Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey all, I managed to find my way back on rennlist again! ( I had a 944 some 5 years back when i was in grad school.) I found a fantastic deal, very low $20Ks, on an 2002 C4s and just had to trade my e46 M3 for it. Full leather, PCM nav, heated/lumbar seats etc. I'll grab some pics when i get home (driving 600miles to get it... ZOMG NO IMS GUARDIAN!1!1!11), but couple questions in the meanwhile: 1) Where's the engine number stamped on the block? Car has 109K on it, 60K on the motor replaced in 06 by Porsche. I'd like to know what they put in it. 2) Does the turn signal stalk need lubrication? It feels super flimsy, almost feels like im gonna break something when i flip it on/off 3) Bubbles on the cluster gauge faces - doesn't look like a common issue, any suggestions for replacement?

POST 2Original post

Former e46 M3 owner here. The car was very capable with a sharp engine but ultimately I prefer the 996. Anyway, the engine number is at the bottom edge of the "oil pan" on the drivers side. Turn signal stalk does indeed feel flimsy, but not many feel as good as BMWs... On the other hand the steering and brakes feel better on the Porsche.

POST 3Original post

Welcome back. I haven't really noticed a flimsy feel to my turn signal stalk, but I've never owned a BWW either... The bubbles on the gauge faces are not a common issue. I wonder if your car has aftermarket gauge faces that weren't applied properly. Are they white gauge faces?

They seem tanish to me, match the interior

POST 5Original post

Welcome back! I agree with you on the turn signal stalks. I have an E90 M3 and it feels a lot more solid than my 996 in that respect.

POST 7Original post

I think I know what you mean about the turn signal stalk.....did seem that way when I first got mine. But now that I am more "used" to it, I don't notice it anymore.

POST 8Original post

Wecome back. Here is a picture to help locate the engine number.

X45 Instrument dials matching interior color Mystery solved on the cluster gauges

POST 10Original post

I was thinking they might be cheap aftermarket gauge overlays, but it doesn't sound like that is the case.

I like the de-badged rear end too. I've considered this modification also.

POST 15Original post

I also really like the red stripe across the back between the tail lights on the C4. My Carrera badge was removed during the paint polishing, it hasn't gone back on yet, I have the original matt black one, a silver "titanium" one, not sure what I really want to do, I've thought to spray the matt black one to dark gun-metal color.
