I later found a thread on here from the first owner who replaced the IMS at 78k miles so I feel better about that.

Also - a little known fact is that the factory reman motors did not have cosmoline smeared all over them, so have them check for bare aluminum...this would be good.

MY first Porsche. 2WD, manual, 76k. I'm having Porsche Dallas do a PPI. I will fly to Dallas and Drive it home to California. Paid $23K, negotiated from $23888k, Yikes, do I have to worry about the IMS on my long drive home. Should I have it shipped for $800. Let's see... air fair+gas+lodging=$500-$600. The big advantage to driving it back is I can personally evaluate. The seller said if I'm not 100% happy they will refund my $500 deposit. Can totally trust the seller, photos, and the Porsche service dept? As you may have guessed, I'm anxious and excited.
I took the same plunge last year, buying an '02 based only on ppi, pictures, and a quick look by a friend of a friend. I would have flown up to buy it too, but the weather was awful. Turned out great. Congratulations and good luck.
And don't let that IMS demon keep you from enjoying the car!
Check the air pressure, fill it with gas and drive it back to california. Pull the key out when filling it up. Check to see if all the key fobs operate the alarm and locking system. If not see if they can fix it for you cheaper than the big buck fix.
You'll love the car. It's rear engine and prone to slip in the back while the front stays planted. Have a safe cruise.
The previous owner(s) enjoyed it for 8 years and 76K miles, so why let the scare tactics of self-promoting entrepreneurs rob you of the same enjoyment? OTOH, on
any
8 yr old car and/or with 76K miles, there's a
ton
of things that
could
be waiting to fail, that a PPI won't necessarily pick up on. Myself I wouldn't take a new-to-me car of that age/mileage x-country, especially not a brand that not every town has a mechanic or a dealership that can fix it. A 500-mile tow could run more than the cost of shipping the car all the way to your home. Either way the first thing I'd do is purchase the most extensive-coverage warranty on it I could get, and then just enjoy it. The warranty I got on my '03 E-Class last year has already paid me back double what it cost and it still has 2 more years to go.
I would not worry.
If PPI comes back and says the clutch should be replaced, then book an appointment with RUF Dallas and get IMS and clutch replaced at the same time.
Or choose the "A" plan & have PPI done @ Ruf & have IMS bearing installed if you deceide to buy the car. The only extended warranty with immediate benefits.
As Nissan claims enjoy the ride!
That's going to be one fun drive! I know because I've done it myself. Make sure you bring your Valentine One.
The majority of your journey will probably be driving through Texas believe it or not. It's a humongous state with long straight stretches of empty tarmac. You're going to love driving through Arizona. It's so beautiful and it feels like you've traveled back in time to the Jurassic era in your Porsche! I laughed when I actually saw a dinosaur theme park on the trip, hours after thinking how ancient the landscape appeared. Dinosaurs really did roam the earth in Arizona.
While you're in Dallas check out Sushi Sake, and Papa's BBQ. The barbecue in Texas is far far superior to anything we have here in Cali. Smoked all day over hickory wood, the dry rub beef ribs aren't slathered in that tomato based barbecue gunk; they just melt in your mouth. And although we have better sushi here in Cali than in Dallas, you have to pay a great deal more for it. For the price Sushi Sake cannot be beat. They fly their fish fresh from Japan and their chef is a 3rd generation sushi chef.
Have fun with your new 996!
drove my 996 from denver to ca 19 hours straight over the summer. Ended up driving through a flash flood in Utah, and what the locals described as a small tornado. I too was worried about the IMS the car had 99k miles on it. I've got 106k miles on it now and love everyday of driving it! I later found a thread on here from the first owner who replaced the IMS at 78k miles so I feel better about that. If the motor blows, it blows I'll find another motor!
Another Texas 996 is exported to a new state.
Three months ago, I bought my 04 996 in Houston. Gave them my deposit, and then had the PPI done before I agreed to buy. Flew down to drive it back to Chicago. If your PPI comes back OK, don't be afraid to drive it back to Cali. First of all, it's cheaper than shipping it. Second of all, you will get to know your car better than you can imagine. Third of all, you will have a great time in the car for 2 days. No complaints there!!!!
