I had it installed without the switch, under 3000 rpm there is little difference from stock so you can drive round the neighbourhood without scaring small children.

Suggestion
If you have the PSE electronics installed, to disable to auto quiet feature, the speed signal wire from the relay harness must be disconnected from the speed signal tap on the relay support bracket.
Leading evidence: 'Install without the switch' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect from the speed signal tap' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

You can get the Ruf from Weissach in Canada or Ruf in Dallas., it will run about $2K.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello 996 gang
A friend has a 40th Anniversary 996 with the X51 pkg. He is very much interested in buying an aftermarket exhaust for his Porsche. He is leaning towards the PSE but has a few questions about it.
1) Will the PSE fit his Porsche.
2) Besides sound, what are the benifits(horsepower gains)that he can expext from the PSE? Will his power band move higher in the rpm range.
Thanks in advanced for your replies
Yes
No HP gains
Benefit with PSE is you can turn it on and off. Some say the sound is the best. Do a search on this site there are endless threads on this topic.
Negative is it automatically quiets from 25-40mph.
I have PSE on my 3.4. best mod by far.
I had it installed without the switch, under 3000 rpm there is little difference from stock so you can drive round the neighbourhood without scaring small children.
There is a very, very easy hack to get rid of the auto quiet function between 25-40 mph that I, and many others here, have done. I wouldn't count that as a negative.
I also have the PSE for the 3.4... get compliments on the sound all the time... after doing this mod I've put the upgraded stereo on hold.... simply don't neded it
as for the "other" exhausts... a few extra hp (3-5) ain't gonna make any difference at all... IMO you can't beat the sound of the PSE and I've heard a few... the PSE sounds the most "authentic" out there... my only other pick would be the RUF exhaust - different but just as good.
I highly recommend the PSE with the electronics installed. If the exhaust is being installed as a retrofit, the auto-quiet feature is disabled by simply not installing one wire.
Here is the write-up of my installation
Installing the PSE is very easy, and can be spread over several steps to make things easier.
I have the PSE and would like to know how to disable the auto quiet thingy at low speeds.
1. How do I do it?
2. If I do it, does the quieting button still work?
If you have the PSE electronics installed, to disable to auto quiet feature, the speed signal wire from the relay harness must be disconnected from the speed signal tap on the relay support bracket. (The replay support bracket is the thing under the driver's footwell that has all of the relays on it.)
Find the PSE relay P/N 996 618 980 03 and look for pin 6 of the relay socket. There is a Pink/grey wire that comes out of it and down to the jumper plug in slot 23 1/1 on the bottom row of the relay support bracket. Simply clip that wire, and you will disable the auto quiet function. The dash switch will still work just fine, and the default state of the PSE will be "on".
There is also a hack that cuts a diode inside the relay. Click here to see that one.
If you are doing a new install of a PSE, simply do not connect pin 6 of the relay socket to slot 23 1/1.
If you have Navigation, you must NOT clip the speed wire, or else navigation will stop working. The only way to do the mod if you have Navigation is to bend out the one leg of the four prong bridge (you cannot remove the bridge entirely or it has the same effect as clipping the speed wire). Detailed instructions can be found at
www.renntech.org
, like orient express mentioned.
TD
If you don't have NAV, just pull out the four prong bridge from the back of the relay altogether. No soldering, no clipping of wires, no permanent modifications to the car, and the mod is completely reversible in about 10 minutes.
This is not correct. The Jumper plug at slot 23 1/1 is the terminal source for all devices that require a speed signal. By removing or clipping the lead from 23 1/1 to the PSE, none of the other devices such as Nav or the Cabrio top will be affected. Of course if you cut all of the leads (or remove the bridge plug) that come out of 23 1/1 then all of those devices that need a speed signal will be impacted. This is why TD's navigation system stopped working, he removed all of the signal taps instead of just the PSE.
Just remove the one that goes to the PSE relay and you will be fine. I would not advise removing the bridge plug in 23 1/1 because there are other things that need a speed signal.
Forgot about the cab. If you don't have the cab, you can just remove the bridge or bend back the one leg. Safer route is just to bend back the one leg or remove the wire. Mine has the one leg bent back and everything works fine . . .
The bad part was that my 911 sounded like a Chevy S-10 pickup with a rusted out muffler. That and the fact that friends and family had this disgusted, pre-vomit look on their face whenever I revved the engine.
Other than the sound and that it doesn't give any extra horsepower, it was great!
IMO the regular GHL on a 3.6 sounds just about perfect, don't know about the louder version. The PSE sounds good too, if it would just hold together. Ditto on the RUF, the best sound by far, also the most expensive.
Doug... I don't know what problems you've had with the PSE but it IS a very good quality exhaust. The RUF does sound mean and racy... where can we get one of those?
I have the PSE on my 40th anniversary and love it. I had the electronics installed and second guessed my desicion to spend the extra $$$'s on the electronics until today. I had to do a conference call while on my cell phone on my way to work this morning. With all the stop and go traffic, my exhaust was making too much noise for the speaker phone in my boss' office to work effectively. The folks in my boss's office kept complaining about all of the noise from my end. After I deactivated the PSE, all was fine.
TD,
Do you have the nav system in your car?
When I get some free time, I'm planning to deactivate the 25 mph cut-out.
Little things like being black flagged at the track because parts were falling off the PSE (heat shields), constant rattles from the actuator arms, poor quality workmanship(IMO)...mind you this was an early 3.4 version and the 3.6 looks better.
