Leading evidence: 'Replace same' (1 discussions report resolution; 0 report an unsuccessful attempt). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'maf and i've purchased a bosch unit' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace same' (1 discussions). For that action, 1 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. The most frequently reported fix is 'Replace same', supported by resolution reports in 1 discussions. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Reported cause
It ran perfectly, indicating the issue was with the MAF and I've purchased a Bosch unit from Pelican parts for $198.

However, in my case it was the vent line just to the left of the throttle body; part no.

I cleaned MAF and throttle body just prior to the rodent issue.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I went ahead and took the car on a roadtrip after fixing the rodent electrical issue.
about 500 miles total to and from SoCal.
On the way there, got these 2 codes twice. Both times while idling or in stop/go traffic.
Here is the freeze frame from when the CEL was triggered. Didnt notice anything irregular or running rough. CEL came on, checked them, reset it. No other issues.
I cleaned MAF and throttle body just prior to the rodent issue. Can try it again.
Ideas?

Anyone with experience with the Bremi brand MAF sensor on Pelicanparts.com? At half the cost of the Bosch, its tempting. Brand has a 4 star rating, but no reviews on the MAF.
Needing to replace the MAF once a while is normal with these cars. Consider it as a normal weer item. I replaced mine after 40.000 miles when I noticed the reference voltage with ignition on was 1.06V. The car did not rev that smooth anymore especially at WOT in lower rev range.
Most of the times cleaning is just a temporary fix. If it was a long time ago you got a new one, replace it. Many times It will make your car drive as new compared to driving with the old one.
My car (with 51,000 miles on the odometer) also produced a P0507 code and the car ran rough (not unlike one with fouled plugs...). Interesting comment to treat it as a normal wear item. I read elsewhere to unplug the MAF and run the car. It ran perfectly, indicating the issue was with the MAF and I've purchased a Bosch unit from Pelican parts for $198. The local Porsche dealership in Virginia Beach wanted...wait for it....$875 for the MAF!!!! I'll report back once it's installed.

I had the same exact codes on my 2001 while sitting in traffic on a hot day. I found that the large hose that goes from the air box to the engine was loose after the dealer did some work on the engine. I tightened the hose clamp and have not seen the code in the last 3k mi. So it could be something simple.
I had this error as well, intermittently, for several months. First I tried cleaning the MAF with no improvement, then I ordered a new MAF because MAF failure or vacuum leak seems to be the most common cause.
However, in my case it was the vent line just to the left of the throttle body; part no. 99611012953.
If your symptoms follow mine, at first I was just getting an occasional error code with no change in drivability. But as time progressed I was getting hard-start issues, especially when the engine was warm, and through a bunch of Rennlist searching figured out that was the culprit. FWIW, I replaced that valve last February and the problem has not return. Good luck in sorting it. On the plus side, this is literally the easiest repair you can do on a 996, other than perhaps the MAF sensor. I think it took me about 7 minutes to replace.
New Bosch MAF from Pelican Parts arrived today. It is exactly the same part as OE (part numbers correspond on the unit). No CEL and car runs as it should.
Hi gcthree - I'm similar issues - same codes, started while car was idling. I have recently installed the IPD plenum and GT3 throttle body so lots of potential culprits. I did have the MAF out and re-ran the e-gas recalibration to no avail.
Were you able to get your issue resolved?
I've got this same intermittent issue - P1130/P1128. Reset codes, usually takes a tank or two of driving until they reappear.
This first started after I installed the Fister mufflers, but they assured me that there's nothing downstream of the cats that could cause this.
I'm looking at maybe bad MAF (but why would it be intermittent?). a vacuum leak or vent line as described above (could be flexing open perhaps).
On the MAF front, I haven't looked at one of these in a while, but in the VW TDI world we could graph the MAF expected vs actual values, which would give clear evidence of a MAF problem.
Can Durametric do that? I haven't dug that deep into the tool yet.
Yes, Durametric will read and log the MAF sensor. I would start there and get some actual values for the sensor, and not just idling. First thing, remove it and clean with some MAF sensor cleaner.
