Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It seems that even though the 2002+ motors are better about avoiding starvation under hard cornering, they don't like being filled high.
Leading evidence: 'Fill high' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill high' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

and just to clarify, no oil under the car, everything is running smooth...
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi first post...
Anyway, so I drove my 2002 996 quite hard... Did not track it, just flying through a few roundabouts, up and down a hill or tow. Stopped the car.. came back, and drove off... First thought was that the engine was shot, huge dark oil cloud behind the car, but went away almost immediately. but came back upon start up, but then went away completely....
But after doing a similar day of driving, it happened again..
So is the air oil separator giving up, or is it something else?
Car drives great, oil level at 90%
any ideas?
AOS failure will continue to smoke. It helps to let the car idle a bit before shut down after hard driving to avoid smoke on next start up. Keeping the oil level lower helps too.
If it is the AOS it will smoke continuously like a crop duster.... You have something else going on... I suspect there will be a puddle of oil in your garage this evening....
It seems that even though the 2002+ motors are better about avoiding starvation under hard cornering, they don't like being filled high. There will probably be some small amount of residual smoke for a little while but it will clear. They don't seem to do it if filled to about halfway between the marks or a tad lower than that, I've seen it before, wasn't anything to worry about.
Yah the engine isn't just pumping oil like pouring milk on breakfast cereal. Things get pretty violent in there. Had a high school mgb that would cook muffler and resonator and smoke after slowing down from top end.
Have a similar effect (big white smoke puff) after some track sessions. Talk to the mechanic. Suggested running a bit lower on oil.
Nothing to be worried about. It happens. A few seconds at high RPMs clear this up.

My car does this after hard driving too.
Interestingly, the new 997 that I was driving last week in Europe with roughly 5,000 miles on the odometer did the same thing. It smelled like burning rubber when I stopped, and it chugged a puff of smoke when I started it up again.
It's normal.
Same thing happened to me too...
I topped up the oil for a track day and it blew by the AOS and recycled into the throttle body, down the front straight when shifting from third to fourth. With all the residual oil in the TB and plenum, I continued to get puffs of smoke on startup, and during the two successive sessions that day... down the front stretch, shifting third to fourth.
Like the others said, try running with a little less oil (one or two bars above the minimum).
