Suspected cause · Original poster
Dropping the motor is probably the best bet or at least removing the transmission to gain access.
Leading evidence: 'best bet or at least removing the transmission' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'best bet or at least removing the transmission' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean mass air flow sensor' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I know that everyone says that the AOS on a car with a tip cannot be removed/replaced from the top, but has anyone actually attempted it?

The relays are a whole lot easier to replace than the AOS.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have searched and I am sure this topic has been beat to death. I have the
P1124 and P1126 codes and I'm replacing my AOS to fix them as it is cracked.
My main question: If I choose to lower the motor and let it rest on the subframe, do I still have to remove the DS Intake? Will that give me enough room to access it?
Any help appreciated.
Jake
I remember getting those codes for the relays for the air injection system. Are you sure it's a bad AOS? The relays are a whole lot easier to replace than the AOS.
Worked out good I removed the DS intake for access, broke one vacuum line that goes to the vacuum resevoir. The orig AOS was in really bad shape and rubber accordian boot had a hole in it. Also did a semi-coolant flush as well.
Cleaned out the intake and TB while in there and car is not smoking anymore at start up.
So far so good, have 30 miles on it w/o any codes, they would usually come back after about 5-10 miles. Gonna drive her tomorrow if its nice out and set readiness for inspection.
I know that everyone says that the AOS on a car with a tip cannot be removed/replaced from the top, but has anyone actually attempted it? Just curious... I would love to do my AOS from the top!
I have never messed with a tip, but from what I can assume is that the bell housing is much bigger and wider than the manual transmission. I would believe that you could still access the AOS from the top, but getting to the lower accordion hose and the two 10 mm may be impossible from underneath. Dropping the motor is probably the best bet or at least removing the transmission to gain access. Although I would not remove that trans w/o a lift and trans jack, I cannot imagine how much it weighs.
I would assume it's for people who drive their cars in "extreme conditions" aka track cars. Probably doing many laps around a track for many hours at high speeds where temps get really hot.. I would imagine doing this often would signifcantly decrease the longevity of an OEM AOS.
I think that the bellows can be reached- I can see it readily enough with the car in the air. The 2 10mm are the issue. Anyone have a diagram from PET? I would just as soon not pull everything if I don't have to...
I'm not sure of access from the top on a TIP but don't see why it can't be done just like a manual. From the bottom, the tranny really needs to be removed. Lower the tranny/engine a little, drop the tranny and it's right there.
