Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I left the key in the ignition of my 2004 996.2 from Saturday until today (Monday). The key was in the OFF position and the engine wasnt running, but the battery was completely drained. Is that normal on a 996 if the key is left inserted for a couple of days, or could it indicate a problem such as the ignition switch, alarm/immobilizer system, or another parasitic draw? Interested to hear if other owners have experienced this.

POST 2Original post

If u didnt pull the key out some and hear the clunk then yes its normal. The clunk is the contactor pulling back and disconnecting the key on circuits.

Thanks. Sometimes when i pull the key out the instrument cluster lights stay on, even after closing the door. Ive had the car only 2 months, still trying to figure out the qwerks.

POST 4Original post

Totally normal. It's s good idea to remind anyone working on your vehicle of this quirk.

POST 5Original post

The interior lights and dash in these cars r controlled by the immobilizer under the drivers seat. I dont think i have seen an accurate discription for the various conditions for it to shut down the car. It seems much more random with my mk2 electronics then the mk1. Many times i will use the key to lock, then unlock my car and it will kill the interiior lights. What i do know is u always have to pull the key and make sure the doors r fully shut.

POST 6Original post

I would also recommend always locking the car so it hibernates. I am pretty bad about locking cars - the 996 is always locked to avoid issues.
