Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just bought a 996 near Columbus Ohio the other day and will be driving across America with it to Los Angeles. Im planning on taking it easy and just enjoying the drive. The major cities we'll be driving through are Columbus, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Denver, Las Vegas and finally Los Angeles. So with that in mind anyone know some good roads to sidestep the highways at times? Colorado, Utah and Arizona looks like some good terrain... suggestions?

POST 2Original post

like your own private gumball3000 wow good luck, be sure to take lots of pictures and keep some sort of diary. can't wait to see your 'report'

POST 3Original post

US 36 is a great east west route, it is parallels I-70 to the north, and prior to the interstate was the major east west route. The US hiways are great and have less traffic and many times are in much better condition as well as more visual appeal. You do have to slow down to pass thru towns every so often, but it's a road trip...right!

POST 4Original post

I'm just happy to make it outside of San Diego.....Colorado would be insane!!!!!!!!!!

POST 5Original post

Try heading over into the Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon in Utah. Very beautiful.

POST 6Original post

I drove across last year from Boston to the Bay Area. Visited a friend in Farmington NM. Instead of going south back to US 40, I took Hwy 160 to Tuba City. This goes through the Navajo nation and is a very open and beautiful, surprisingly well kept road and remote ( read "fast!" ). I went in January and lucked out w/ weather. Once at Tuba City, you can go north to the rim at Grand Canyon. I didn't have time to do that and went south back to Flagstaff. Wish I could have...

POST 7Original post

If you have time, go north from LA up Highway 1. It's a mix of Hwy 1 and 101, but make sure to stay on 1 whenever you can. At the very least, take 1 through Big Sur (gorgeous coast route, curving around on cliffs a few hundred feet above the ocean) up to Monterey. In LA, go up to Mulholland drive at night, between Sepulveda and Beverly Glen. Also in LA, you can drive Sunset Boulevard from the beach to Beverly Hills. That's the famous racing scene from Against All Odds, only they filmed it at 30 mph and then sped it up.

POST 8Original post

Go through Sedona in Arizona. Awesome twisties and marvelous views.

POST 10Original post

One of the best drives in the world is the "Million Dollar Highway"....to access you go from Durango, Co...to Silverton, Co.....catch your breath, and go from Silverton to Ouray, Co.....it'll blow anyone's mind. I've done it on a motorcycle 5 times, and in a car twice....absolutely thrilling.....from Ouray, you're about 10 miles as the crow flies to Telluride, but you can't get there in a straight line, so you go around the mountain, about 45 minutes, and pamper yourself in one of America's great ski towns. Another great drive is from Abuquerque to Santa Fe, but don't go on the interstate....take it to the Bernalillo cutoff, and go north.....stop for Indian Pizza on the roadside....the local Indians make a flat bread, covered with veggies, and bake it in a primitive, tasty style...... Back east, try the Blue Ridge Parkway.....not as exciting, but beautiful. good luck

POST 11Original post

If you'd like to meet up during the route feel free to drop in..... If it's not raining then I'm all in.... You got to stop for lunch sometime right? In & Out...... right by LAX -Eli [email removed]

POST 12Original post

definatly shoot through sedona, beautiful scenery and roads. we often times run day trips up there just for the drive!

POST 13Original post

Wait till the snow is gone and hit southern Wisconsin- as close to European roads as you can get and they are almost ALL hard surfaced with little traffic. I've been driving them from Iowa to Road America every summer from the late '60's!!

POST 14Original post

Yellowstone. Work your way over to 14 Alternate through Cody, WY and run the Beartooth Mountains to the east entrance of Yellowstone. Drive the park and drop down 191 through the Tetons out to I-15. Las Vegas, and the whole of the West, is yours from I-15. Hit the Beartooths in June and you'll get the high mountain wild flowers. Unbelievable beauty for the eyes and nose. Bring the 3 wt. fly rod and fish the Tongue River for Cutthroat. Damn, I can't wait for spring!

Kansas - you will love it when you leave I haven't taken the southern routes yet - so i am following the thread for when we leave WA to head back to FL (sometime soon)

POST 18Original post

What are you looking for: windy fast roads, straight line with big views, wide and flat or slippery and windy? I enjoyed the rides in the area of Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Canyon lands, Monument Valley, Durango, Mese Verde: big views. Rocky Mountains National Park: safe and windy and nice curves. The 1 between San Fransisco and LA is a must: nice views, nice towns. Lake Tahoe area: very nice views and woods. So the 95 from Reno to San Fransisco (ski Lake Tahoe, see the Capitol and stop at a winery). Nice (fast) roads from Rapid City (don't forget to stop at Devil's Tower) to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. Crossings through the Siera Nevada (the 178 to Bakersfield or any one of those roads north of there) are great. I have been chasing and being chased by another guy for about an hour or so over windy roads driving just above posted speed :-)), but constantly watch for our friends behind each corner.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks so much for these awesome suggestions!!! I am looking for a bit of everything on my journey, fast, fun, scenery. Im definitely going to take some of these suggestions. I've done the US1 from LA to San Fran, truely one of the best in my life..and that was in rent-a-mustang from hertz! The strangest thing happened that trip, a guy in a Propane truck decided to race me and my buddy... the worst part is WE decided to just let him go, the guy was going 80 around sheer cliffs, it was like a movie or something!! I've gone from Atlanta to Los Angeles taking the 40 before, it was fairly boring to be honest. Texas and Oklahoma were flat and straight, but once we got into Arizona things started looking up. Its a shame because most of this route is the old Route 66- but now 4 or 6 laned with exit signs. If you're ever in South Florida make sure to take US 41 across the everglades, much better than I-75. thats about all i have... Eli, when I get my 996 home I'll pop by for sure. Is your pelicanparts near LAX too? Im in Silverlake at the moment wondering when this rain is going to end! Keep em comin!!

POST 21Original post

If you like big views and the chasing, you need to cross the Siera Nevada and cross further to the coast. The other one which was amazing was the road coming from the east towards Bryce. It was either the 187 or the 12. I was driving on a two lane road on top of a rim and on both sides there was a pink/white valley, and on the horizon we saw lightnin. A very chalenging road. If you like to shift up and down while curving its great. It is a very romote area, but that part was great driving. Sometimes 10% straight down and suddenly windy roads going up again, trees, big views and nice colors. If you like the straight line, go through Monument Valley. Very big views.

POST 22Original post

Thought we lost you for the moment..... Good to hear something Pelican Parts is right by the LAX air port. off of the 105 which meets with the 405 and just minutes from the 110 etc. etc...... Rain is going to let up by tomorrow but is scheduled to return on Sunday "so they say".... I'll start driving the P-car again as of tomorrow.... -Eli
