No M96 in my TT, but the visor problem is really creeping me out.

I checked with my local dealer after reading about all of these visor issues.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well after 12 years I finally bit the bullet and traded my 1999 996 Cab 6 sp that I bought new on a 2012 997 S Cab. Picked it up on Friday. All I can say is WOW!
Ok so this is a 996 forum so what about 12 years and 50000 miles with my 996 Silver Cab.
Early on RMS Seal replaced at 6000 miles never leaked since. Coolant bottle and glove box hinge. All Under warranty. Replaced visors. Heater core sprung a leak two years ago. Brakes pads last year. Lots of tires.
All in All it's been a great car. I take good care of my cars and change oil once a year. Store it in the winters here in MN. When I drive I drive hard so I have not babyed it. YMMV
Steve From Minnesota
sounds like the natural progression. as others have stated, it is good to hear the good news stories about our cars. seems as though the minority with problems generate the majority of bad press. hope the 997 is just as good. have fun.
The 996 visor issue directly effects resale value. So far Porsche is refusing to admit there is a problem.
I'm afraid to drive mine, but hear some company is working in an upgraded titanium replacement visor.
jake states that it needs to be replaced at 50k miles.... But the visor Gaurdian will warn you if you need it done sooner, and the warranty can cover the costs if it does go sooner or later.... Man, the marketing machine is well oiled!
I don't know what you guys are talking about - I've never heard of visors failing.
But I did replace my glovebox with an upgraded carbon fiber model. Titanium hinges and all.
To the OP. Congrads on the new ride. Hopefully your 997 treats you as well as the 996.
You guys can laugh and make light of it all you want but visor failure on the 996 is a VERY real issue. I've heard that at least 50% of 996s will be affected. BTW, thanks barn/Steve for this statistic. If you do experience this failure your 996 may not even be worth scrap prices, that's how bad the visor failure is.
Everyone who has experienced this dreaded visor failure needs to immediately contact the NHTS and promptly bring a class action suit against Porsche.
But most importantly, DO NOT drive your 996 until you have replaced both visors with the upgraded aftermarket visors.
I had to replace the drivers side visor mirror cover on my wife's Boxster a couple of years ago. I did both sides while I was at it. So far so good. We cross our fingers every time she drives it.
Please report on what you like better and what not with the new car. I'd be interested in your perspective. Enjoy!
I bet you guys all this visor issue is funny. We let me tell you this fall sitting in my driveway I open the visor cover to look in the mirror and the cover comes off in my hand. I was so upset I almost didn't drive the car. I manage to get the car to the dealer for it's annual state inspection and dealer cost to replace was $300. I was also told the passenger side was about to fail and needed replaced. $600 for visors!
Upon the advice of the service advisor suncoast has them for like $75 with lights or $25 without.
You can make fun of the visor problem if you want, but it is much more serious and more likely to affect 996 owners than IMS problems.
I don't believe this visor issue is real. I think it's the product of scaremongering by those who wish to sell upgraded visors.
I demand to see the statistics on the failure rate of visors, or any documented case of visor failure. I expect statistically valid sampling plans. All the cases presented so far are anecdotal and are improperly documented. (And don't try to convince me otherwise, because I will discount or ignore any data you present)
Oh, and you are all idiots.
Congratulations on the new ride! :-)
I bought my '04 this past summer having seen all the internet hype on the bloody visor issue in advance and I think y'all are crazy, just enjoy the car!
I'm still waiting for the final testing and legal to be worked out in hopes of a pre-sale of the replacement unit. Unfortunately I fall in that 50% - the C2 with 70k miles has yet to have the visor fail, but the C4S with 26k miles has experienced this dreaded and soon to be well known failure. So now the 50% failure rate has been substantiated and based on my one experience we now know that lower mileage and lack of use contributes to this problem. I am wondering if I should replace the OEM visor on the C2 before it fails, just for peace of mind?
