Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Odd that they changed the wheels to those later model wheels.

If you don't care about those, check the PPI if passed then make an offer for this car.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Is there any particular reason to stay away from ultra low-mileage 996's? I guess the main thing is that the warranty is gone and it's barely broken in, so any problems may not have shown up yet.
Here's why I'm asking:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/ctd/1049277546.html
They've already dropped the price by $3k...
Early 996's have more issues - which were later designed out as the designs for engine etc were updated.
Mileage is not the issue at this point, the year of manufacture is a significant negative in this case.
IMHO - let the flaming begin!
I have a can of gas, where do I pour it?
This is a nice car, what do you intend to use it for. It has shown up here before IIRC so others will have things to say. This car could be very good at some things and a real pain in the backside for others. Let us know and perhaps with some group effort you will end up getting what you are really after
I'm looking for a DD (20 mi total / day). Currently in an '04 MCS, but ready to have the engine and drive wheels behind me!
Was originally thinking about 964/993 models, but realized that they are not the answer for a DD. Looking for a color that is not silver. Want to stay under $30k. Most 996 in this range have ~60k miles, which is why this one is so interesting.
Buy an extended and comprehensive warranty in that case.
One that would pay for a new engine if required.
I went from an 03 MCS to a 996, and deliberately went for a post 01 model, i.e. one with most of the key modifications already built-in
Just my view of course - but 02 was ideal for me.
What's an MCS.
That looks like a great car at a very good price. Recession is good if you have money.
Odd that they changed the wheels to those later model wheels.
Also a bit of a question if it just had a service at 8600 miles.
Did it ever have a service before that???
If it's as clean as it looks and you like it, then try and get 'em down another $1500 (or have them include a warranty or something) and drive it away!
No reason to stay away - and who should know better than I?
It's all in the way the car is maintained and stored. Mine is an '04 with 3100 miles - no RMS leaks or any other problems. Oil change every 1-2 years, brake and coolant flushes, and dry storage. Not to say what I'll see in a year or two, but for now, it's been a completely trouble-free car.
Alright guys, let me have it.
Phil,
Have you used more "replacement fluids" (a.k.a. oil, brake fluid, coolant) than gasoline? It's got to be close!
Man, if I ever get my hands on your car, she won't know what hit her. It's like the old saying..... "show me a man who doesn't eat his wife and I'll take his wife away from him!"
No flame, that sounds reasonable.
There seems to be evidence the '99 is more prone to fail. Whether or not the weak points of the engine were ever completely redesigned is questionable.
That car looks clean and beside super low mileage, it does not seem to have lots of options like the leather dash, 3-spoke steering wheel, etc... If you don't care about those, check the PPI if passed then make an offer for this car.
I ain't scared of a low mileage car......so, it may leak a little oil. Keep adding more and enjoy it.
Determining that the engine may fail due to low mileage because it hasn't proved it will stay together.......no one will ever know unless they DRIVE it!
I'd take it.
Not sure how reliable it is, but carfax indicates it an oil services 5k miles. Need to check the books and see it in person.
I agree, not many options- not even a CD player! Is the stereo pre-wired for a changer in the trunk?
The car is at a pcar dealer. Does one still request a PPI in those situations? And if so, do you take it to a different dealer/shop?
What's the going price for 996's in your area? They may have dropped the price because they got tired of waiting for a buyer that would be willing to pay a premium for an ultra-low mileage car that age, especially in these times.
Get the dealer to CPO that bad boy on their dime and I think you may have a winner.

Thanks for the input!
That's my thought, too. It will be interesting to get their reaction.
I've seen 996's for just under $20k and up. There doesn't seem to be much logic in the pricing these days.
