AC suction tube. I have a set do X51 intakes and was planning to fit them on one of my 4.0 motors. Just wondered if anyone else has done this.
My 99 996C4 is currently getting an intake upgrade via Sean Troy/Jake Raby . My original 3.4 was bumped up to a 3.8 Stage 2 aprox 1.5 years ago . Been running great but then Jake told me he has machined adapter plates to allow the 3.8 intake manifolds to bolt to the 3.4 heads . The 3.8 manifolds flow 20 cfm more then the 3.4 manifolds . This is all per Jake's flow bench testing .
Sean said he had to get creative to allow the 996 vacuum brake booster line to attach to the 3.8 manifolds . Not sure what he did but he solved it . Other than that it was a straight bolt on . The engine fires up this afternoon and then begins tuning . My expectations are more power across the board . So my setup is :
1. 3.8 stage 2 engine with Hoffman heads
2. 3.8 intake manifolds
3. GT3 throttle body with IPD plenum
4. 3.8 air filter box
On the exhaust side aftermarket headers feeding into catless x-pipe with aftermarket SS mufflers . Hope to hop in the seat in a day or two .
I have a set of 3.8 Carrera S intakes and a set of X51 intakes. I got a set of adapter for the 3.8 Carrera S intakes from Jake also. I am sourcing a 997.1 vacuum pump and lines for that set up. I am also looking to install the X51 intakes and on one of my other motors. I have a 3.8 I am starting to assemble with Carillo rods, APR studs, Hoffman stage II heads, headers and x-pipe, Fister mufflers. AI am thinking about Cams and then which intake to use.
Yeah I would love to do cams also but Jake said he's probably a year out from making more . He's now making them in house vs outsourcing . My car is a street driver weekend canyon carver . I was happy with it before so will be happy I am sure with the 3.8 intake upgrade .
I talk with Jake every few months as I am local . The amount of stuff he has recently developed but hasn't released yet to the public is mind blowing . I am not at liberty to say but be assured there is a LOT going on at FSI .
I believe he's about to make an announcement on new mods to his rebuilds/conversion next month when the price goes up. He mentioned something to that effect in a recent (3 mo) email exchange.
FWIW: Slakker has developed an 8000rpm package. It has cams, titanium valve springs, seats, and larger valves. IIRC they just did a 3.6 to 4.1 engine with this option and a few others and on a 997 with 419 Hp result. They made a video of their testing and result.

The Hartech motors and Barry Harts entire design philosophy was based on increasing torque.
For my 3.4->3.9 Hartech done at Slakker I went from a stock 258 to 312. Pretty sure the the latest 4.1 Hartech builds at Slakker are getting close to 360lbft.
Larger displacement will increase low end torque. Also, increased airflow will increase power across the rpm range. One of my FSI 4.0 motors dynoed an increase from 320 to 409 hp with the stock cams and Fister modded mufflers.
The "Devil is in the Details". Porsche does not test every engine and release how they come up with a stated Hp-number, just that all 3.x-L engines will be "Y Hp".
Custom Engine rebuilds are a different story, more detail and actual dyno results. The "dyno results" are what sell more build jobs for the top tier shops. You will also notice that some shops, like Slakker, have "options" with "probable range results" for the extra cost.
The difference in dyno results on a 4.1 Slakker is in the "options". A "base" 3.6 >> 4.1 build may have(+/-) around 340 Tq/390Hp, with stock exhaust, etc. As usual, individual engines may vary a bit. Sure, you can have "more Tq" from displacement, and get even more with options. Slakker can produce a NA engine "number results" close to 996TT models, but the difference is added $$$. FWIW, Slakker is also in the "test stage"(?) of doing 3 @ 4.5L engines, something new.
