Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

In some parts of the world aftermarket SC's are prohibited w/o exception in pollution controlled vehicles, and cars are inspected yearly.
Leading evidence: 'Inspect yearly' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'other way around' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect yearly' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The DME was replaced, of course, and it cost big bucks, but what a cool way to embarrass any Corvette in town.

Suggestion
One would need a fabricator to do the work and you would have to replace most of the engine electronics.

Suggestion
More $$ because regardless if you are e-gas already or not your DME version can't run the newer systems that are in the 3.8.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
My buddy hit somehting last night asn Porsche is telling him that the engine is trash and will need to be replaced.
This is a 2002 Targa, Is there a larger engine he can upgrade to while he is at it ?
I was thinking you can put a 3.8 in the car, but I could be wrong I really live over in the aircooled world , so Let me know
Also what was the cost of the two the replacement 3.6 and the 3.8
Thanks
Not easy to do. One would need a fabricator to do the work and you would have to replace most of the engine electronics. $$$$. Not really recommended. 3.4 --> 3.6 is much easier to do.
really? I thought it was the other way around. The electricals (especially e-gas) are more similar in the 3.6 and 3.8, I thought. My indy has two 3.8 engines he bought in case someone wants to upgrade from the 3.6.
deoxford,
The shop that did my 3.4 to 3.6 swap is in Atlanta. They can do the 3.8 as well. More $$ because regardless if you are e-gas already or not your DME version can't run the newer systems that are in the 3.8. 3.4 to 3.6 is pretty straightforward. 3.4 to 3.8 involves a lot more electronic systems including swapping to the newer instrument cluster and hvac, etc. PM if you want their contact info.

u are talking big bucks here. ruf is great but terribly expensive and autofarm is in the uk...the exchange rate will kill u plus the cost of shipping it here. alot of money for +/- 50hp increase, not worth it imo.
Guys,
Just a update, I have discoverd that the 3.8 is simple for this car.
And I have found a shop here in Atlanta that does it.
Matter of fact it is my shap and they have a Cayman in there right now with the 3.8
I am waiting to find out the cost. I am sure it will be cheaper or the same as what the Porsche dealer was saying for the 3.6 replacement ~12k
Did you guys drop in 997 3.8s or 3.6s bored over?
I've heard there are DME issues with the 997 into MKII 996 but never looked into it beyond that (I'm not considering it but always curious)
If you have any links to your respective installs I would love to se how you pulled it of cleanly.
Ok, going to pull the trigger on this repair.
Sunset is telling me that the 3.8 is really the X51 package is this correct. they have it price for
$7820.00 -3.6 $2363.80 Core
$8518.85 -X51 $2566.24 Core
I just to make sure that the X51 is the correct engine
And there are no issues with the swap
Thanks for your input
An X51 kit is an upgrade that includes intake, exhaust, cams, lifters, and heads, as well as some other goodies. It does not include more displacement. X51's were available for 3.4's (not in the US) and 3.6's, and for 3.8's.
Derek,
Just make sure to tell Sunset what Car model you want the engine from.
The US choices are,
996 3.4
996 3.6
996 3.6 x51
997 3.6
997 3.8
997 3.8 X51
Just to confuse things there is also a Cayman 3.4 which is not the same as the 996 3.4
The other thing they likely didn't mention is that the core price you list is something that you pay additional if you don't have an engine just like the one you are buying to return to them. So if you want a 3.8 X51 you need a broken 3.8 X51 to turn in or pay the Core fee.
Good luck!
Just re-read your original post.... since your buddy "hit" something I guess that he has a hole in the engine. That by Porsche's definition is not an acceptable core. The golden rule told to me was if there is a hole in the engine block that came from the inside out then it can be a core.. The other way around... no core.
FVD in Pompano dropped a 3.8 into a Boxster. I was able to drive it - it is an amazing car. The DME was replaced, of course, and it cost big bucks, but what a cool way to embarrass any Corvette in town.
In some parts of the world aftermarket SC's are prohibited w/o exception in pollution controlled vehicles, and cars are inspected yearly. You really can't hide a SC. And if you import a 996 turbo, you'll pay about 34k in tax...
In this case an engine swap is costworthy option.
