I had a mouse nest (and urine) on those relays, I took each one out and cleaned the contacts and ground wire terminals, that solved my "multiple engine faults" OBD issues.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all. I'm brand new to rennlist and to the Porsche world. I purchased my first ever Porsche yesterday, a 2004 base 996 convertible. It's a flood salvage car that I bought as a project for the summer as I've always wanted a 911 and figured this was the only way I'll afford one lol!. I know this is going to be a long road, but I'm up for the challenge. The way I figure, if someone was able to build it, I can surely take it apart and rebuild it! Damn shame about the car as the paint and body and top are immaculate and it had less than 50,000 miles on it when it was flooded in 2021, but hey, I got it for cheap so.... The car was delivered to me this afternoon and I began toying around with it. After some inspection to see if there was anything that jumped out at me, I felt it was safe enough to throw a battery in it and see what she does. Low and behold, it powered up and made some noises and beeps, lights lit up on the dash and the like, but many functions are still funky (as expected). For example, when I open the doors the windows will bump down and when I close it, they close as they should, but if I try to operate them with the window switch, nothing. Which is good and bad, good because I know the motors and regulators work, but bad because I can't control them. Similarly, the windshield wipers: I can run the through their speeds, but when in the off position, they will still swipe randomly. This all leads me to believe the body control module is at fault, but I don't know where it is. I was able to wiggle the immobilizer out form under the driver seat, but can't locate the BCM. Any help as to where it's located? I'm going to start reading and posting in the tech forums as well, but my first pass in searching didn't come up with anything. Once again, I'm completely new to the Porsche world, but I can say I'm very excited with this project and am sure I'll have it back cruising in no time. Thanks all!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Awesome! Thank you. I already pulled that out and found the fuse was blown as well as the expected corrosion from the flood. I'm working cleaning and de-oxing it now and will play with it more tomorrow.

POST 4Original post

It sounds like youre in for a long haul! If it were me, and a known flood car, I would start by removing the entire interior - seats rugs padding etc. this will expose potential rust/rot areas as well as give you access to wiring shift cables ECU, Immobiliser etc. Also while carpets, padding etc are out you can clean them properly to remove any mold, stains etc. ECU Dr. in Florida can check/test your ECU & Immobiliser for any faults and perhaps repair or replace it. Good luck !

POST 5Original post

Play with everything and make a list of everything that is acting funky or not working (seat movement and heat, mirror functions, and scan for any error codes. Then remove seats and carpet and get hold of a wiring diagram and check all fuses. Will be beneficial to break out the multimeter and check continuity and clean off any corrosion. Wouldnt hurt to check out the $75 PIWIS thread either and get one of those. Scope the cylinders for any internal water/rust and change the oil/filter before starting it. Good luck and enjoy your project!

POST 6Original post

Any idea what kind of flood car it is? I have heard of cars being branded as flood damaged due to being caught out in the rain which is a bit different than being in a storm surge. The floor carpet in the back seat has about 1 of foam underneath which soaks up water like a sponge.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 20609553

DO THAT! Besides the electronics under the front seats, there are a bunch of relays behind the back seats, if those got wet, the corrosion will wreak havoc on the engine operation. I had a mouse nest (and urine) on those relays, I took each one out and cleaned the contacts and ground wire terminals, that solved my "multiple engine faults" OBD issues.

POST 8Original post

When repairing a flood damage car, it is imperative to figure out " how high the water level got " ...You have to look for signs of the water level inside the car by visually checking the door panels and removing them to see the inside water level. If it was a muddy flood there will be a mud line inside the doors... If it was just clean rain water that got in the car from stopped up drains the water level probably didn't get very high ...

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the information. Yes, I have the history on the car. Its a deep flood, up to the steering wheel so everything was submerged, but the car was on an angle so the engine was up and didnt get water, just the front. But it was a flash flood from a brook which came in and went out just as fast. Unfortunately it was 5 years ago after which the car was bought by a used car dealer who was going to pull the motor but didnt end up doing that, so it just sat. Yes, I know everything has to come out and be cleaned piece by piece, junction by junction. Im not afraid of that and fully expected it. My challenge is that since this is my first Porsche, I dont know where all the modules are location. Once I find them, Ill pull them and go through one by each.