This is a high quality 8 year old car with only 76K miles. It's not like it's from the early '70's, has 150K on it, and has been sitting in a garage untouched for 15 years.
Don't panic about the IMS issues. From what I can tell, maybe 5% of the cars are afflicted with the problem. I think that your chances are good that you will never face the issue. Do all the research and reading, and then decide how to deal with it down the road.
To show you how scared the public is on this issue -- The shop that did the PPI for me volunteered to do the IMS replacement "as long as we have the car in our shop." WHAT? This isn't an oil change, boys, and I didn't even own the car yet.
I'll bet that they're making a mint on that issue.
Have lots of fun with it, drive it hard, enjoy every (s)mile. And post some damn pictures.

congrats dennis. I too bought myself a christmas present last week in the form of a 996. You'll love every minute of it. By the way, post some pics before this crew berates you into submission. I had to go out in the dark last week and take a photo or I was risking being banned!
ok i know i haven't been on very much lately, but what the heck is going on with all these crazy IMS questions? can i drive it home or will the IMS go? are you kidding me? that's a "check your state's/purchase state's lemon law" question.
I think i'm about to start selling warranties
Make sure you get at least two working keys!!! Make sure all electronics work also, trip computer, lights seats, windows, take your time check everything.
Thanks for all the comments, info, and support. The seller already took down the fotos, I don't have any. Anyway It's a 2003 not 2002. Geez, how could I get that wrong! Stupefied by my emotion.
Well....2003s are better {self-serving opinon} ....so, if you're going to confuse years, you're going the right direction.
Probably too late now, but as others have noted, take the time to try to use every button and lever you can find and make sure all keys actually work.
You'll get to the ims in due time....just enjoy the ride for now. At least it's broken in!
My 2002 996 went thru 5 RMS's and it still leaked. It was out off warranty so the factory wouldn't do anything. The dealers I took it to said they have a high percentage of owners with this problem. Needless to say, I don't have the car anymore-if it wan't for the RMS I would still have it but for that caliber of car it was totally unacceptable, so beware and have a thorough PPi by a shop that has the latest go-no go gauge.
Dude forget all the IMS RMS ****! if it leaks you will see it...Thats it! As for the drive home ENJOY IT, i bought a 2002 from San Fran after it was PPi'd, i flew there and drove back to AZ 13 hours..and loved every minute of the adventure

Here's the only pics I have. What do yall think. Did I do good? Providing the PPI is good of course
I'm wondering about those wheels. Are they genuine Porsche? I haven't seen any fotos of those wheels on stock cars, but I have seen them before somewhere. I'm a little freaked out because due to the holidays and family obligations I have to have it shipped so I can't see/evaluate in person. The service guy at Dallas Porsche assured me he would give me a thorough and honest appraisal of the mechanics, electronics, and cosmetics. What can go wrong. Right? yikes
Those are sport classic wheels, not gt3 wheels, and were a very popular and readily available option.
Stop freaking out, and put all of your questions into an email for the party performing the PPI.
You'll be fine! For your own sake, buy a warranty, and sleep easy.
So its the weekend and no nice pics to look at with guys talking about scooting along with blondes and new toy 911's blah blah blah its a cruel world I guess.
OK, am I confused? You bought the car. You're planning on flying out and then driving it home. You're having a Porsche dealer do the PPI. Is that the same place that you bought it from? Is the PPI going to be done BEFORE or AFTER you buy the car?
Driving it home is a fun way to familiarize yourself with the car, but why does it seem that newbies are so excited to buy their first Porsche, that they forget that PPI stands for PRE purchase inspection? Having it done AFTER you buy the car is just the worst way of finding out how much you have been screwed after the fact. Can you trust the dealer? No, I doubt it. Can you trust the selling dealer that they will let you have a few days of driving in it and then would refund your deposit? I'd think that they're pretty safe if you are spending those few days to drive it home!!!
What are the chances that you're going to bring it back - drive another few days to bring it back!!!??? Just make sure that you get it all in writing.
The car looks beautiful. If it's as nice on the inside (and I mean mechanicals, not the cockpit) then you're in good shape. All the best.

