Chris 996, take it from an old used car man....nobody uses Edmunds book in California.

I have used Edmunds information many times to get lower pricing on cars I have purchased.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Here's a 2002 C2 I'm looking to buy. It has upgraded rims and sport suspension which lowers the car as well as dark tints. Not sold on the extras...I like the C2 in its basic form with no modifications !! Any opinions ??
The car looks nice. I really like the ride height and I think the wheels look good. How many miles on the clock? What options are on the car? What are they asking for it? Is it a CPO car? The additional info will enable us to give you better, more specific feedback.
Its a 2002 with 22900 miles. It also comes with the following options:
Design Package
Sport seats
18" Carerra wheels
Advanced technique Package
Porsche stability management
Its a Porsche Approved Certified Preowned Vehicle coming from the largest Porsche dealer in the city.
It is fully under waranty.
The bottom line price on this car is set at $61000
What do you think ? It seems a little high in price based on some of the other postings on this forum ! The guy over at the dealership suggested I keep in mind they also wholesale a lot of cars to independent dealers who sell "high end" vehicles, none of these would make it pass the Porsche Pre Approved Certified 100 point inspection etc...justifying the higher price for this particular vehicle and all preowned cars they sell that pass the rigurous inspection and certification process.
Sounds justified !? Too high in price ?
Price is very high. Check out the link below from Autotrader. One car is $72K all of the others are less than $60K and the average is $50,826. They should have room to move down, IMO. I paid $65K 11 months ago for my '04 with 6,450 miles on the clock.
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/search...or=&x=107&y=12
For a C2 coupe, that is WAY overpriced. You could buy a C4 Cab for that much money, and probably less. Also, does that include the CPO cost? Porsche pays PCNA $1,595 for the certification warranty.
I paid 62k for my 2004 last month with 30 miles on it. It was CPO, but still new and had never been titled. Just a dealer demo left over that they never moved. I would say 61 with 20k miles is way too high based on the one I bought with no miles at all. At the same time markets are different every where. Looks like a great car. I would try and get them down in the mid 50's
I realized that no matter how clean the car looks, & how the condition is... most of the joy lies in the driving performance.. they all drive differently, I would base my 50% of my decision on the engine feel. How does it drive?
I'm on my way to the dealership again to test drive the car one more time and negotiate the price some more. I'll let you guys know more info this evening.
Thanks for all the great feedback..! This forum is GREAT !!!!!!
Well.....I lost the purchase. I went into the dealership for the second time. Test drove the car, went to pick up my wife so she could see the car....when I came back 15 minutes later someone else was testing the car. They came back...I took the car out for a final drive with my wife. Told the sales guy I was going for a coffee at the Starbucks around the corner and I would come back within the next hour. 20 minutes later..my cell phone rings.....the sales guy from the dealership informs me the car was sold !!! The other guy cut a cheque on the spot while I was having my coffee....I didn't even know he was there !!!!
I learned a hard lesson today about "squeezing the trigger" !!!! oh well !!!
I'll be back at it tomorrow morning !!!
Well, that depends on how much you wanted the car. Each market and each car is unique. Based on how quickly the car sold, the Dealer priced the car appropriately. I saw a low mileage '02 996 on a Dealer's lot that was absolutely perfect. The body had no scratches, dings or even swirls, and the interior of the car was spotless. It literally looked like a new car. Cars like that command a premium. On the other hand I've seen '02 996s that were beat to hell, and the Dealers were asking low $50s for those cars, and of course they weren't CPO.
If you see a car that is in pristine condition and is equipped the way you want, don't hesitate to make an offer. If it's reasonable and the car has been on the Dealer's lot for a few weeks, he'll probably accept it.
There you go - we laugh at the prices at the dealers (about 6 months ago I drove a MY02 cab with 25k asking $76k!), but clearly they sell them, or the prices wouldn't be so high.
61k? Good grief.
>>>>There you go - we laugh at the prices at the dealers (about 6 months ago I drove a MY02 cab with 25k asking $76k!), but clearly they sell them, or the prices wouldn't be so high.<<<<
Yup. I guess the proof is in the pudding, so to speak.
However, my friend just purchased a '02 C4S with 11k miles for $59000 from a dealer with CPO, so I'd say everybody here was on the mark about it being overpriced.
remeber ppl in rennlist are PRO on buying cars.
u need a little time and patient to find your perfect 996.
it took me 10 month to get my 996, yet only took me 3 days to triggle the "check engine light"
(forget to turn off the engine when filling gas).
agree on the comments, if you wanted to spend $61 on a used 02, u better off buy a new 997!
Definitely worked out for you. You won't mind paying a bit more for one that is perfect, but this one was too much with that many miles no matter the condition. Seriously if you go to porcshe.com and do a used car search there is a 2005 997 in seal gray with CPO, 9k miles for 62,900. That is a much better deal. MUCH BETTER. Hell even if you have it shipped for 2k it is a better deal than a 996 with 20k miles for 61k.
Wow......there's a HUGE detail I forgot to mention !!!!
I'm located in Toronto, Canada !!!!
If you guys want to feel my pain, got to the Porsche.ca website and do a search on a pre-owned 911.
I checked the Porsche.com site and did a search within the New York vicinity and found wwwaaaaaayy too many cars....all at prices that made the deals I came across here seem overpriced...to say the least!!!
I totally see where everyone is coming from. $60 000 can get you a lot of car in the US, unfortunately I guess the markets are totally different and price comparisons can't be made. The price difference is as high as $20K if not more!
Sorry I forgot to include this obviously very important detail.
I'll have to bite the bullet and pay the extra money and come back to this forum and take part in all the great topics offered......and stay away from anything relating to cost on vehicles as it doesn't apply to me !!!!
What type of import duties would you have to pay on a car from south of the border?
Was that Canadian dollars or U.S. dollars?
Chris 996, take it from an old used car man....nobody uses Edmunds book in California. Only Kelly Blue Book. In fact, does anyone use Edmunds at all??? Winebago's maybe???
Was it P.T. Barnum who said: "There's a sucker born every minute". That's what makes a car salesman and a dealer LAFF(sic) all the way to the bank.
Tom L
2002 C2
I did a search on this forum about importing vehicles from the US. It seems a little complicated. I'll look into it a little more.
The price was in US dollars. I converted it over from $70K Canadian
used
4 years old
Carrera2
$61,000?
hahahaha walk. you can get a nice Carrera4S or something like that - one guy was looking at a fulkly loaded 4s for $65,000 asking price
Really ?? $65K US....where ??? not in Canada ? you mean in the US right !?
I really appreciate all the great advice I've been given here.
I'm not surprised that those who live in the US would find it overpriced. You guys have a great selection of pre-owned Porsches at great prices. I looked online with the pre-owned search on the Porsche.com website and checked with the autotrader and found a lot of amazing cars in the $60K range.
On the other hand those who live here in Canada ! I don't understand ? I have found over 20 to 30 Porsche C2's all 2002/03 from Toronto to Vancouver and nearly ALL of them are in the $75+ Canadian (approx.$63 US) price range !!!
I've looked with Porsche Canada and with private sellers. Nothing !!
2003 C4's are selling for over $80K Canadian ($70K US).
Am I missing something here ??
I don't mean to question anyone here, but this is confusing me !
I'm trying to educate myself on used Porsche prices so I can go out there and make an informed purchase, but I'm getting a jaded perception of what a pre-owned Porsche should REALLY cost !!
Anyway...I'd like to thank everyone again for all the great input. I'm really looking forward to being able to post about my Porsche and not about trying to find one !! Lowered suspension....upgraded wheels....aero kits....wow!!!
I can't sleep at night !!! this is killing me !!!
MUST...GET...A....911.....SOON...!!! my sanity depends on it !!! lol
yes, some other guy in some thread, maybe it was in the 997 forum he was asking about a used 997 carrera with 9,000 miles with light options vs. a 996 Carrera4S with 9,000 miles and fully loaded
all I'm saying is there's lots of options - take your time, do some research, and observe the market a bit - the right car will come along for the right price sooner or later.
What does it take to legalize an american vehicle? not a whole lot, just clear it with customs and get it OOP'd
I think the higher prices in canada likely has to do with the fact that we're a much smaller market - what, 35 million americans, vs like 14million canadians? Think about it, we're a little short in the supply vs demand category.
as well the cars you're looking at are porsche certified - immediately add some cost to that vehicle.
Here's a car at the urban garage in West Vancouver, BC - a 2002 C4 cabrio
http://www.theurbangarage.com/cdetails.asp?CID={649A6FF3-0DE7-4318-A743-3ECA76A2D81D}&Category=TUGN
$89,900 canadian
Here's a 911 C4 cabrio at park place ltd in bellevue WA....

