Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

we are goping to "pass the hat around" if something doesnt change soon!!
Leading evidence: 'Replace soon' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). The question I keep running into is: Should I buy a MK I 996 with lower miles, or a MK II 996 with higher miles, if the price is the same.

It has been a crappy 3-year run for us and, so far, 2009 isn't looking much better.

I love mine, but I did have to put some money into it after purchase to take care of some basic maintenance (hopefully all set for a little while now).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

that's the widest job of narrowing I have ever seen.
what are your plans for the car, what do you want out of it. Maybe some imput will help get you at least into what type of car to pick

I've been looking at 996s also. The question I keep running into is: Should I buy a MK I 996 with lower miles, or a MK II 996 with higher miles, if the price is the same. For example, I'm looking at two right now. One is a 2001 C4 with roughly 36K miles, one is a 2002 C4S with 70K miles. Same price.
If I could afford a 997, I would go that way.
Obviously, you want AWD. However, you need to go through a logical decision making process to narrow your selection criteria. The process below is based upon the 4 cars you have listed.

If it is a NA Coupe you want, then the 997 is the best choice.
ivangene - The lease on my Audi S4 is coming up so I'm looking to upgrade. The new car would be my daily driver. Also point to note is that I live in Calgary, Canada - so daily driving includes snow - hence the AWD.
IMO Tim (gota911) hit it on the head... follow the list and see where you end up, all are good choices, you must descide which is the BEST choice
GL and post pics when you get it home
Go for the cabriolet!! No, no, wait, go for the TURBO! Yeah, no, wait, maybe the 997 would be a better choice?
YOU need to decide what you want, first.
If that turbo is one of your choice... you should look more. There are plenty that is lower miles at that price....
I would go with the 996 turbo... GT1 block (bullet proof), forget the m96/97 platform if you are into modding...
The '02 C4S is way overpriced based on my recent experience. I love mine, but I did have to put some money into it after purchase to take care of some basic maintenance (hopefully all set for a little while now).
BTW, Tim's decision tree rocks!
Thanks!
There was no problem with the decision making or analytical process, it was all about finances. I got caught in a corporate downsizing at the start of 2006 when I lived in Charlotte.
I did some freelance consulting for the next two years. I didn't make a lot of money because the jobs were too few and too far in between. We had to dip into out savings during the down periods.
I took the job in Dallas in Feb of 2008 to get a "more stable income." Well, that job ended in December 2008 when 150+ of 185 corporate employees got laid off (so much for stability). So as it turns out getting the Honda was the right move, especially since 1) we now have one income (my wife is a teacher) and 2) we have two mortgage payments (we haven't sold our NC house), and 3) my daughter is a junior in college.
It has been a crappy 3-year run for us and, so far, 2009 isn't looking much better.
if 996 then turbo
otherwise 997 c4s is very quick (unlike the 64S, the 7 has a bigger motor/makes more power), and newer by a bunch of years
stock to stock a 7C4S vs. a 6TT I'd be surprised if you coul tell the difference performance wise on the street. Drive both.
If you want a TON of power cheap through easy modding, 6TT all the way, you can program in an easy 100 horsepower for 1000 dollars, and many pick up much more than that with relatively cheap, incredibly effective mods which are impossible to match on an N/A car.
If I were to make a trade today, I'd be hard pressed to choose between the two. The man in loves the practicality and sensibility of the 7C4S, the boy in me gets excited just thinking about the amount of power you can pull out of a 6TT
One thing for sure though is that you (OP) are buying at the best time (buyer market), many many cars (options) to choose from and that is why it's giving you a "brain freeze" right now
Good luck w/ your purchase and enjoy it as much as you can, as these are fantastic cars... Cheers,
