Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

45 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I guess will be lurking here as well as the 944 Turbo forum... 1999 C4 with a new engine in fall of 2007. Arena red on Savannah. PPI was clean and we agreed to all the details yesterday and I sent the deposit. Now I just have to figure out if I am going to pick the car up or have it shipped from Texas to Ottawa. I am leaning towards picking it up because the cost is over $2K to have it shipped and I can fly down on points. Thoughts?

POST 2Original post

Long drive from Texas my firend. Lots of hyw driving and by the time you get back to Ottawa you may see some serious "Stone Chips". Call TFX International based in Toronto, they have can ship your P car in an enclosed truck. Not sure how much from Texas.

POST 3Original post

drive it, just dont tailgate anyone.. if you are worried put some blue tape on the nose drive it, drive it Beautiful looking - enjoy in good health

POST 4Original post

I am in the drive it camp, it'll be one hell of a story.

POST 5Original post

Congrats!! she's a beauty! If you have the time drive it back, bond with it!! enjoy! Already has some nice mods I see!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Kinda a factor of life... I expect to drive the car year round....

POST 7Original post

I drove my 2000 C2 Cab from Milwaukee, WI to Washingtion DC, go for it! Just picked-up a 2002 C2 Cab, I was ready to fly to CA, but found one local. Good luck. Chris

POST 8Original post

Congrats! Drive it...don't be one of those guys that saves the car for the next owner. It's yours! Enjoy it!

POST 9Original post

Congrats on the new car! I think I will be there in a few days myself. You mentioned that the car has a new engine... How did you know? Would you happen to know where the serial number is and it's supposed to match the VIN of the car, right? Lastly, when they did the PPI, did they do it at the place where you bought it or was the car taken to a 3rd party location? I forgot to ask, when they did the PPI, did they do an engine leak down test? And my vote... DRIVE IT. It will be a priceless experience you will cherish forever. As for stone chips on the way back, check out this pic from the 987 thread... https://rennlist.com/forums/987-foru...er-s-home.html

POST 10Original post

Phil, Whats your take on this? DRIVE IT!! Enjoy it!

wrap it up and hide it in a corner with a tag that reads "Do Not Open.... even at Christmas!"

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a copy the invoice from the dealer for the intallation. Seller was excellent and provided all invoices for the last 6 years for me to review. Do not know where to look, sorry. Looking at the invoice the engine serial does not match the VIN. No, given the engine was replaced in October 2007. Had it taken to a local Porsche dealer.

POST 13Original post

VIN and engine serial numbers do not match. There is a date code in the engine serial number that if one knew how to decode it one could tell if the engine newer (or older) than the car. I had the info on how to decode the engine serial number but don't recall how and not sure where I picked up the info now. But someone else wanted to know how to tell when engine made and I found it somewhere, somehow. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 14Original post

I'm surprised there have been no offers for someone to drive it for Fergus! I agree - you should drive it. I drove mine back from Detroit. Stone chips be damned - it's a 10 year old car that's meant to be driven!

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 7005274

And driven like it should be driven! I'm in the drive-it camp! I don't understand when people don't drive their cars, wasting their youth, wasting the car's youth, wasting time.

Put tape on the nose, ship it, and put it in the garage. Great looking Carerra 4 - love Arena. Great color on the coupe. Enjoy it!!

POST 17Original post

Congrats and welcome to 996 ownership. The car looks great. Drive it home - it's a great way to get to know the car.

POST 18Original post

Drive it. Stone chips or not, who cares. (easy for ME to say!!) These cars were meant to be driven. If you're concerned about stone chips on the nose, just drive it in reverse.

POST 19Original post

My car has a ton of chips already. Definitely not worried about wasting it, my youth, or the car's youth as someone said. If you have the time, the drive should be fun. If you can't be away from work that long then have it shipped. I would say damage is more likely letting car shippers have it. At least catastrophic, drop-it-off-the-trailer damage.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thinking pick up on Friday, though the border on Monday, back at work Tuesday. Total time lost 2.5 days at most - but maybe I can create a business trip around it

POST 22Original post

I have vacation time...buy the ticket (airplane type) and I will drive it home for you ! BTW I saw the driver of the yellow Boxster in concert

nice. drive safely!

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Clarification... in a couple of weeks... travelling on business until next Friday.

POST 25Original post

Approx. 20hrs drive in your first Porsche for the first time. All the best and make sure you have all your paper work or custom will not let you through.

