Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Note that I'd replaced the water pump about a year ago.
Leading evidence: 'Replace water pump about a year ago' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect lines or it could be quite dangerous' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
If you remove the compressor, you need to bleed off the pressure before disconnecting the lines or it could be quite dangerous.

Yesterday I started to replace the water pump again but when I took the airbox out I noticed that part of the outer lip of the Air Compressor pulley had sheared off and the belt was significantly worn on that outer edge.

Suggestion
I'd remove the compressor at last resort unless you want to run without it.
Test pulley and shaft bearing as it should rotate smoothly

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A few weeks ago I was driving and suddenly felt what I thought was the clutch go out. The RPM's would rise but I could not increase speed much above 20-30 MPH. I had previous symptoms of what I thought was slipping and with ~72k miles on the car I expected the clutch would need replacement soon. I was able to nurse it home and also discovered that the water pump was leaking as well. Note that I'd replaced the water pump about a year ago. HMMM.
Yesterday I started to replace the water pump again but when I took the airbox out I noticed that part of the outer lip of the Air Compressor pulley had sheared off and the belt was significantly worn on that outer edge. Would it be plausible that the AC Compressor went out which caused the water pump to go?
Questions:
Anyone have an AC Compressor DIY replacement?
How many shop hours are expected for that replacement?
What about bypassing the AC Compressor...I read that there is a smaller belt which can be used...I could potentially remove the AC Compressor and other components to save weight. Does this provide any appreciable HP gains? Will this throw a CEL? Other pros/cons?
AC compressors freewheel when they are not engaged. If you remove the belt you can test the pulley and shaft bearing as it should rotate smoothly. If you remove the compressor, you need to bleed off the pressure before disconnecting the lines or it could be quite dangerous. As me...
Does your AC work? I'd remove the compressor at last resort unless you want to run without it. It could be a big deal to install another one, refill and purge the lines. It's all left intact in major service as well as motor replacement.
Info I pulled from another tread regarding the smaller (AC Delete) belt is the part # 996 102 151 65. NAPA has that as a Gates belt part number 060760.
Because I'm planning on using the RSS Lightweight Underdrive pulley that belt is even smaller. The part # for that Gates belt is K060747.
Humm interesting thread about the untrue pulley ... Please post the DIY info and your feedback on the part.
I was thinking about it but wonder how easy it is to unscrew the main pulley screw, does this require some way to prevent it from spinning or engaging a gear is enough to,torque it ?
Bypassing the air compressor seems a bit overkill ...
The RSS Pulley kit comes with a bolt that screws into the block. This secures the pulley, disabling it from spinning so that it can be unbolted.
Many of the mods done to the car are a bit overkill...this would just be the latest...hahaha....
On my 996 my mechanic person removed the AC compressor and the belt that fits is the 996 cup car belt as the cup car had no compressor either.
If you need an AC compressor I have one I could sell you. It is from a 3 year old new crate motor and was never used. It would be worth half the cost at Suncoast right?
Alex, I have looked at Pelican and they want $480 for compressor and clutch. So if we are talking in the $250 range, I'll call my mechanic and make sure he is cool with this.
I appreciate the offer / help!
Hal
