Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

30....my '85 targa...I'm 39 now. Grabbed it just after my first son was born. Figured if I didn't jump in when I did, I'd have to wait 20 years. That car was recently sold, and I'm loving my 996. I think I'll always have a p car until I'm in the grave.
J
Medtech, I hear you ! that's why I don't want to wait any longer. I am 28 and I should get my 4S mid-next week.
To JBRipps, I hope I own one until I'm in the grave!
22 - had a 6 year old turbo (86 my) , then 1 year later bought a newer one (89 my). Sold the 89 to buy my first house.
My dad is a bit of a car guy and I was living at home and working quite a bit too. I always wanted a Porsche with the wide fenders. Didn't really know the difference between the turbo and the turbo look until I drove one. WOW I loved that car.
I didn't even have to pay my own insurance until I finished college. Sure made it easy.
Ha Ha... awesome - did you have a reserved parking space on the lot? next to the dean's mercedes?
btw... the '80s turbo required lots of driving skills... you probably scared yourself a couple of times when trying to push 'em a little
19 - bought a 79 911 SC and pissed off my parents in doing so. Best decision I ever made, btw...
Still an addict, and still looking to add more 911s to the garage....

Got a Boxster at 24, made the decisionto work hard and put partying on the back burner, concentrate on school and the additional 200 bucks per week that i was saving by not blowing it at the bar allowed me to afford the car at an early age. Then got my first 996 at 26.
Looking back a few years later, would i change anything? Maybe i missed out on some of the best years of my life, maybe not, you only live once. I guess what i'm trying to say is, it's not a race, live your life to the fullest, experience as much as you can, and don't put having a Porsche or F-car or lambo ahead of everything else, in the end you may find out it's not as important as you once thought.
Just my 2 cents
My 944 was my first car at 21. I really wanted the New Boxster when it came out in 97 but settled for the older 944 until I bought a boxster at 27. I hope to get a 997 in 4 years or so.
18, bought a 67' 911 coupe for $2,400 in 1973. Now 35 years later I am on my sixth car. Had the 67', then a 69' 911E Targa with a soft rear window, 76' 911S Targa, a 79' 928, a 82' 928S and now a 2000 C4 Cab. Still lovin them.
Rivarama,
The 4S is an excellent choice! One of the most sought after 911's outside of the turbo. 2003 is one of my favorite 996 years! You get the 3rd radiator, bigger brakes, lowered suspension, great looks. The interior is really nice.
I paid $42k for my 2004.5 with 65k miles on it (private party), so your price is reasonable.
Personally, I think the styling of the 997 has lost something.
50 . . . Told a friend (who is a very young 70) that I was looking at one, and he told me that he has had "three 911s, and each one added 10 years to his life"
34.
Talked about it every 18 months from being 28 years old, but couldn't justify spending that kind of money on a car.
Eventually my wife got sick of listening to the cycle of me talking myself in and out of buying one and told me to go and do it.
I was 17....and drove it without a license for about 1 month.....got my license and within the next 10 weeks wrapped it around a lamp post.....damn!! it was a 924.
2nd when I was 30 was a 928s
Wow this is a much younger average than I would have guessed.
18 y/o in high school with a 68 vette and a 23 y/o girlfriend to buy beer
44 y/o with my first Porsche but it had to be fast and the newer styling converted me over to a 996TT. Great every day supercar and gives me motivation to drive to work!
What it shows it that a majority of the members on here tend to be on the younger side...
Benz by the time I was 25
P car at 30
Ferrari at 35....
1st kid at 36, well, that is the plan...lets see how it turns out...wish me luck!
20 years old, CPO'd 04 996 C4S $115K CAD paid in full, now 22 looking into a 997 MK2 and a Lambo G-Car... Got a VW 1.8T when i was 16 spent tons of money on it... regret selling that car
Actually this poll is skewed toward younger guys because us older guys don't want to admit that we're...well, old!
I was trying to ignore this thread but it's not going away, ha.
I was 43 when I got my 996 last year.
However, I've owned a couple hot Bugs (Porsche ancestors, see my sig) that could compete with the Porsches of their day.

Mike
Oh yeah, NOW you write that.... AFTER I had posted how old I was when I got my first P-car. If you would have gotten to this party much sooner, I wouldn't have embarrassed myself!
23 - But it was a 944... and a it was an absolute 'Lemon'... cost me more money than it was worth an never ran well. Mainly because I really couldn't afford to fix the car properly!
32 (Current) - 2002, 996 C2...
Comon, less of the 'it's not a real Porsche' stuff. I wish I had my 914/6, one of the most fun cars I have had and I still get more enjoyment driving my fleet of 944's/951's than both my 911's. The transaxles also win me more races
I still want a 944 some day for track duty. It looks like a lot of people here have them for track cars instead of the 996. Horray for inexpensive Porsches!
I just sold an 88 951 track car last weekend.
I guess I'll play. I was a Alfa guy in my late 20s and early 30s.
39 thru 47 - 99 996 (bought new and converted to track car)
41 thru 43 - 98 993 cab (not sure why guys like these cars)
43 thru now - 02 996 cab (great car. No reason to sell it)
47 thru 48 - 05 996 cup car (the original flame car)
48 thru now (still 48) - 07 997 cup (the new flame car)
28: 1998 Boxster (purchasd in 2003 with 4500 miles!)
30: 2001 Boxster S (black on black...great car!)
31: 1999 996 (absolutely love it...but kind thinking about a 6-speed as of late).
Hi everyone,
I just purchased my first P-Car today! It's a 2003 C2, Tiptronic in Dark Teal Metallic and Black leather interior. Considering this is an early birthday present (this coming Sunday) and a recent promotion gift for myself, I guess my answer to this topic is 31 years old. This is definitely dream of mine come true.
I love these cars!
-Davin
My first was supposed to be at 33. Bought a '67 Mustang to restore instead. Seven years later the Mustang STILL isn't finished, i'm STILL broke from the endeavor but fortunately the 996s are "affordable"
.
A USED 996 IS THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK SPORTCAR, EVER!! BAR NONE!!
Mid 40's. Preceded by 25+ BMWs, 15 years with a Datsun 280Z race car, and numerous other marques.
One thing this thread brought to mind is right about now 10 years ago the 996 was introduced. Time flies!
So what's the lesson learn here? Don't drive with a license - it might not save your life, but it will save your cars' ?
Thanks for making me laugh though ;-)
Actually, the plan continues as follows
Divorce at 37 Lose the ferrari
Married a second time at 40
Divorce #2 lose the Pcar and the Benz
Takeaway: P-cars are much cheaper to maintain than wives
23 1967 912 Coupe, in 1972. 16 more Porsches since then, including the last four which were all 996's.
I'll be 60 in a couple months. Still running hard at DE's in my current '99 996, 38,000 original miles, NEVER any RMS problems.
I was 20 in school full time and working 3 part time jobs to pay for the Porsche, it was a 1986 944 (this was bought in 1994). Great car and worth my efforts in keeping her!
