Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I replaced the intake and hose, and I'll have to replace the silicone again.

Removed 40 lbs worth of aftermarket amplifier and cd changer, removed K&N intake and replaced with factory air box, R&R oil sump due to damage/leak, muffler delete w/ Beluga kit because it was too quiet.

Underside of vehicle looks like a 23 year old vehicle w/o much maintenance or cleaning (grime, dirt, bolts are free of visible work).

Also need to troubleshoot an intermittent digital oil level gauge, OAT sensor and repair instrument cluster wiring clamps (probably all related to the clamps that disintegrated).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Picked up this 996 last week, 52k miles with a Tiptronic. I bought it sight unseen expecting it would need some love...I've been busy. No, IMS has has not been done to my knowledge. Oil analysis is off to Blackstone, filter change and oil sump change showed no large metal pieces. Crankcase pressure was at 5.5 w/ the cheap Amazon manometer. Tried to borescope from the sump but it's quite the maze to get to cylinders. Spark plug scope just showed carbon fouling on cylinder heads...not sure how normal these are.
Installed new serpentine belt, plugs, coils, oil filter housing. Removed 40 lbs worth of aftermarket amplifier and cd changer, removed K&N intake and replaced with factory air box, R&R oil sump due to damage/leak, muffler delete w/ Beluga kit because it was too quiet. I think that's all of the major stuff. Lots of intermediate cleaning and still needs a paint correction.
Definitely prepared to drop the engine and do IMS/RMS/AOS. Just want to drive for a few weeks and enjoy it some.
Very nice...!!!
You're well on your way to getting the 996.2 bullet proofed, and seem to know what else needs to be done.
The muff bypass I tried also but it was deafening to me. After a hard romp my ears would ring, way to loud for my taste on my around town tip 996 car. I'll be surprised if you keep the muff delete bypass.
Not sure what weight oil you are running as you seem to be right up on all the weak points of the 996 so probably are already running
the now Porsche recommended w x 50 oil that helps keep oil pressure instability at bay.
Pulled out another 40lbs of custom 2003 audio equipment.
what do I need to go above metal plate with sound deadening material? Will likely leave rear seats deleted since theyre useless for my application.
The more I look at the engine bay, I believe parts have been replaced. Underside of vehicle looks like a 23 year old vehicle w/o much maintenance or cleaning (grime, dirt, bolts are free of visible work). Engine bay was either extensively detailed or things got R&Rd. They all look like new pieces to me (less than ~3 years old).
In particular, the A/C hoses look to be new along with black trim piece above engine. Any prying eyes tol say OEM or just a very well cared for engine bay? I replaced the intake and hose, and I'll have to replace the silicone again. Didn't realize tiptronic needed a breather. Probably go w/ the Flat 6 kit on the next go.
Oil pan reseal is holding w/o leaks and crankcase pressure did not change.
OP - Wow! A black .2 Tip with aero is very cool. That spoiler looks to be
996-512-903-00-G2X. If so, that’s a pretty rare item these days.
Is the front bumper cover aero? I can’t quite tell from photos. The engine bay looks right. I see you have the plastic coolant connection (to the right of the idler pulley). That’s a quick fix with the Rauch & Spiegel aluminum version ($42 from R&S) - takes 20 minutes. The Flat Six silicon intake product is good. DesignTek offers them, as well.
The wheels, wing and side skirts are not factory Porsche or at least it didn't leave the factory that way. Uknown if they're replicas, the wing red brake light says Hella/Made in Germany. Front bumper is standard, but needs to be done to match IMO.
Thanks for pointing out the coolant connection, didn't know about that problem!
It's been a busy few weeks, lawn is starting to deteriorate and I've neglected home repairs. Time to take a break before I tackle the IMS. Also need to troubleshoot an intermittent digital oil level gauge, OAT sensor and repair instrument cluster wiring clamps (probably all related to the clamps that disintegrated).
This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
