Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

How difficult is it to replace a header gasket on a 996 which is leaking. I went to a muffler shop and ask them if they could replace a gasket on the driver side header which was leaking. These are stainless steel headers and I could hear a leak coming out of the header. Unless the header is cracked which I hope it's not. The shop quoted me $300 labor and $22 for the gasket. I checked with the parts house, and the price of the gasket was $4.50. I believe $300 is excessive. I would do it myself, what I don't have a lift. Please advise me if this seems excessive.

POST 2Original post

don't need a lift just a jack and some jack stands...

POST 3Original post

Im doing this job at the moment and it is without a doubt the most annoying job ive ever tackled. In theory a very simple job. The problem is the bolts get really rusty and finding a socket to get a good hold of the bolt is difficult. When you do manage to get a socket on the head, when you apply pressure they usually shear off inside the cylinder head... Massive pain in the... Definately worth getting fresh nuts welded to the old ones before attempting to remove the old ones.

POST 4Original post

Just spray the bolts down with PB Blaster the nite before. I thought it was a fairly easy job. I used Fabspeed copper gaskets.

POST 5Original post

Go to Wal-Mart or most Autoparts stores and pickup a can of PB Blaster rust penetrant. Spray liberally on all the bolts, studs, etc, that you need to remove. Let sit overnight, then do the next day. It will save you most if not all the broken bolts, which in the long run will say time and money. Even if you are having someone else do it this is a good thing to do since it will save them time and hassle and potentially charging you more $$$ I would also recommend replacing either all the hardware or atleast the well rusted ones to make the job easier next time.