You certainly don't want to be out on the road enjoying your Porsche, far from home and experience a problematic visor(SVF) failure, perhaps even a DVF(double visor failure)...well we have a solution soon to be available to Rennlisters.
Why isn't this a sticky? I never knew this to be a problem with the car. Thank God for Rennlist.
Is there a DIY solution to this problem? Is a special hinge puller required?
Should I just wait until my Targa top has to be replaced and just change the visors at the same time? What other work should I do 'while I'm in there'? I'm thinking I should re-wrap the leather on the stearing wheel. I imagine that it's easier to access with the entire top removed.
I would be sure to replace the visors when you replace your; water pump,AOS, IMSB, RMS,engine mounts, coolant tank, etc. but be sure to do it before any issues might occur UNLESS you really don't care about your Porsche.
I'm thinking that I'll probably replace my visor and visor arm assembly at the same time to save some money at the dealership. Mine is out of warranty, so this will be another OOP expense. BTW, I removed the seat belt warning stickers from the visor earlier this year. I wonder if I'll need to replace those prior to the visor replacement. Anyone have similar concerns?
This whole visor thread thing has me worried. My driver's side mirror flap failed about a year ago. Then a few weeks ago the visor Tilt/Flap/Control Assembly failed giving me an uncontrollable AOA. Should I just scrap the car for parts?
I'm considering using Corvette replacement parts. Is there an aftermarket kit for this swap?
I had this same failure in my 2007 Honda Civic EX Coupe about two years ago.
Is there a direct correllation between the two failures. Am I overthrusting the visors?
My '99 does not have the extending flap inside the visor like the '97 Chrysler LHS. Can I use that visor instead? Anyone done this before?
Srevefrom MN,
Congrats on your new 997S cab. It is great that you had one of the 46% that owned a 996 without the visor failure.
Not to be an alarmist but, be aware that there have already been premature GLOVE BOX HINGE FAILURES
on some 2012 997 S Cabs. While these early failures have been covered by warranty it would be best to get extended dealer coverage. We can only hope the aftermarket starts on a fix soon so that we won't be forced to sell these cars as salvage in a few years...
The ceramic visor hinge upgrade has a dynamic load capacity of 2200 lbs which some say should alleviate the problem, with splash oiling further increasing longevity.
Drove my 996 today and I was so worried about a potential visor failure that I couldn't enjoy the drive.
Of course it doesn't help that the visor is in plain view and can easily be seen while driving. The whole drive I kept looking up at the visor to make sure that it was OK.
Wow, that does not sound good!!! I sincerely hope you shut the engine down immediately after hearing the telltale squeaking of the failing visor/s.
IMHO I'd replace both visors before restarting your car. Do not even attempt to crank the engine before raplacing the visors.
GOOD LUCK!!!
P.S. - Don't forget to post pics of the old visor/s after replacing them.
When running the Tail of the Dragon a few weeks ago in my Coupe, I sensed substantially slower times when running with the visors up vs a few passes with the visors down. I believe the Visor Down position provides a lower CG and thus more traction on the nose of the car. However, I believe the reverse effect would be true for running a Cabriolet with the top down and Visor Up position since the visors would then provide more down force. Can any Cab owner confirm this? I considered removing the visors completely in order to lighten the car but this would violate the Stock Class rules at Driver's Education events. Perhaps I can lobby PCA Club Racing for an NV996 (no visors) sub-Class.
Thoughts?
Thanks DreamCarrera - luckily I am already used to not using my radio for fear that I might not hear the dreaded warning sounds of imminent catastrophic failure. I wish the PPI had not discovered the visor failure on the C4S as in this case ignorance would have been bliss. And, the 3rd party warranty company will not cover the repair. I just might park it until the guardian is available.
I checked with my local dealer after reading about all of these visor issues.
The service manager told me that visor issues seem to be most prevalent with 996's that are infrequently driven, and he recommends visor replacement if/when clutch replacement is required.
Sounds good to me.
