Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Last month I ran a Carfax just for the heck of it under their vin number.

At each smog check, the mileage is recorded and that's how they try to catch odometer tampering.

Suggestion
Carfax was contacted by the dealer before I bought the car and they amended their records, which was good for me but made me wonder what it takes to get them to change their records.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can anybody tell me what type of items fall under a record as far as Carfax is concerned? For example, when you just go to
www.carfax.com
and enter a VIN it will say, "### records found." Thanks!
CarFax is a waste of money. It may show you something you didn't know, but don't assume that if it doesn't that it hasn't been in a major crash. If the owner doesn't send in the accident report to the DMV, CarFax will not know an accident occured.
Carfax gets publically available data from DMV.
This includes registration, change of ownership, smog checks, DMV inspections, DMV filing of severe insurance claim (total, salvage title). At each smog check, the mileage is recorded and that's how they try to catch odometer tampering.
For $15, it's a good insurance. You can find out vehicle history from carfax which also comes valuable when seller isn't original owner.
Carfax really helped to decide if I should buy my car or not. It found 17 records, proved the mileage of my car (1999 with 20,000 miles) to be correct and also showed that it was maintained once or twice a year.
When I was shopping for a p-car that I could not see in person (purchased car 2000 miles away) carfax was the only piece of mind I had. It showed that mileage, number of owners, buisness or personal car, total loss, major accident and much more. It was well woth the $25 for the month so I could run as many cars as I wanted to--not to mention buyback guarranty....Jeff
When a car is smog checked here in AZ the attendant asks the driver and does not verify the response -- at least that's been my experience. Therefore, you could very well get some inconsistent readings indicating a roll back when in fact none occurred. I had this very thing happen before I bought my car but was able to verify from other sources -- mainly service records from the dealer -- that the apparently inconsistent reading at the smog station was incorrect. The fact it was an even number 31,000, also made me suspicious that the driver or technician had just made a casual estimate without thinking of the consequences. Carfax was contacted by the dealer before I bought the car and they amended their records, which was good for me but made me wonder what it takes to get them to change their records. Presumably, it helps if you're a good customer of theirs, i.e., a dealer. It also made me wonder what kind of problems I would have had later when I sell the car if the dealer hadn't weighed in on the matter as a condition to my buying the car.
Carfax is a total joke...Two years ago an in-law had a brand new new Jag Vandam Plas. Beautiful car. It was wrecked twice in two years. Had more than $17,000 in body work on the first collision. After the second accident that really buckled the roof ($9,000.00 in repairs) they decided to trade it in on another Jag.
Last month I ran a Carfax just for the heck of it under their vin number. Everything came back saying the car wasn't involved in any accidents...I feel pretty bad for the poor fool that bought that car...
Save you money...
like people have said, carfax is a joke, it can be helpful if it DOES show something, but if it DOESNT show anything (which is often) don't accept it as 'good enough'.