$69950.00 US
So, it's a matter fo hunting for bargains. Personally, it seems as though you're sort of settling on this car. Don't. better to wait a few months and be driven up the wall than to drive a car for a few months and make concessions, then spot the car of your dreams.
I mean that's just my opinion. you've been waiting how long? surely you can wait a little longer
aside from that, if you don't mind going with the 2001 3.4L andolder front end style, you can save about 10 grand....
well here we go....
i'm browsing local sites for you
found a few 996's at Wessach - first rate dealership, and i believe the exclusive supplier of RUF parts to north america - or at least it was, at least the west coast now...
http://www.weissach.com/auto-details.asp?autoID=259

now those are both tiptronic but they give you an idea
to compare the 2002 cabrios like above, here

77,900 asking
Again, dunno if you're looking for a cabrio, but you just need to hunt. the internet is your friend
Hi Tom,
As you know from being an "old used car man" people overpay all the time for cars. I have used Edmunds information many times to get lower pricing on cars I have purchased. In fact I have shared Edmunds with many of my friends and they have saved thousands. If you don't ask for a lower price you will never get it. When you can show something in print it helps to get the price you want. People can use what ever they want, but by using Edmunds they save money. See the example below.
Kelly Blue Book on a 2002 911 stock 22000 miles (Priced stock no options)
Condition Value Excellent $49,600 Good $47,135 Fair $43,885
Edmunds on a 2002 911 stock 22000 miles (Priced stock no options)
Total Excellent $43,305 Good $40,471 Fair $38,771
Key point: Sometimes you get what you ask for. Use Edmunds and ask for less. If they don't like Edmunds buy from some one else. This is america
Tom you included the quote that best sums it up.
Was it P.T. Barnum who said: "There's a sucker born every minute". That's what makes a car salesman and a dealer LAFF(sic) all the way to the bank.
I wish the best outcome for anyone buying a car.
I agree, I've only been in the market for a few weeks. I'm trying to make this happen for the summer, hence the hurry.
I hear you....shouldn't rush it !
good luck, gave you some real world comparos on some cabrios - weissach undercut the other two significantly. Just keep shopping. then go on edmunds when you find that car and throw it in their face, and drive a hard bargain at the dealership. and if you buy a car out here, I'll gladly take delivery for you
