changed 2 Maf sensors, cleaned the throttle body and idle control valve once and that's it folks!

I'm starting to wonder if i'm playing with fire and that some huge repair bill is around the corner.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm a 997 owner and wanted to get the opinion of a few 996 guys on long term reliability. My C2S is 5 years old and I haven't had one problem with it. I'm starting to wonder if i'm playing with fire and that some huge repair bill is around the corner. Do any of you 996 guys regret keeping your car past the 5 year mark?
the car seem to be reliable but there are a couple of potential issues that could cost the engine life.
Apparently a relatively small number of occurence but with any older car you will have similar risks.
I don't think those engine self destruct considering we have a couple of cars on the forum with well above 100k miles without major issues. Seems like the more miles you drive them the less trouble.
My 12 year old 996 has been with me going on its 6 year of ownership, and have had very minor repairs to date. I've only driven 22k miles and am currently at 57k miles on my Porsche. I wouldn't sweat owning a 997 at all.
about 87000 miles on my '99.
I have changed the transmission (noisy pinion bearing and gear pop out from 1st and 2nd)
As far as the engine and related components... changed 2 Maf sensors, cleaned the throttle body and idle control valve once and that's it folks!
Reliable great car for me.
Pete
yea we ALL regret our cars because they are old
some of us regret having even older cars....
you should sell your car and buy something new...the regrets are too painful.........thankfully the $50k drop in value over the first 2 years isn't anything any of US regret......
what the hell?
+1 Ed.
A car is a repairable system. Just because some of your 5-6 year wear out items are due doesn't mean it's time to get rid of it.
IMO maintenance years 5-10 are way cheaper than your depreciation during free warranty repair years 1-5.
OH man...I bought a new car once thinking I was tired of always having to fix my car and deal with the headaches.....
damn car was in the shop WAY more than my old car!!
regrets??
I regret buying a new car!
I've had my '99 Cab for nearly 4 years now and it has been unbelievably reliable. I change the oil once a year and the only other things have been a couple of bulbs and a new MAF sensor to correct a hunting idle. The most complicated thing I've done is change the rear springs, as the originals had sagged a bit (if I wasn't so picky I'd still be driving on the originals).
Outside of a Toyota I used to have this is one of the most reliable cars I've owned.
117k on my C4 Cab and all it has needed is basic maintenance, including two water pumps, belts, spark plug tubes, etc... solid as a rock. The engine is going to come out over the holidays for an IMS upgrade, chain ramps, o2 sensors, etc. Very reliable. Having said all that, the 996 must be attended to carefully, ie if there is a noise or issue, don't try to drive through it! The margin for error is razor thin.
157,000 on my 2002... daily driver. Just maintenance and regular repairs (water pump, alternator, starter and clutch) VERY reliable. Just jumped into a 2005 997 a week ago. Really love both cars, so different, so the same. The 996 is sold to an enthusiast here on rennlist. couldn't be better.
Bought my 996 new in 2001. I now have approx 90km on the clock with at least 15k at DE events.
I have replaced a MAF and have had the RMS new and improved fix...that's it for failed parts. EU Autowerks looks after the car spring/fall and in between and every single maintenance procedure is followed without fail. Spring 2012 visit will have a long list of longevity projects.
Please don't ask about consumables!
Only had my 99 since May of this year. So far, did an oil change when I first got it, put on about 4K miles and another oil change last week. Also replaced light bulbs. Getting it ready for storage soon. Will be performing the 60K maintenance (about 10k overdue) in the spring.
Loving the car!!
My 2002 C4S has about 107K miles on the clock. It has been very reliable. Sure, it has had parts wear out and need replacement, but what car wouldn't at 107K?
