When I first considered a Porsche, I thought for sure I was gonna get a 993, since, afterall it was the last air-cooled version, looks so cool, and is destined to be a classic someday (I think).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anytime the RMS posts wear you down, cruise the 993 board and be grateful. Check out the oil consumption, valve, valve seat, and secondary air injection woes and you will feel pretty good about your 996. I am not saying I am happy with the RMS situation, but compared with the 993 issues, we are in great shape.
Dell: Don't be so harsh on his first post. Hey at least he's on the right track. He could have started a thread on "How do I know if I have RMS?" or something tedious like that.
I thought that the " Real Porsches" were bullet proof.? Maybe someone needs to tell some of those guys at the 993 board that the true soul of a Porsche is to be driven... Not broken down with a motor taken down by carbon.I drive mine 365 days a year, mine has NEVER let me down, I will keep my so called fake Porsche
**EDIT** I do like the 993's it most of the owners I cant stand.I was never like this until i went over to check out the 993 section , and I saw all the 996 bashing. It's funny My best, longest, friend in the world has the nicest 993 hand downs, its not because of the car its because he is a true Porsche Fan.
Dell - compared to you, I'm still a newbie. However, I've been reading long enough to enjoy many of your posts, but you can be a little abrasive sometimes to us newer members.
I think this guy is also tired of RMS threads if I read his post properly. He sounds proud of the 996s and I personally welcome some more of that speak. If I read one more person starting a thread about RMS paranoia, I think I'll smash my computer screen. Plus, I'm sure you realize how many 993 owners call 996 owners arrogant non purists, so I'm glad we have one more guy supporting our passion for the 996.
Got nothing but love for my fellow 996ers. I concur on my abrasiveness but it pertains to my lack of tolerance for newbies that come around with no intro, no pics, and post something that I can only imagine will include a $47,000 post by Bob
or have to hear all the RMS bitchin. Just drive the car and love it I say.
I think I need my grey goose martini early tonight. I get a bit cranky when the alcohol is lacking
Amen to that! The 356, 911, & 964 guys don't act this way. I don't know why they carry on like that, not only here but on every car board. Sometimes it embarrasses me to be a Porsche owner......sad
jlc986 hits the nail on the head. My bullet proof SC motor dropped a cylinder at Laguna Seca last year two months after I had the transmission rebuilt. I still love the car and fellow air cooled owners don't even flinch when I describe what happened. I spent more on the rebuilds than I did on the car purchase.
heh that made me laugh.
I, too, have noticed the 993 superiority complex. I've been lurking around for years reading various message boards and it's the same everywhere.
When I first considered a Porsche, I thought for sure I was gonna get a 993, since, afterall it was the last air-cooled version, looks so cool, and is destined to be a classic someday (I think).
I always used to think the 996's looked crappy- lacking character and seeming so "un-911-like".
Eventually, though, I began really liking the 996's looks, and believe it or not: I now much prefer the narrow body 996 to the wide-bodied 993s and 996s. Once I drove one, there was no question that this car was for me and I bought one a couple days later. I couldn't be happier- and I certainly don't regret not joining the fraternity of elitest 993ers.
I love my 996 C2, and I also like the look of 964 and 993. I once went onto the 993 board and I find it sad that a majority of people likes to step on the 996. Why not just enjoy what you have. peace.
I am with Dell on this one. Some may think Dell's post was a bit abrassive but I think newbies who don't introduce themselves or post pictures are plain rude. I mean, do these guys enter a room full of strangers and proceed by telling everybody "my car has a RMS leak" or "I need new wheels"? Intoduce yourself first -- it is common (or maybe not so common) courtesy.
Welcome to the Age of the Internet. While it may be common courtesy to do the formal introduction, many people will lurk for a while - long enough that by the time of their first post, they don't consider themselves "new" and the idea to post an intro just doesn't come to mind. I know I have done that before on forums where a formal introduction is very rare. It just depends, and you certainly aren't going to encourage new members by bashing those who don't "follow the rules".
I don't really agree with this, although the 996s are newer in terms of age, many many of our cars have just as many miles if not more than the average 993. In fact I would say that as far as daily drivers go there are many more DD 996s than 993s. If this is true, I think it makes sense that there arent many "new" problems that are going to creep up with age per se since the things that come up with age typically also come up with mileage.
As always, YMMV.

This is funny because I used to not like watercool either due to my loyalty for the aircooled 911's. I was about to buy a 993 myself when searching for the 996 but I've stumbled upon a few articles which indicated how superior the 996's were at the track and that the 993's owners were ditching their 993's for a 996 in order to keep up with the pack. The articles was also saying how bummed out the 993 owners were when they knew their car was no longer keeping up and they even played around with the thought of putting a 996 engine in a 993!! I knew exactly what I wanted after those articles and I live not to regret the decision made although the 993 is a beautiful car. I know I will get back with the aircool 911's eventually but I know better not to bash watercooled porsches. Better yet, a 996'GT3 and a 993 RS clubsport will look perfect in my garage with a 964 RSA for daily d...lol.
Hahaha - I love the posts on the 993 board that say "I tried a 996, couldn't stand it and sold it in 2 weeks and bought a 993"
Dell, you're cracking me up with the First Post... the poor bastard is probably so traumatized he'll never be back.