POST 26Original post

The drive should not be too bad for you, actually you should enjoy it much of the way especially in a 996... Last week I drove a Jeep Sahara from Dallas TX to Albany NY with completely full of household stuff in the back. The drive was not so pleasant but I did it in 2 days, first day took 15 hours to Cincinnati OH and the 2nd day in 10 hours to Albany NY. The weather was not very cooperative and it was raining most of the way, making the drive very tiring. I hope you will get good weather on your way to Canada. Good luck, be safe and make sure to bring a V1 with you, you will definitely need it, mine saved me couple of times too even in a 4x4... Cheers,

In college a bunch of us rented a caddy and drove from Albany to Houston in 19 hours... Non stop. I remember racing some dude in Taurus SHO across some flat state. He gave up after 110. Ahh, the stupidity of teenagers.

POST 28Original post

It has the carrera iii 997 18" wheel. Make sure the proper spacer is installed (5 mm on the front) because offset diff between 996 and 997. Drive it and enjoy it!

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No problem there.... Title and bill of sale gets it out of the country (faxed to the border 72 hours ahead of time) and with the dealer's printout of the Campaign letter I should be able to get it into Canada. Not from Canada - illegal to own one up here

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 7008349

Legal in BC and a few other provinces. I moved from Ottawa to Victoria a few years ago. Now that it's legal for me to own one (and I do), I find I rarely need it out here. The number of speed traps is significantly lower out here than in Ontario!

Congrats! Looks great! I agree you might want to get a bra or put some tape on the front for that long drive back....

POST 32Original post

Congrats, Fergus! I don't get the tape on the bumper thing...the implication seems to be that he'll somehow get more rock chips on the 2000 mile drive home than he will in the next 2000 miles he drives the car. How does one 2000 mile drive cause more chips than twenty 100 mile drives?

POST 33Original post

i vote for DRIVE IT. Bond with it, learn how it works. and ENJOY it. P-cars were made to drive! Congrats. it looks beautiful. roy

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 7009211

Yeah, I don't get that either. I can see doing it if you're buying a new car and are planning to have a clear bra installed, but otherwise it seems a little silly.

POST 35Original post

Why a 4WD? Are you going to drive it much in the winter? Seems like more parts to break if you aren't really going to use it.

POST 37Original post

We'll swap stories later. My friend and I are flying to Houston on Saturday the 31st to pickup my 997 and drive it back to Woodstock, Ontario. The plan is to cross the border on Monday morning and be back to work on Tuesday. Here's to having a fun and safe trip.

POST 38Original post

Congrats Fergus!!! Your recall letter is in the mail.

POST 39 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Many thanks to Rob in WA for the recall letter... When I buy new (some day), you're getting my business!

POST 40Original post

Quotes source post: 7008349

Congrats on the car! Drive it of course. Also, recall clearance letter not required at border as customs has no interest in it. Make sure your local border crossing accepts faxed documents as some don't. I faxed them title, bill of sale and a letter stating what I was doing. Call US customs ahead of time and see what they require. Have fun!

POST 41Original post

Congrats! My vote is to drive it... what a better way to learn about your car... I had a similar choice when I picked up mine last year and chose to drive it even though the distance was just a small fraction of yours... but I almost ran out of gas on the trip home because I was unfamiliar with the gauges and thought that the oil pressure gauge was the gas gauge (I don't see so good without glasses...) I was way too excited about finally owning one, that I really didn't care to look at everything (I spend more time learning the gauges in a rental car than I did with my brand-new-to-me pcar)... Congrats and welcome to the board! Rudy

POST 42 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well work and US Border Service has gotten in the way of my best laid plan to drive it back... Work - am travelling all week next week and have to go to Sweden and France the week after. Window to fly down and get back got compressed to 4 days. US Border Services - they want orginal documents at the borders near me and that adds a couple of days to the whole process, which makes it a 5 day trip. When you add up all the costs - the difference between trucking it and driving it is less than $200.... and I have dedicated auto transporter who is handling all the paperwork as well. Now to pick snow tires and winter wheels

Congrat's and plan a trip to Toronto so you can show it off. Details here: https://rennlist.com/forums/rennlist...-saturday.html With all wheel drive the 417 is gonna be a snap in the winter. I bet you'll be looking like this guy...

Wow, how did you find Fergus' picture?!?

POST 45Original post

Quotes source post: 7005221

Here's how to tell when the engine was made, taken from the "Porsche 996- The Essential Companion", page 599 "The engine code is located on the engine block, on the right side of the crankcase, next to the fan housing...." hmmmm... what fan housing???? Must be an error, carried over from the 993... Anyway, the code is stamped onto the crankcase and looks like this: M96/30 663 09588 (taken from my replacement engine) where, the last 5 numbers are the serial number of the specific engine the 6th number from the right is the year of production (3=2003) the 7th number from the right is "6", the code for a normally aspirated engine the 8th number from the right is "6", the code for the number of cylinders Note, the code for the year of production is not linear, at least for the earlier years: W = 2008 X = 2009 Y = 2000 1 = 2001 2 = 2002 etc. Hope this is helpful. ...Rickker