OK, I put a $500 refundable deposit to hold the car with the seller (Straight Line Automotive). They are taking the car to Dallas Porsche for the PPI. I complete the transaction or not after the PPI. If I nix the deal due to discovered problems with the car, they refund my $500. I paid for the PPI. I lose that. PPI was $200. Shipping is about the same as airfare+ gas+lodging. My girl friend and I were going to fly and get it, but now that just is not working out. So, I'm having them ship it. My anxiety comes from not seeing it myself. This is my first Porsche and I've been hunting for months. Seller is a big high end luxury used car seller with 100% positive ebay and BBB rating. The Porsche service guy said the seller is good. The price is good. Too good?? I wonder about that also. But I have this quirk about getting really good deals independent of my financial means.
Thanks for the further explanation. You have two things going for you, not the least of which is a GF that is part of the process. The PPI at $200 is cheap insurance. Have them send you a listing of the things that they're going to check out for you. One very important thing to check out is any leaks. Don't let people tell you that ALL Porsches leak oil. THEY DON"T. My 2004 996 is totally dry. Your's can or should be as well. You can usually fix most leaks, but why should you have to deal with it? An ongoing leak hides many troubles.
If the shop doing the PPI is straight-up with you, you should be fine. As I said earlier, I flew down to Texas from Chicago to pick up my car. Could I have said "No" when I got to the dealership - yes. But the likelihood of that was slim and none. I got the car, drove it home, loved every minute of it - and I still do.
You need to find a local independent mechanic to work on your car. Even if you get to the point where you do some DIY stuff, you will need a skilled mechanic to go over the car during that once a year service. Then . . . . .
ENJOY ENJOY ENJOY - Let us know how the car is after you take delivery. Good Luck

You're doing it exactly right. The Porsche delaer will do as good an assessment as they can but while they can find leaks and obvious signs of abuse or crash damage, we all know they can't diagnose an internal engine problem that hasn't happened yet.
The 3.6 litre cars were good cars, so chill the %$@ out or buy a new Toyota with a warranty. $23K is a great price, I paid $26.5K last year for a car with about the same mileage and I think I got a good deal (although mine had a new motor installed under warranty...service records indicate it was some problem other than IMS failure, it never ran right, maybe a cam timing issue?).
For $23K You get some cool wheels and a half aero kit, probably you will get the Bose stereo too, which I wish I had. Seal Grey is a really nice colour, and if you like tint, you got tint....I don't like tint myself, but hey, that's my problem.
Make sure you ask the Porsche dealership specifically about the engine condition, and have them do a download of the service history...who knows you might get lucky and have a fresh motor yourself. Some dealers will report extensively on the condition of the paint since that's all a lot of Porsche buyers are worried about. You're different though, and make sure they know it.
Also - a little known fact is that the factory reman motors did not have cosmoline smeared all over them, so have them check for bare aluminum...this would be good. Not that a stock motor is bad, but a reman motor is better right?
Lastly - if you still can't sleep at night after you buy it, then invest the $1K or so it takes to install the LN bearing upgrade. You got the car cheap enough that you shouldn't complain about spending a few thou to get it the way you want it.
As far as being afraid to drive it home.....that's just crazy
My indie mechanic quoted me $1K for the IMS replacement bearing alone, $2.5K including labor. Are you saying you can get the ceramic bearing installed for ~$1K?
Just to make you feel better - I know lots of folks who have bought Porsches at Straightline and have been very happy with the process and the cars. Park Place Porsche will do a good job on your PPI. If you find anything that needs fixed, have Straightline either fix it now or deduct the cost from the selling price. You'll be just fine - congrats!
I would not let Park Place do anything to my car - sorry, I just dont trust those guys (here locally anyhow, I am sure some of their shops are fine.... like a good jiffy lube
)
and if I buy another 996 I want a GREAT PPI not a good one - but I know you meant well with your comment
Dennis,
That is a nice looking car!
Oh yeah, just for the record....... pics from the seller or previous owner DO NOT count as having fulfilled your obligation to post pics of the car once you own it!
rder:
Ed... how did I do???