" 993 section , and I saw all the 996 bashing."
Sometimes it is the character of the person. Some people just need to say something negative about someone or something else to make themselves feel better.
Dell - make mine a double only with Beefeater. Owners of one model have bashed other models for years. If you want to see a bunch of defensive guys, go say something nasty about a 928 on their forum and see what happens
There are guys on 356 that think that the 911 is not a real Porsche after all.
Some people prefer the 993 - hey, what's not to like. Clearly the esthetics of the 993 were more popular hence the look-alike 997.
If you are a trackie then the 996 is faster. Period. But, so what, every new model of 911 has been faster than the one before. Still there are some who think that the 993 was the start of the end of "true Porsches". Too easy to drive blah blah.
SO WHAT! People are entitled to their opinions. PCAR thinks the older car is superior and he's entitled to think that way. I won't debate him. I have had a lot of 911s over the years and each one had been a progression forward (in my opinion). Still, WHO CARES? Maybe ten years from now I'll be saying that the 996 GT3 was the best of the best and the newer cars are overweight Grand Touring machines targeting yuppies and the Mercedes SL crowd. Will anyone care? THEY SHOULDN'T.
One last factoid. The more you know about any car, the more you know about its weaknesses. Porsches attract a fairly technical crowd and consequently we post every misadventure. we don't talk about rust through on the Mercedes SL because water accumulates on the trunk. Given the choice of an RMS replacement or rust, I know which weakness I will pick. No cars are perfect and IMHO Porsches are more perfect than most.
Regards,
Pass me the olives, Dell.
"can't we all just get along" ;-)
I love pretty much every Porsche ever built. They all have their strenghts, weaknesses, quirks, and attributes. I just enjoy them all for what they are. I am a 996 owner.
I agree Dell, both are great but different cars >>> and.....both have strengths AND Weaknesses.
Obviously, we all have our preferences and vote with our wallets. But, you gotta love the "tools" with the
"my car is great and yours is trash"
mindset.
I actually would have bought a 993 but I need a car that can be a daily driver and hang out in 100 degree weather while stuck in daily trafic jams and not catch on fire. As well it needs to be driven through snow storms and deal with salt.
Hence the water cooled engine and awd. I love the 993 and I am not to impressed with the 997 so Someday I will be able to afford to have both but probably be able to get a 964 before that happens.
In my perfect world I would have a 356, a 993, and a 996GT3 next to my current 996CAB. Now that would be a garage I could love
Oh the choices. I just love ANY Porsche!
Ray, your signature is pefect except I would change it from "happiness is two Porsches" to "happiness is just owning a Porsche, any Porsche, or as many as possible!"
Personally I am striving for my last post of the 356, 993, GT3, and CAB. My wife already ok'ed the installation of a 4-post lift (or two) to turn the 2 car garage into a 3 or 4 car garage
You would hope that as Porsche continues the evolution of the 911, that each new model would be better than the prior.
So, you would hope that the 997 is an improvement over the 996, and the 996 was an improvement over the 993.
The big difference between the 993 and future models is the air cooled characteristics that the 993 has.
Never hear of it Doug. You would think after spending my entire life in Texas (grade school, UT for my Bachelor's as well as grad school) I would have heard of this stuff. Have a pic of it???
Gotta admit though, it would be HARD to pull me away from my Grey Goose!
Dell: It happened to me with Ultimat Vodka from Poland. Probably the finest Vodka I've ever tried (not that I'm a connossieur or anything like that).
Have you tried it yet?
You will not be dissapointed, as I'm enjoying some of it right now. If for some reason you don't find it (which I doubt considering all the high end cars around your hood's Costco
) PM me an address and I'll snail-mail you a 50ml sample bottle. Not affiliated with them, I just want to share the good things in life
haha all over this board is cayman bashing - EVERY forum -
Being that I hang out lots in the 928 forum, it is a great car, albeit with weaknesses - for example the fact that it's not really as pure a sports car as a 911, arguably - while it does just about match the numbers to the 911 performance wise, it feels like a GT - because it's supposed to.
I dunno, at the end of the day you get all different porsche owners together, and they'll all get along and admire each other's cars. 914-4's will be respected by 996 owners, 356 owners will give props to 911's, etc
it's just stupid, all the small arguments. My thing will be the 928, because it's sort of my style - big, bold, powerful, and comfortable - and accesible in terms of price points.
Who's bashing the Cayman? I've heard nothing but good things about it.
It's a strange feeling going back and forth from my 996 to my 964 now. It's like going from an F-16 to a Bi-plane - each has it's charms, but very different machines.
I think the 964 is the easier drive - the steering is lighter, getting in and out is easier, clutch and shifter is light.
Most people who own porsches could afford air OR water (or both!), so it's a trip watching the bashing that goes on. I would have to say the 964 crowd is the most easy going and relaxed about it all - the 964 is a gem, undervalued and positively bitchin' (...yes, I just said "bitchin'")
sad.
i drove the cayman and wished my 996 cab had its rigidty.
i almost bought a 993 c4s but decided it was too spartan compared to the 996. VERY happy with my purchase.
it's a great car... what do you want, handling and rigidity or the 911's funny engine placement?
A porsche by any other name would still smell just as sweet. I wonder what these cars will be worth down the road.
