Reported fix
I ended up replacing the passenger door latch and the passenger door handle microswitch and that fixed the problem.

I resoldered them and it passed the wiggle test but still no central locking and the same "failed to synchronize" fault code.

Another symptom I'm experiencing is sometimes the interior lights on the door don't turn off unless I slam the passenger door shut, even if I only used the driver's door.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This may be totally irrelevant to your problem but I just had to fix the locks on mine because central locking didn't work.
Hi, new member here.
My 2000 996 C2 auto doesn't lock with the fob and when I use the key it wouldn't lock the passenger side.
What's wrong with it and how can I fix it? I'm new to this whole 911 thing.
Thanks
Edit: sometimes (I'm not sure what the exact conditions are) when I close the driver's door, the car attempts to lock, fails to do so and honks twice.

Hi, and welcome
The failure to lock and double honk, sound like symptoms of a failing micro switch.
check out KrazyKs post in this thread (post #2) and see if any of what he describes aligns with what youre experiencing.

Earlier this year I was having similar issues where the lock would cycle and the car would honk twice, but the door wouldnt lock. In my case the passenger window also wouldnt drop when I opened the door and the car had a tendency to cycle the lock and double honk at the least opportune moments while I was driving (such as in traffic or once when I was behind a police car at a stop light).
I ended up replacing the passenger door latch and the passenger door handle microswitch and that fixed the problem.
These alarm systems are complicated but they store diagnostic trouble codes when something goes wrong. Buy a scan tool (or find a friend with one) that can read out the codes for the alarm system. There's a lot of ways these can fail and most codes will lead to the symptom you have. At this point it's a little like asking what it will take to fix a check engine light without knowing any other details.
This may be totally irrelevant to your problem but I just had to fix the locks on mine because central locking didn't work. It had codes for a bad door lock actuator on the passenger side. They're like $650 from Porsche so naturally I bought two on Amazon for $60 each and both of them set codes for incorrect door lock actuator. I found mine would lock and unlock if you wiggled it. The wiring to the alarm module under the driver seat tested OK so I took the door lock actuator apart and looked closely at the circuit board for the lock motor. It had 3-4 cracked solder joints for the 9 pin connector where the door lock actuator connects to the door harness. I resoldered them and it passed the wiggle test but still no central locking and the same "failed to synchronize" fault code. I took the driver's door lock apart too and found the same condition with cracked solder joints, resoldered them and now everything works!
If you read the codes and need direction from there let me know and I can get you some diagnostic instructions
