All my remote transmitters have failed so I use the key in the door all the time (got to get some new remotes one of these days).
Leading evidence: 'Use key in the door all the time (got' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace rear brake bulb, adding insult' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Can I use the valet key to get the trunk release to un-lock?

PS-- The mechanic charged me $50 to replace a rear brake bulb, adding insult to injury!
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It wasn't my fault, really!
I brought the car to my mechanic to have my Extreme Contact DWS tires installed, along with a wheel allignment. Great. After the work was done, the mechanic left the car in the lot, but not before poping the trunk (cable release), locking the car with the remote, then, dumping the keys into the trunk.
I only have the valet key (only have one remote key), and the car alarm isn't on, but the trunk release is locked. Can I use the valet key to get the trunk release to un-lock?
I hope the answer is simple, like turn the ignition on and off 3 times, and not "take the wheel off and fish around for the trunk release cable"!

So without the remote, there is no sequence to follow with the valet key to get the hood release lever to un-lock?
Yeah, $5 for the bulb is fine. $45 to install it means I wont be going back to them. Half hour of "labor"to do a 2 minute bulb replacement, after I spent over $400. They must be hurting for funds!
Sorry, not that I've read about.
If you can't release the trunk with the regular trunk lever and the doors/trunk/gas are all locked, and you can't turn on the ignition and press the unlock switch on your dash on an off several times to unlock the lock...
I've read about someone who jimmied the hood latch with a very thin but firm piece of plastic, like a dash trim install tool... but I wouldn't futz around with that method unless you know what you're doing.
If you have a PST2 or PIWIS (dealer or shop) you might be able to connect to the alarm module and unlock the locks, provided your valet key turns the ACC voltage on.
You should contest that charge, especially after they locked your only working keys in the trunk!
Does your valet key in the ACC position allow you to press the lock/unlock switch on the dash? It might not without a transponder in it. If the lock switch works, try doing that several times lock/unlock, lock/unlock, lock/unlock.
Then try to pull the trunk release lever.
I'll try this. The car is unlocked, and starts and runs with the valet key. So the alarm isn't activated. It's just the damned hood release lever locked.
I'll also try locking and un-locking the door with the key. There must be some way to tell the car "hey, it's me, let me into the trunk"!?
I'm going to complain about the extra bulb labor charge. Total BS. They figure I'm a rich guy with a Porsche, so why not charge another $45? Maybe these guys are mechanics AND lawyers?
If I lock my car with the remote and then use the valet key to open the car by the door
I can still accuate the switch on the doorsill to open the trunk.
Why is the cable locked on yours?
its a manual release.... there is no lock on the cable, sounds like you have a mechanical issue or not pulling hard enough?.... Am I missing something?
Does your engine lid unlock?
Yes, the engine lid cable pulls without issue. The trunk release is locked as if the door was closed (Porsche only lets you release the hood with the driver's door opened, for safety I guess).
I'll give all these suggestions a try when I get home tonight, thanks.
To clarify, IS there an emergency cable release for pre-02 manual cable release cars?
Unless it's over-engineered, like all German cars!? What if the cable release breaks, or the cable snaps, etc? There's got to be an emergency release cable!
These are from a 1999 car.
For all of you thieves who may be reading this out there... clear as mud right?
PICS REMOVED!!!, PM me if you need to see them.
I think I know where to look for the release - thanks. Hopefully I can see it through the hole for the side marker! Stick a hangar in there, pull, done!
+1 on having another person push up/down on the badge while the other person pulls on the hood lever in the car.
Yes these car have alternative pulls.... for both the front hood and engine lid. I moved them to a more convenient location for occasions like you mention.
The security system on a 2000 does lock the trunk release lever. However unlocking the door manually with the keys unlocks my lever. All my remote transmitters have failed so I use the key in the door all the time (got to get some new remotes one of these days). Sometimes I have to hold the key inthe unlock position a little longer to get the latch to unlock as occasionally the doors will unlock but not the trunk lock. So unless the valet key is sensed by the lock mechanism this should work.
Next time tell the $50 bulb mechanic you think the trunk light stays on when the lid is clased because it keeps burning the plastic cover and burning out. Then ask him to sit in the trunk and get a look at whats going on........