I bought my '03 from SL some 45,000 miles ago. They are a solid Internet dealer and the owner Jeremy is a straight shooter. Would not hesitate to work with them again.
While I prefer Boardwalk Porsche here in the Dallas area, certainly nothing wrong with Park Place (the dealer SL uses). In fact it turned out that Park Place had sold and serviced my car from day 1 and they were able to give me it's full service records. Ask them, you may get lucky as well.
Relax, it's a good car and you are dealing with a couple of very reputable places. Congrats and enjoy the ride!
I would go to pick it up or at the least see it / drive it and then ship it. Otherwise you will worry all during transit. There are some cheap fares to LUV on Southwest... And make sure to try Bone Daddys for GREAT BBQ and pretty servers.....
Update?
And I understand your concerns. I bought mine without seeing it in person last winter. Because of weather I had it shipped. Nerve-racking, But it all worked out great.
This is so long a thread, that I don't remember if I wrote this already or not. Anyway, if this is a repeat, forgive me. I bought my 04 996 in Houston, while I was in Chicago. It passed an Indy's PPI. I flew down, drove it around the block, signed a few papers, and drove it back to Chicago. Not a single hiccup along the way. Don't be afraid to drive it. Geez, you're going to drive it when you get it home, aren't you?? If you're afraid to drive it, DON"T BUY IT!!! That's why you made the purchase - to flog that puppy. Drive it hard, and don't look back.
larry
Update. Just to continue I hope not too boring a thread. The PPI indicated a leak at the oil pump and an oil line. Also needs an alignment and one window regulator. No leak or noise at the IMS.The dealer quoted $3400 for everything. He stated car is cosmetically great. The seller had his mechanic asses the leak and he said there was no evidence of a leak or a even a weep. I offered $2000 less and they came down $1000. I bought the car. I have an great indy mechanic ( a friend) who will do the oil pump if needed and preventive IMS for $1000 labor. So The car cost $22K + $800 shipping+ $1600 for the IMS and maybe leak/weep. I could just drive It!! I should get around 1/6/2011
Well, congratulations. Enjoy the hell out of the car!! Remember that you're driving a car. There will always be something that needs to be done. You will need to decide how critical the repair, how important the timing. Don't spend every last cent you have getting it pristine. It's a used car with 76,000 miles. Just enjoy it!
larry
Funny, you said here are the only photos I have of the car - and there are like 100 top quality pics from every angle! Yet, since YOU didn't take them, they are void!
I can't believe the dealer would charge $3400 to fix the leak(s) ! Yikes. You did great, getting a $100k car for $24k, IMS replaced and everything!
Have them fix the window regulator - it's a PITA to do it yourself, especially on a brand new (to you) Porsche! Good luck!
OK....I got my car yesterday. It was safely shipped from Dallas to Nor Cal. I was anxious by worrying about all kinds of stuff since I bought this sight unseen but with PPI. The car is as beautiful as the pics posted above. I met up with the transport in Redding, Ca. and drove it home on a 40 mile mountainous road to my home. I tested it out by driving it safely but pushing it a bit. In no time a guy in a new Mitsubishi came up behind me. I steadily increased my speed but he kept on my tail. I would easily drop him on short straights and since I was unfamiliar with my new ride, I tempered it on the curves. He definitely was challenging me. I finally tested the car a bit more and no way he could keep up. Car had a lot more go in reserve. What fun! About the car. It has a owner's manual with all the options listed. Get this. Bose, 18'' Sport wheels, stainless steel exhaust, sport suspension, side skirts, xenon headlights, memory/lumbar support seats, and more. I'm having fun pricing the options $12119 TOTAL. I figure that makes this an $81K car Yikes! I did not know it was so well equipped. Car runs great by my observation. The wheels are way cool looking but the low profile tires on these 18"ers give a rough ride. A little let down by that. Tires seem noisy too. I'm just used to my Mercedes' quiet ride. Provided everything proves out, I feel like I struck gold.
Dennis,
Very cool! lets see some pics!
Those Porsche options add up fast, my 996 has a bunch but looking at the window sticker of my Cayenne, Over 21K in options!
